The new novel in the 'John Dies at the End' series is up for pre-order now! (from Youtube)
"You guys are nuts. The new JDatE book hit #131 in all books on Amazon yesterday, even though they're pre-orders for a fall release. Holy shit! Also #1 in 'Supernatural' fanfic:" (from Twitter, 1/19/22)
Hi folks! It's Alex popping in, saying hi.
I did one of these round-ups for the ATB and Jeff May episodes. Here's another one, rounding up all the Jason Pargin episodes (so far):
Note: those are links to the patron versions of the episodes. If you're not a patron yet, you can pick through the public feed to hear the main episodes. Bonus shows are patron only. Also patrons can use this tag for a list of all the shows and other posts involving Jason.
Back again for another AMA, I'm the author of the John Dies at the End series and the Zoey Ashe series, and was the executive editor at Cracked.com from 2007 until I fled the industry earlier this year. I have a new book out called Zoey Punches the Future in the Dick, here's a three-minute video that explains everything but may also leave you more confused than ever:

EDIT: Okay I answered 112 questions over five hours and it looks like the next hundred questions I see on here are all duplicates, so if you asked but didn't get an answer it probably means I answered it already. If you're showing up late, there's several thousand words worth of answers below. Thanks, everybody!
Jason is the first guest in a long time that could really have a conversation about the topic with Robert. Usually the guests can just express their horror at what they are hearing but Jason is almost more like a cohost than a guest.
I listen to basically anything Robert does but hope Jason comes back more often.
I will admit I liked Jasons version of the cracked podcast too and have always enjoyed his columns and writting.
#John dies at the end
John dies at the end

P.S.: Évitez le film, c'est une honte.
I'm a fan of the author. This book can be stand alone but makes skip able parts a thing if you read the first one.
I have zero idea what genre. I read many different ones and just enjoy reading for the sake of a good story!
I think it's a good story and really like this book. Do I think it's well written? Meh. It's alright written. It's a build up to the end and it moves kind of slow. He includes things happening "off stage" so that it gives you a small surprise now and again. It's most definitely in line with the first book.
If you enjoy drama, explosions, personal drama, and young adult angst you'll enjoy this book.
Hopefully I followed the rules and didn't provide spoilers!

I was thinking the other day that the Fallout 2 protagonist's dialogue reads a lot like Zoey Ashe, I know Jason Pargin is a big fan of video games going off of his twitter and how often video game tropes come up in his writing, I think it'd be neat to see a game based off of John Dies At The End or the Zoey Books
I love the Cracked podcasts that Jason Pargin (David Wong) is on the most, as well as his articles. He has a very refreshing and insightful perspective on things and has a unique way to tell things with multiple perspectives and is not judgemental. Now that he is no longer at Cracked does he do other podcasts or articles anywhere?
Thank you.
His Twitter yesterday announced that he is leaving Cracked as the EIC. In his farewell letter, he also gave a nod to Jack and linked TDZ.
I know on the Cracked podcast he once mentioned Jack as someone who ditched the company, and I'm kind of curious if he did it because of his own frustrations as someone who took over. I'm also curious if this means Jason might be a future guest as well, perhaps to plug his future book at the least.
Edit: it was clarified that they're still buddies and I am gloriously happy about it.
Moorhead and Benson made the best Lovecraftian existential horror film in 'The Endless' since Stuart Gordon's run of films in the 80's. David Wong (Jason Pargin) has written the phenomenal existential horror/comedy series starting with 'John dies at the end' (which was made into a feature film by Don Coscarelli from phantasm fame but sadly didn't effectively portray the right elements of the novel). Nothing seems more perfect to me than the aesthetic style/ pacing/direction/acting of Moorhead and Benson with the novels written by David Wong.
After going back over old cracked podcasts about poverty in America, I think Jason, who grew up in poor small town Illinois, and Sam could have a fascinating conversation about differences in viewpoint based on socioeconomic factors.

The segment starts around the 36 minute mark. They pretty accurately describe the appeal of my favourite friend simulator.
This theory is spawned from having just watched the movie version of John Dies in the End, and then looking at the Wikipedia page for David Wong, the author of the book. This guy has all the markings of the Author - quirky psychedelic weirdness, tongue-in-cheek humor, dream-like interweavings of narratives. Plus, he started his now very successful career writing a weird sci-fi serial online. Not to mention, his latest novel released last year called Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits has: "Nightmarish villains with superhuman enhancements An all-seeing social network that tracks our every move Mysterious Smooth-talking power players who lurk behind the scenes A young girl from the trailer park and Her very smelly cat" as the tagline for the book on the website.
it is a very good read. The only similar works I can recall is some of the inventive (over the top) horror stuff by Charles Stross.
Anyone out there read 'And John Dies at the End' and know similar works? I would like to read them.

I live in email all day, so I thought to share some free interesting, informative, and inspirational roleplaying newsletters. The action of the moment is on Substack, the latest venture-funded (US$65M!) platform in the tradition of Medium, Vook, Byliner, The Atavist, Pronoun, and other mayflies. Ambitious newsletter writers are always better off building their own platform, so check the many Substack alternatives and subscription management services that let you find and connect with your own audience.
That said, Substack has attracted lots of talent. You can't dismiss a site where Monte Cook posts about RPG Design Theories! Here are a few free Substack newsletters worth a look:

TEETH (Jim Rossignol and Marsh Davies)

The Glatisant (Ben Milton)

Though it's not about roleplaying, I recommend the funny and enlightening newsletter by Jason Pargin AKA "David Wong," novelist (John Dies at the End) and onetime editor at Cracked.com.
I frequent RPG.net's Tabletop Roleplaying Open and RPG Pub's Tabletop Gaming Discussion, where the admins have kindly stickied a Bundle of Holding thread. Right now my favorite gaming news site is Dicebreaker.
Video reviewers: I often praise Dave Thaumavore's detailed and well-produced RPG reviews. Seth Skorkowsky is wide-ranging and well-informed. Every Old School Revival gamer already knows Ben Milton's [Q

In his most recent substack Jason Pargin just casually dropped the title of book 4….. “If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe”

It seems sometimes there’s a relationship between the guest and subject, sometimes there’s not. Do you like it when the guest has some sort of relationship and knowledge with the subject for the episode? Or do you like it more when the guest knows nothing about the subject and gets blindsided by the horror?
I like it more when the guest knows little to nothing about the subject. The jokes seem better. Robert peppers in extra weird bits of history. He reveals little tidbits about his life why he’s the most suitable replacement for the Dos Equis most interesting man in the world.
The episodes where the guest knows a moderate about the subject I enjoy, but I get bored when the guest is the expert doing the most of the talking. It might be that the audio quality is poorer due to teleconferencing.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
