The director of The Exorcist made a horror adjacent film with the star of Jaws and a soundtrack by the musicians who scored Blade Runner and most of you probably haven't seen it.

For the uninitiated, Sorcerer is the 1977 film by William Friedkin about four criminals from different backgrounds who find themselves in an impoverished Colombian village working as day laborers while on the run from their pasts.

Desperate to improve their situations, they embark on a suicide mission to transport six crates of highly unstable nitroglycerin 200 miles through the jungle to an oil well where it's needed to extinguish an out of control fire.

What ensues is a brutal, white-knuckled spectacle that grinds its character's and viewer's nerves down to the proverbial nub. It's a story about the quest for redemption and how no one is guaranteed anything more than that. It's a slow burn that builds tension but also rewards its audience with several moments of anguished release. It's a bleak, relentless, existential ordeal and I think /r/horror digs that shit.

The trailer does a great job of conveying the heart of the film without giving away too much. https://youtu.be/3BDbIzovuos

What films based on books improved the book's ending? Two films come to my mind, Jaws, and The Mist. Spoilers ahead.

Jaws changed a character's fate and the way the shark dies. In the book, Hooper is eaten in the cage scene and the shark, as it swims toward Brody to attack him, simply dies due to the the harpoon wounds it has received.

In the film, Hooper lives and the shark is killed by Brody with a rifle, saying the classic line "Smile you son of a bitch!"

The Mist novella had David hear an encouraging word over a radio.

In the film, David and the other 3 adults agree to all be killed by David, his young son included. Unfortunately, David has only 4 bullets left for the 5 people and, in a heart-wrenching scene, David sobs inconsolably and screams for the monsters to come kill him after he has killed the other passengers. Minutes later what sounds like another monster in the mist is actually revealed to be military tanks, helicopters and convoy vehicles (holding survivors). What a devastating ending. I sat alone in the theater with my mouth open through the entire credits.

Thalassophobes who have braved a viewing of Jaws, what do you think of the film? (A brief review)

I watched it for the first time recently, purely because I was curious about it from a cinematic point of view. I actually wonder how I would have received the film if I was not afraid of the ocean, because I'm sure the fact that I am definitely enhanced my viewing, for better or worse.

Man, that was a tough watch. I'm really not sure if you're meant to be scared of the shark or just the ocean more when watching the film, but for me, it was the ocean I found more terrifying a lot of the time. To be sure, Quint's death was the stuff of nightmares and I couldn't watch it, but in a way I was prepared for it. The first sequence at night when Chrissy was killed and Hooper diving to check out Ben Gardner's destroyed boat were a lot more frightening to me than the moments of attack. Neither person was really suspecting anything would happen, and I'm sitting there in a panic because they're going into the ocean at night, knowing there was something down there but not being able to see it and just waiting, terrified, for if/when it would finally strike. Just the essence of thalassophobia. All of the underwater shots of the bodies flailing about in the water from the shark's point of view also had me literally squirming in my seat, especially when the camera was positioned right at the surface so you kept seeing in and out of the water with the waves. Shudders.

I actually did enjoy the film for the most part, but I don't know if I'd ever sit and watch it in full again. Maybe in bits and pieces to slowly desensitize myself to it. I'm sure for many people, Jaws was a movie that probably first triggered their present thalassophobia, but if that's the case for you, do you like the film despite your fear? What about those like me who knew they were already afraid of the ocean but watched it anyway?

Do you consider Jaws and other similar films to be monster movies?

Obviously at the end of the day it is all just semantics and doesn't really amount to much, but it was just a thought that crossed my mind as I was organizing my movies.

I came across the meg and consider that to be a monster flick, so I want to put it with my other monster movies but at the same time I would want to clump it with Jaws which I would not normally consider to be a monster film.

What say you? How would you organize it? Personally, I ended up clumping my killer animal flicks with my monster movies.

[TOMT] [actress] Help! Anyone remember either name or films or costars- woman, blond, wide jaw, blue eyes, bangs, bushy eye brows, probably in 40s

I cannot think of anything, and it’d driving me insane. Her name, what she’s in, literally anyone she’s acted with..?

It’s all blank. Just an image of her, with her short blond bob haircut, dramatic bangs, bushy dark eyebrows, small mouth, wide jaw. Blue eyes that seem super darkly lined.

Ughhhh. I’ve been trying to remember her for literally hours.

She has eyebrows like cara delevigne, but a super squared or even trapezoid jaw. And maybe even rounded cheeks.

And the image i have of her, she’s wearing a blazer. Btwβ€” NOT tea leoni, though for some reason i wondered for a second, if it was the madame secretary actress, and it’s not because that is tea leoni.

Please hallllppppp
