Hello all, I'm writing something on Jordanes and as you are probably aware the Latin tends to be a little opaque in its meaning. The translation I have for the following text in English is this:

'To him they devoted the first share of the spoil, and in his honor arms stripped from the foe were suspended from trees.  And they had more than all other races a deep spirit of religion, since the worship of this god seemed to be really bestowed upon their ancestor. '

The Latin is this:

'Huic prædæ primordia vovebant, huic truncis suspendebantur exuviæ, eratque illis religionis præter ceteros insinuatus affectus, quum parenti devotio numinis videretur impendi. '

Can anyone here discern whether when Jordanes says the Goths hang arms from trees he means to say literal human arms or the weapons of war?

I am not a Latinist but I am trying to understand the nuance in specific words. Your help with this is much appreciated!

I've been reading the Getica by Jordanes and I'm frequently encountered with the question of Jordanes' heritage. However, in the Getica he writes:

„nec me quis in favorem gentis praedictae, quasi ex ipsa trahenti originem, aliqua addidisee credit, quam quae legi et comperi.”

which I find translated as:

„Let no one believe that to the advantage of the race of which I have spoken—though indeed I trace my own descent from it—I have added aught besides what I have read or learned by inquiry.” (Mierow).

How can this not be seen as a definite statement of his origin?

He also writes:

„cuius Candacis Alanoviiamuthis patris mei genitor Paria, id est meus avus…”

Here he mentions his fathers lineage. Does this matter in the question of his origin?

As a follow-up, which I'd also love answered: What conclusions can we draw about the purpose of the Getica? Was it a bid to integrate Goths into the Roman Empire? Simply a reminder of Gothic heritage? Or did it have Roman political ambitions?

Having read Tacitus’ Germania and knowing that it was a great source of Germanic nationalism, and then having read Getica which shares many similarities with Tacitus’ work, how and was it used in a similar nationalistic manner?

I note this because many of the lands that Jordanes speaks about would be considered to be part of the Slavic world rather than a “gothic” world. I know that in Scandinavia there was a Gothic movement as well. Jordanes also speaks of the Huns and Atilla so it certainly can relate to a Hunnish nationalism as well, but there is not a whole surplus of information on that.

So the question is simple, was Jordanes’ Getica used similar to Tacitus’ Germania to promote a “Gothic” nationalism? And if so how was it used and where?

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
