A list of puns related to "History of Sri Lanka"
Just for reading purposes..
With its long history comprising innumerable battles, political intrigues and romances, Sri Lanka has an abundance of context for some great historical epics. Most of which, with the right budget, direction (minus the cringeworthy singing and dancing) cast, can be made to rival the best of Hollywood; Kingdom of Heaven, Gladiator, Braveheart etc.
If you were producer and were presented with the resources to make one, which time period / episode would you choose?
(G) Sun over Colombo | The Easter Sunday Raid WW II | 1942 | Drama, War
(H) The King of Elephants| Regime of J.R. Jayawardena, Black July | 1983 | Crime, Drama
(I) No country for old men* | The escapades of octogenarians | 2000s | Comedy, Crime
Your ideas are welcome.
I was born in the UK but Iโm from Sri Lanka but I donโt know much about the history. Was Sri Lanka involved in the black slave trade? Was there slavery between darker skinned Sri Lankanโs with lighter skinned Sri Lankanโs ? Or was it simply just the Portuguese using black slaves to defeat the Sinhala kings (what I gathered on google) I was just thinking about how skin whitening is a very big thing in Sri Lanka and was just thinking where does this even root from? Iโm a bit darker than the average Sinhalese person, but Iโm constantly berated for that and I really do not get the view on it, or where itโs come from. Yesterday my mum was talking about how someone she knows is very pretty but their parents are very ugly and I asked why and she said because they are dark and I was genuinely shocked she even said that, but sheโs always made subtle remarks about darker skinned people in Sri Lanka, and when I explained to her itโs wrong to say that we did have a debate and she said even her ex husband would boast about how heโs lighter skinned. She said she understands now what she said was wrong but in Sri Lanka apparently you are taught that lighter is always more beautiful from a young age, hence her outdated thinking
That debate is what started me thinking about the history of slavery in Sri Lanka. Can anyone educate me on this?
And to all my darker skinned south-Asians, you are BEAUTIFUL!
Hi everyone! Been lurking in this community for a couple of weeks now, because my wife and I are likely moving to Sri Lanka from the US for my job next year. We should be living there for a few years at least and quite excited.
I've been watching YouTube videos and reading Wikipedia articles on the history of Sri Lanka, but I was wondering if anyone here has books (history, fiction, or otherwise) that they recommend as good starter points to better understand the country, cultures, and the peoples?
Also, any practical tips about what we might want to prepare, bring, not bring, for our life there would be welcome...not that we think we will be isolated or anything like that, I just try to minimize waste, redundant purchases, and online shopping as much as I can.
I'm an Australian born Sri Lankan and have been to Sri Lanka several times over the past few years. Only recently have I delved into the history of the nation, mainly the war and the incidents prior to the war. There is so much bloodshed, hatred and political incompetence throughout the history of our country and it's just completely shocking that things like this could ever have happened. There are faults from almost every side, the massacres and countless killings and the British rule to divide and conquer.
However, Sri Lanka is such a big part of who I am and we can never change the past, we can only work today to better our future. Whether you are Tamil or Sinhalese, Muslim, Hindu, Christian or Buddhist, just take pride in your nation and its peoples, we are one nation and there seems to be too much racial divide both in the past and the present of the nation, I really hope that the nation properly recovers and all ethnic groups reconcile and move forward together, what a beautiful country Sri Lanka is, there is no where else in the world like it and that's something to be proud of and to take care of.
Anyone interested in seeing a video about Sri Lanka AKA Ceylon/Serendib/Taprobane?
เฎตเฎฃเฎเฏเฎเฎฎเฏ! ๐๐ผ I've been reading and learning a lot about Ilankai about the last few years. Although I'm yet to come across a comprehensive guide on Tamil history in Sri Lanka that contains 'everything.' I've had a lot of recommendations to read this by Dr Gunansingam.
So if anyone has read this please feel free to share your thoughts. Or if there are any other books that are worthwhile reading on this topic, please also do share as well. เฎฎเฎฟเฎเฏเฎ เฎจเฎฉเฏเฎฑเฎฟ! :)
