A list of puns related to "Garbage theft"
Local forums are getting flooded with people announcing their bike was stolen. Every single time, it's because the person locked up with a cable lock. Half the time, these people don't have the serial number or even the make and model.
tldr: take a photo of your bike, write down the serial number, email both to yourself. Register it with any/all of the several registries. Use a U-lock through the back wheel between the seat&chain stays, secure the front wheel with a second small U-lock to the frame/another post or security skewer. Secure your seat with a security bolt, take your lights with you. Your "nobody would want to steal my bike" is exactly the kind of bike thieves want to steal because there is a big market for that sort of bike. Don't buy likely-stolen used bikes.
FIND YOUR SERIAL AND REGISTER YOUR BIKE
TODAY, find the serial number for your bike. It's usually on the underside by the crank, stamped into the frame - but can sometimes be in other places.
Now, take a picture of the serial number wherever it is on the bike. Take a DAYTIME picture of your bike, ideally against a plain background. Particularly anything you've changed or that seems unique. Save those photos in a separate folder on your phone if possible, AND email them to yourself along with the text of the serial number and such.
There are several bike registries, which you can and should use, TODAY, to register your bike - or report a bike that was stolen.
If your bike was stolen, it is very important that you report it to police as stolen. Police DO recover a lot of bikes and they DO check registries and theft reports. Reporting thefts also makes it easier to argue for greater police resources to fight bike theft, for police to track trends in locations/times/dates, and others to see where high theft areas are via public databases.
First, a rant about bike shops and cable locks
**Fuck every bike shop and hardware store in the area that sells cable locks with

The only thing I can think of is that people straight up don't know what they're talking about and only know of the free roam/lobby stuff. And even that stuff is really fun with friends.

Anyone have any luck with ideas to deter or prevent their roller garbage bins from being stolen?
We 'lose' one every few months. We had two new ones delivered just before xmas and they were literally stolen in under 24 hours. (6 unit building)
Thinking about disabling or removing the wheels perhaps. We don't need move them far for pickup. Might not be viable though.
So anyone else have any suggestions?
This sub reminds me of something that happened to a buddy of mine back in the day. It was his first full time job and he lived in a 1 room flat with a friend.
He was a good employee who showed up for work and did his job, no write ups. One day, he took 3 garbage bags home. He didn't think this was a big deal, didn't try to hide it. The assistant manager gives him a ride to the bus station and notices he has 3 garbage bags. The AM asks "your taking these from work"? Friend casually says yeah I have some old clothes that I'm getting rid of and cleaning up my apartment. AM says nothing.
The next day friend is terminated. The AM informed the manager that friend has taken 3 garbage bags from work. The manager even writes on his termination paper that friend is dismissed for "employee theft of 3 garbage bags"
The AM held his head down and wouldn't make eye contact with my friend. Didn't say anything or apologise.
Now I notice every McDonald's I see is hiring and in desperate need of workers. They would probably give away boxes of garbage bags as a signing bonus if they thought it would work. They've probably fucked a lot of employees over the years because it was no sweat off their ass. Times have changed. Fuck them.
EDIT: I am astounded by the amount of people that are defending the manager and saying they would have done the same. Some have even suggested he was lucky "charges weren't brought against him". For stealing 3 plastic bags.
An alarming amount of people also say the cost of the item doesn't matter because "stealing is stealing" whether it's a posted note, plastic bag, or merchandise. I really can't comprehend this attitude. How many people here would expect to be fired for grabbing a pencil? I could do that right infront of my boss and he wouldn't even question it.
Context:
One attraction of Biden (primarily discussed on reddit) was the potential cancellation of student debt. This was seen as an ideal by progressives and was heavily pushed by popular figures (mostly on social media) such as AOC and Bernie Sanders. Biden had also made similar discussions on the subject and at one point, had promised too cancel $10,000 of student debt. The expectation has been driven further by many activists discussing the idea and pressuring his administration. However, in a sudden twist, the White House is set to restart student loan payments in February.
This sudden change in both reality and rhetoric has led to some soul searching and heated discussions on the future of the current Democratic party. Progressives, many of whom strongly dislike so-called 'Neoliberals' are disgusted at this and see it as a betrayal. Many progressives are becoming increasingly frustrated with current Democrat policies, threatening to sit out the mid-terms and the election. As a result, infighting within the Democratic support base has been rekindled. In an environment of recent Progressive losses (Several mayoral campaigns across the country went to Republicans and Neoliberals, with few major progressive victories), the worst time to break apart would be now.
Nevertheless, Is it truly Biden's fault? Did he ever promise to cancel all these debts? Are the midterms finished? Who should shut their mouths, progressives of neoliberals? Is choosing not to vote principled or privileged? Should we vouch for accelerationism, revolution or protest? Is any criticism, legitimate or not, levied at the current administration Republican Obstructionism, and ultimately serving their interests? Are we a bunch of whiney babies for taking a loan and refusing to pay it back? Find out in possibly the most widely debated political subject since Bernie's second drop out.

... keep reading on reddit β‘We are laser focusing on McDonalds until they pay their workers a thriving wage.
McDonalds is a company that was built off of greed and theft by their βfounderβ Ray Croc. They continue on his legacy of greed and theft by how they treat their employees.
Donβt work or buy from McDonalds. Go eat at a local burger shop or something that helps keep money in your community.
βThe studies have found each $100 spent at local independents generated $45 of secondary local spending compared to $14 for a bug box chainβ (AMIBA). This show that going local is better because it contributes more to the economy. The money that you spend in your community a bigger portion is given back not like fast food restaurant who keep most of it money.β
Edit: Accounts that are less than a few months old keep commenting and saying βIβm going to eat at McDonaldβs now.β Good. Eat there everyday for every single meal. That will show me. Destroy your body with terrible and unhealthy food. You sure are showing me.
Yβall trolls pretend to care about small businesses, but in reality donβt care at all. You would literally eat garbage food and ruin your health just to seem like you are owning us. For every one of you there are many more of us. This is an issue conservatives and democrats both agree on. Helping family businesses. Go out and support a local business.
My building forced Fetch enrollment early last year. I don't use it at all because when the enrollment happened Fetch took my mail from the USPS office without telling me when it was addressed to the apartment not to the Fetch address. I drove to the Fetch office but they couldn't find my mail. I figured if I don't use the Fetch address and keep an eye out for USPS deliveries going missing, it'd be fine.
Next year residents will have to pay $15/mo for Fetch and management won't let anyone opt out whether you use it or not. Who wants to pay for 3+ day delivery when we signed up for 2 day delivery??
I was out this past week and family members sent packages to my doorstep because they don't know about Fetch - wasn't expecting them to send anything so we didn't coordinate - and all 4 packages were stolen. Found one of our opened packages in the garage.
When I moved in, leasing office would hold packages and we have a working non Amazon locker. With Fetch, office won't hold any packages and won't allow anyone to use the locker. I'm kicking myself for renewing here another year. Screw Fetch and screw these management companies for forcing everybody to sign up for this crap program. Fetch wins, management wins, thieves win, residents lose.
There was a post two weeks ago about Fetch. I now echo their suggestion, don't rent somewhere that forces Fetch.
The rising price of food is scary! a 2lb bag of beans now costs $3 instead of $1.50. Other essentials (for my cooking at least) like cauliflower, milk, butter, flour, etc are getting more expensive and I hate seeing my grocery bill when i check out!
You can save a lot of money by dumpster diving. A LOT of big box stores throw out tons of food that is past the expiration date but still perfectly delicious and safe. I have gotten lots of baked goods but also many veggies and even once a huge stack of meat (be careful to smell meat for spoilage)!
Not only does dumpster diving drop your grocery bill, but its great for the environment. Thats food that isn't going into landfills and releasing methane and other greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.
Take some time to do a bit of research on how to do it safely and which stores in your area have the best stuff. It feels like a treasure hunt!
