If we dismiss climate change and don't try to improve our environmental impact, could there ever be another incident like the Great Smog of London?
I know the Great Smog was partly a result of the intense coal mining at the time, so I'm wondering if anything like that could happen again in the future if we decreased our efforts to take care of our climate (unregulated air pollution, dismissal of climate change factors, etc)

What precautions did the British take after the Great Smog of London in 1952?
In the light of recent terrible smog levels in Poland, comparable only with China I got curious and started reading a bit more on the Big Smoke. I've recently moved back home after 4 years in London and I am seriously shocked by how polluted the air here is and by how many people still use coal for heating purposes even though it's the 21st century. So my question is as follows - what happened after the Great Smog of London in 1952 that made the people keep the air so clean as it is now? Obviously it's not perfect but it's far better than in any Eastern European country I've been to and it's certainly better than in 1952.
