I have plotted all surnames for the 1901 Census of Scotland. There were some 55,000 unique surnames in this census:

Let me know what you think!
A certain professor in EEE 128 decided to make a module that if you don't follow this one rule, your work is automatically zero.
The rule in question is having your filename be your surname, so with my username, it would be Silver.pdf right? Simple, right?
Apparently it's silver.pdf, in LOWERCASE.
I will take the L when it comes to formatting, I'm perfectly fine with that deduction, so be it. But the fact that that one error equates to my work being equal to someone who has not submitted anything at all, disregarding everything I've done in that part of the module feeling as if I have wasted my time, is a spit in my face and is an insult to the highest degree. I might as well not have learned or done the module at all. I'm not sure if im in the right or wrong in this one, but it's affecting me nonetheless.
The module in question has an inconsistency with the module's instructions and the answer sheet's instructions. It's as if he designed that module to trip up students specifically on that line. You would imagine that he'd give students a heads-up on an insta-zero rule.
He didn't even bother to make it a big deal, and say sa clarifications na 'Hey, this very important rule is on here". Even in the module itself, there isn't any bold, nakaunderline, nakared, or even capitalization in the instructions when he mentioned this rule. Nothing at all.
You could say that he made that rule in LOWERCASE.
He only made the post in UVLE regarding this apparently 'very important' rule after some people received their grades on the module.
Again, I'm not sure if I'm in the right or wrong here but the fact this whole situation happened is a complete joke and is another thing to add to my list of reasons that I've lost faith in the human race. I'd post pics of the module and it's answer sheet just to give some perspective but I'm not sure if that's allowed here.
for me it happened in my immediate βfamilyβ. family in parentheses because all they ever did was abuse me. i havenβt seen them as family since i was kicked out three years ago. went NC in January 21.
I donβt want to have the names they gave me. Iβve never liked my name and have always gone by nicknames, but lately iβve come to resent my surname. I hate it when people call me βMrs. Familynameβ, I do not want people to associate me with them. I also hate that they could very easily find me, which would be more difficult if i went by a different name.
Just posting to see if others have felt similar or maybe even tried changing their names?
I feel like Uru wasted a chance by not giving her characters surnames, I know you're thinking "what the hell are you talking about?" But let me explain.
In a world where abilities and power levels decide your social standing I think Uru should have reinforced the importance of surnames because of how abilities are inherited therefore making most if not all members of a certain family (Arlo, Sera and John's mom) be high/god tiers. I think that the power and influence of their families should've been more prominent in the story.
That could of been reinforced by addressing the surnames of the families. For example:
"The Shieldmans, most of their members are high ranking politicians in the Authorities"
" The Clockwork's, They have a monopoly on the tech industry"
"The Aurarios, the family has total control of the banks of the world"
Savant More Mule
Add to the list what you can think of! This just for fun coz thereβs anyway too much negative news around the world.
I find it strange that most Germans, who are normally very concerned about their privacy, will give their surname when answering the phone. I just say hello and have often been accused of being rude for not giving my name before the caller identifies themselves. In these days of identity thefts, spam calls etc. I find it quite unbelievable. Don't get me started on having to have your surname on your doorbell for everyone to see.
Hey! I was wondering what any of you guys know about the surname/family name βBoukantarβ. Maybe where it came from, what era, who adopted it etc.
All I know from speaking Arabic is that ΩΩΨ·Ψ§Ψ± are scales, but I donβt think father of the scales is what the name would actually mean.
I got married recently, and i haven't changed my surname - mostly because of the hassle it is, (or the hassle i assume it to be - i need to change it on all my ids and bank accounts, right? ) . My husband is okay with it, But my in laws have asked whether it would impact / halter/ cause issues later, wrt property, banking, etc - and I'd like to know if this is something that actually happens? If yes, is there anything that can be done that's easier than changing my surname?
Edit : thank you everyone for the upvotes and the answers! And thank goodness such a subreddit exists!
Like, I'm just genuinely fascinated by it, but I can see how it might be seen as ... like "so, what set of stereotypes should I ascribe to you?" or "but where are you from really?"
For example the Ingush surnames Merzhoev, Khamkhoev, Ozdoev, Evloev, are from clans Merzhoy, Khamxoy, Ozdoy and Ovloy. While Chechen surnames like Kadyrov, Ahmadov and Gelayev are derived from ancestors of the surname bearers. Any reason for this difference?
