Selfhosted alternative to "SIMbox" - gsm modem for forwarding calls and text?

Since I am living abroad rn I bought Glocalme Simbox and left it at my parents' house in my home country. It is GSM/3G/LTE battery-free modem, where you put your sim card and which you plug into the home internet, so It can receive calls and SMS and forward all through the internet to their proprietary mobile apps. The product is targeted at frequent travelers or people living abroad. So far it works fine, but there were always things that bugs me.

First of all, obviously, they forward all calls and SMS through their servers, hence it is a big-big privacy concern. Second, while they sell devices and provides all services rn without any subscription, and forwarding phone calls and SMS is not a very demanding task, it is just a matter of time when they either shut down their services or introduce a subscription model. Because they will eventually run out of money from the initial device sale, but maintaining even idling servers require money. Just look at Slingbox shut down or how Teamviewer harasses lifetime license owners.

So I searched for solutions from time to time, but my google-fu failed me. I imagine that there should be some solution with a USB LTE modem plugged into a PC and some software will just forward everything coming to that USB modem to somewhere(ideally, to something like Telegram)... I am familiar with Docker, Proxmox, running VMs, Ubuntu, so I am open to any suggestions.

Regarding communication with a GSM modem

Right now I am interfacing an STMF4 board with a sim modem. Sending at commands through the uart for example to send a text message to myself as a text works, but the output itself is kind of weird..

Say for example I wanted to text myself (My number is 111 111 1111) and I want to tell myself 'Hello!", then naturally I send "AT+CMGS="11111111111"\r\nHello!" (theres also 0x1a in hex at the end of this to actually get out of typing mode and send the message).

My issue? The message sends, but instead of just receiving "Hello!" Ill receive the entire message I sent via UART to the mode, including the AT command part and formatting due to the new line and carriage return characters that come after it. This kind of led me to a few questions, because splitting the command part and the message itself with some time between them means this doesn't happen.

I'm thinking one of two things is happening: The first command gets sent and nothing happens (In terms of the message not sending), it reads the at command and the hello part gets eaten up/scrapped, then when I send the modem this command once again, me thinking my first message of "Hello!" had sent, in reality it was still waiting for a message body from the first text.

Looking through documentation I couldn't really find if such a delay existed but I have no other thoughts of how this could have happened. If anyone else has experience, is it essentially a hard requirement to split up at command from any arguments, such as that of the CMGS command for sms?

Please help! GSM modem, AT commands, and PuTTy

I'm a student working on a project that involves interacting with a GSM modem via AT commands. I've been having trouble connecting my computer to the modem.

What I know: The modem is on, the drivers are installed, a sim card is in one of the modem's ports, and I see the COM ports in the device manager.

However, when I try to use puTTy to enter with serial, it launches, but it never works. On one of the ports, it lets me type, but it never responds when I use the command "AT". On all the others, it simply won't let me type anything.

4G / LTE / GSM Modem Failover - Hardware

I'm looking to add a 4G/LTE/GSM modem to my network to provide a redundant WAN failover connection but I'm struggling to find suitable hardware.

Ideally I'm looking for a 4G modem with the following features/characteristics:

  1. Hard-wired ethernet output, >=1Gbps.
  2. Reliability: must be suitable to be running 24/7/365. I'm looking for an automatic redundant failover, not a temporary/emergency backup device someone has to set up manually each time it's needed.
  3. No specific network/carrier restrictions.

I've found plenty of routers and gateways which can do this, but I'd really like to continue to use my existing router and avoid an unnecessary router-behind-router/double NAT configuration.

So far I've found and provisionally ruled out the following:

  1. Teltonika LTE modems appear to only have mini-USB outputs and wouldn't be compatible with my router.
  2. NetGear LB2120 sounds ideal but appears to get absolutely slated for poor reliability in online reviews.
  3. Ubiquiti LTE not only appears to be restricted to a specific carrier but also a specific subscription plan – very disappointing from Ubiquiti. Also only seems to be available in the US.

Can anyone offer any suggestions/guidance, please?

Apologies if this isn't the best sub for this; if anyone knows any better places to ask this question I'd welcome suggestions for that too.

Thanks.

How would you integrate a GSM modem in a .net core application?

Hi!

I would like to be able to send/receive SMS via my web application. It's actually just an API which gets consumed by an Angular app.

Setting up the modem was straight forward but there are still some questions which confuse me at the moment.

  1. How do I ensure, that the SerialPort is open while the server is running?

    • I added my SMS Service as a Singleton in Startup.cs. Since my DbContext is added as Transient I can't inject it into the SMS Service. Tried searching on Google and SO but couldn't get this to work.
  2. Would it be a better idea to create a windows service with API and communicate with the actual web app?

    • Receive incoming SMS, read it, parse it, save it to DB, delete it and then send a notification to my web app which then notifies connected users (if there are) via SignalR - if nobody is connected it still is saved to the DB so the next time a user connects, he fetches the SMS from the DB.
    • To send SMS, create a endpoint which I call from my web app, also store the sent SMS in DB.

Maybe I'm overcomplicating this but any solution I can think of has its downside. So the question is. How would YOU do it?

Thanks for reading :)

- I have a GSM Modem attached to my Pi (Quectel BG96).

- The SIM card is active and gets registered in the network. (I'm able to see that from the carrier's platform)

- The Modem is detected by the Pi and I can talk to the modem through minicom.

- On the other hand, I have a python script that sends data to Azure, but this data gets sent only when connected to wifi.

- No data is being sent through the modem at all.

ESP32 + Sim800L - getting garbage characters on TX from gsm modem

Recently got TTGO Bluetooth&battery OLED board and attempted to connect it to SIM800L modem.

My setup is:

GSM tx <-> ESP32 14 pin
GSM rx <-> ESP32 12 pin

Serial2.begin(baudRate, SERIAL_8N1, 14, 12, false);

GSM is powered from Li-Ion battery so it should have sufficient power, it's stable.
I tried many different baud rates.

The problem is garbage characters received on serial when GSM module is performing any activity that involves GSM communication packets. So im getting those when: receiving call, making call, regisering to network, establishing tcp connection etc.

Example:

[GSM] => AT+CBC
[GSM]  <= +CBC: 0,91,4132
[GSM]  <= OK
[GSM] ---
[GSM] => AT+CPIN?
[GSM]  <= +CPIN: READY
[GSM]  <= OK
[GSM]  <= nWo{_osoV߿{~w߿woo~~7
[GSM]  <= RING
[GSM]  <= +CLIP: "+48XXXXXXXXX",145,"",0,"",0

Tried many baud rates and different pins, still same.

Any ideas what it might be? Tx line getting interference for GSM transmitter?

trying to send audio using a gsm modem in a voice call, stuck on serial port stuff

i've been trying to use this old 3g usb modem to make calls. right now i'm able to start the call and listen to what's sent through the phone's microphone in my computer, but i haven't been able to figure out how to send audio properly

so far i'm just able to send stuff from /dev/urandom to the phone by using some command like picocom /dev/ttyUSB1 < /dev/urandom. that produces noise on the phone. but anything else just fails. i'm almost certain audio has to be coded so it's signed 16-bit pcm 8000hz sample rate audio (whatever that means), and i think i'm doing this successfully by using rec -c 1 -t s16 -r 8000 -, but when piped to picocom this produces this choppy sound that's similar to whatever is being sent to rec but it's unintelligible. so know i'm suspecting it's something related to speed, somehow. like, if i make an 10 second audio and i redirect the file to picocom /dev/ttyUSB1, it sends it in like 2 seconds, and all i listen is this 2 second noise. so i don't know if i have to send the bytes slower or what's going on. i'm sure this is either some common sense serial port stuff or some common sense audio stuff. thanks

What is "OM" and "DM" in GSM Modems?

I am currently working on a project that involves automating sending and receiving text messages using a RAZR v3.

Usually, when choosing the memory for the phone, there is "ME", "SM",or "MT" which stands for phone, sim, and both respectively. However when inserting a specific sim card, its different. When I do a AT+CPMS=?, I get ("MT","IM","OM","BM","DM"), ("OM","DM"),("IM")

I know what MT is, and BM is for broadcast messages. What does "OM" and "DM" stand for and what are their relations to the other memory types?

I used this site for basic memory knowledge: http://www.developershome.com/sms/cpmsCommand.asp

and according to this site for motorola commands, it seems as if "OM" and "DM" are unknown as well(Do a ctrl+f with the keyword "CPMS"): http://gatling.ikk.sztaki.hu/~kissg/gsm/at+c.html#27.07me

I have already tried searching the internet but to no avail. If there is an article that illustrates in depth on what I am asking, I would appreciate it if you would please point me to that location, otherwise please help with the question!

Thank you!

Problem with interfacing a GSM modem with a microcontroller via RS 232, in order to send/receive SMS messages.

Problem: The PIC is programmed to check if the GSM modem has received an SMS, and use AT commands to send a reply. However, it seems as if there is something wrong with the way they're communicating, via RS 232 link.

The GSM modem works fine, because I've tested it using hyperterminal. My code works fine, because I've broken it down function by function and tested it using the hyperterminal again (mimicking exactly how the modem would receive a text).

Basically: GSM to PC = works fine ✓. PC to PIC = works fine ✓. GSM to PIC = err, no.

Kit: PIC = 16F819 (from microchip). GSM modem = wavecom multiband 900e 1800 gsm modem. Compiler = MPLAB (from microchip). Language = CCS C.

Advice so far:

  • It could be some kind of 'handshaking protocol/signal' that's needed, but I have no idea what that means for rs232 and how to implement it (I'm new to all this).

  • The modem is sending 'invisible' characters or numbers which my code isn't reading properly and causing to think there is no connection. At all. Dead. Like there's no one knocking at the door.

Code: I'm very confident my code works well. It's worked with the hyperterminal via rs232 and it's been checked over my professor. Although it might be a coding problem, I think it's unlikely.

[My Code - C language] (https://gist.github.com/anonymous/cca37fa60ac643ce109d)

the crucial part is:

void wait_for_sms (){
     fgets(str1,GSM);
     char str2[7] = "+CMTI:";

     if (strlen(str1)>strlen(str2)){
	     str1[strlen(str2)] = '\0';
     }

     int ret;
     ret = strcmp(str1, str2);

     if (ret==0)	 sms_in=1;
     else          sms_in=0;
}

The overall project is to control a coffee machine, initiating the process with a text from the user. Text the device before you get home and it makes you a coffee.

I have little experience so please explain things clearly.I appreciate any hints, ideas solutions. Thanks
