Singer-songwriter Cartola is one of the most influential artists in Brazilian history. Not only he plays an important role in the development of Samba in Brazil, he was also a fantastic lyricist, and was crucial to establish the foundations of the Brazilian Carnival history.
Cartola was born in 1908 and learned to play the acoustic guitar with his father in his childhood. Cartola said himself that his father would be trying to teach him how to read while playing guitar, but he could only pay attention to the music. Living in a Brazilian favela most of his life, Cartola had to quit school aged 15 to work as masonβs helper (or a bricklayer assistant) to make ends meet. His mom died when he was 17. Shortly after, after disagreements with his father giving Cartolaβs bohemian lifestyle, was left to live alone in the favela of Mangueira. Cartola is actually a nickname that means βTop hatβ. The nickname is originated from the hat he used at work as a bricklayer to protect himself from injury.

Living by himself in the favela of Mangueira, Cartola then went deep into the Bohemian lifestyle. Both in written reports and in interviews in the biographic documentary βMΓΊsica para os Olhosβ, which translates to music for the eyes (but was released in English as βCartola, the Samba Legendβ), there are multiple reports of him leading a life filled with reunions with friends at pubs, with plenty of alcohol and love affairs (and STIs) while in Mangueira. He was said to be well versed with woman. This is his second wife talking about him:

I honestly found it very hard to watch, it's so sad to hear them cry constantly because they want to be freed from the cage.. I understand the idea, but he should have taken pictures of them and took those. You basically force wild animals to attend a wedding in a cage where they can't even move, and you can hear how unhappy they are. It's just not ok
