Why didnβt France collapse into civil war and anarchy after the capture of Francis I in 1525, at the battle of Pavia, in the same way it did after the capture of John II after his capture at Poitiers 150 years earlier?
Did the Royal Will decline in importance as states made the transition from Medieval to Early Modern Kingship?
Were there particular circumstances or individuals that meant the French Government held together, even in the absence of the King?

[DBWI] What if Francis II of France had died from that ear infection he had in 1560?
Then their children would never have been born and the eldest son would never have started the House of Valois-Stewart which held the crowns of both Scotland and France in personal union for centuries afterwards.
How would the Scottish colonies in North America fare? Would there still be conflict between England and Scotland over East Jersey and West Jersey? Would New Caledonia on the Isthmus of Panama have survived and become the major trading hub we know it today after building the Darien Canal with French money?

How did the people of France at the time react to Napoleon declaring himself emperor, his and Josephine's somewhat extravagance lifestyle and his marriage to the daughter of Francis II as a "royal" marriage?
It had been 15 years since the bloody revolution. France's last absolute monarch and his wife were executed in public and Ancien Regime was overthrown in 1793.
Even though Napoleon was a benevolent emperor who made Napoleonic Code, which is still used today, and who fought against a series of coalitions to defend revolutionary values, he still declared himself emperor in 1804, was crowned in Notre-Dame de Paris like old monarchs, established a dynasty by marrying the daughter of Francis II, lived in palaces with his former wife, Josephine etc.
What were the reaction of the people of France to such events?

Was France set to inherit Scotland, had Francis II survived and had children with Mary Queen of Scots?
Not like totally absorb it of course, but more along the lines of the later personal union that Scotland and England had during the period before the Acts of Union. All I know is that were was a treaty signed at Haddington, but I don't know if it included a thing like Mary I's Treaty with Spain disallowing a union.
Any info is appreciated, I'm super curious about this.

WI: Francis II of France lives to have a son with Mary Queen of Scots who then unites France and Scotland.
What affects would this have on English succession (since in OTL Mary's son became James IV of Scotland and James I of England)? Would Mary and Francis' son unite France, Scotland, and England?
Or if their son doesn't come to rule England how does history play out?

What if Francis II of France had not died at 16 and instead produced an heir with Mary, Queen Of Scots?
Mary, Queen of Scots was married to Francis II of France so their heir would have been ruler of both Scotland and France, but he died of an ear infection at 16 before an heir could be produced. This forced Mary to return to an unstable Scotland where we know all manner of unfortunate things befell her. It should also be noted that an agreement Mary signed provided that if Mary died without issue the French throne would inherit Scotland and her claim to the english throne.
So what if the King had lived?

What if Francis II of France gave mary Queen of Scots a son?
Before his death Francis impregnates Mary and she gives birth to a son, Henry III of France and I of Scotland.
How would this change events in France?
What would change in Scotland without Marys return?
Would Mary return to Scotland?
How would this change relations in europe now that Henry III was king of France, Scotland and had a claim to the English throne?
How would the birth of Henry III change events in the future?

Book about Philip II (the bold) of France
I'll currently doing a research project that's tangentially related to Richard the bold. And I'd like a bit of background. Many moons ago the author Jean Plaidy wrote dozens of novels about various historical royal figures. They were fictionalised in so far as they stuck to the known facts, but dramatised everything else. Much like Hilary Mantel's wolf hall.
Anyone know something similar that would give me a sense of the history and connections of Philip II (the bold) of France.
