Playing on overseas servers has to be my favorite thing to do. Also the amount of english as a second language speakers is insane!

I play at really weird hours from work. But I have found playing on overseas servers to be hilarious. I have met some of the funniest people this way. I was in a tank crew with a Irishman and dutchman. Honestly the best banter back and forth I have had in a long time. Oh man I have had the best experiences playing with randoms. Had a Korean tank crew who spoke pretty good English. Tried to say things in Korean from google home translate and butchered it. Even accidently had my google home switch to Korean. And was stuck with Korean google for half the game.

And last I played on an aussie and german server. I gotta say play styles across countries is a thing. And pretty cool. The amount of times I was like screw it they wont understand my basic english. And suddenly they switch from German to english was amazing. Im here getting by just saying Garrison or tank. And some dudes realize oh he doesnt speak our language but is trying. And they just talk to me. Haha. Good on all you dudes. Yeah every community has bad people But overall I have had the best experiences.

Just wanted to share some cool experiences. Yall are awesome putting up with a loud American in your servers.

Scared to speak in English (as a second language)

Hey

I've been struggling with something ...

I'm trying to become a Youtuber. I know how to make videos, I have good ideas and I've created my Youtube channel for months now

but ...

The problem is that when it comes to speaking in English. I choke!

My listening is good and I understand English when native speakers speak... but something that holds me back from speaking myself is the Accent. I like to have American Accent. I've practiced a lot of pronunciations and stuff but I think I'm still not good enough...

I feel like I'm wasting my time now ... I don't know how to overcome this stupid fear and wanting everything to be perfect before starting my Youtube channel.

Even though I see so many people on youtube with bad accents and millions of views, I'm still stuck

Out-of-work professor, trying to set up a remote, virtual English as a Second Language classroom for several (or more) students at a time, who will PAY FEES in order to converse face-to-face, etc, as in the 'real classes' I used to have.

I'm new to reddit, and couldn't find anything on it that shares info on how to manage being a remote classroom teacher, who's not affiliated with an institution, and wants to collect money from the students in a systematic, non-intrusive manner. I believe that ESL students (and also myself) often prefer having a class, as opposed to a one-on-one tutoring situation. Of course, the economics of aggregating the fees make this potentially cheaper for each student, and more worthwhile for the teacher. But who out there is actually doing this, or something similar? Are there technological obstacles that prevent this from being feasible? Thank you.

I became uncle! How do I teach English to my Spanish niece (2 months old) as a second language?

TL,DR: Is it a good idea to talk to a baby in a language you are not native so it can learn it and possibly be fluent in it as she grows?

I became uncle 2 months ago and my brother (we are all spanish) asked me jokingly to talk to my niece only in english. Of course my English is not perfect but I use it everyday talking with others.

Would it be a good idea to talk to my niece only in English so she could learn this language?

Or could it be a bad idea since she would learn English with spanish accent?

How should I do this?

ESL OR ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE CLASS

I am curious to know how many people on here that were 1st gen born to immigrant/refugee parents or came at a really young age was ever placed in English As A Second Language class. I went to elementary school on both east and west coast and do not even remember that class. Wasn't until middle school and high school I saw it however I do not recall one Asian person in there ever. Majority was Hispanic, African, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, etc.

I can recall just being in regular classes which probably helped my English to develop and accelerate.

Did anyone here experience ESL class?

English as a second language vs. gender-neutral pronouns. (Perspective)

OK, so I've been wanting to share some insight and perspective on this.

Spanish is my first language but I've spoken English as long as I can remember. I was raised in a Latin American country but went to college in the US. While in college, I was introduced to gender-neutral pronouns when referring to non-binary or genderfluid folks and I was taken aback at how long it was taking me to get used to the idea. Fellow Spanish-speaking foreigners shared the same problem. (Interestingly, Spanish-speaking locals not so much).

Of course I don't mean getting used to it in a socio-political way. We Spanish-speaking foreigners understood it when a person identified as non-binary or genderfluid, but it was common for us to accidentally slip out a gendered pronoun before immediately apologizing. It happened way too often. And then it hit me.

Spanish, unlike English, utilizes gendered nouns and adjectives to match pronouns. For example, "he is small" translates to "Γ©l es pequeΓ±o" and "she is small" becomes "ella es pequeΓ±a." The word "small" can denote gender like the article (the) or pronoun can. In Spanish, even inanimate objects like pillows, doors, carrots, magic, and movies are described as "female." Things like couches, bridges, lipstick, theatres, and love are "male." We Spanish-speakers are hardwired by language to see the world in binary. (There's an interesting Ted Talk about it too, Lera Boroditsky.)

So when English introduces gender-neutral concepts, our Spanish-speaking brain works a bit harder to try and match any English noun with its Spanish counterpart, and therefore, a gender. When it comes to pronouns, our brain subconciously searches for context clues and will automatically choose either a masculine term or a femenine one. Again, this is not an excuse to excuse ourselves from respecting gender-neutrality, instead it's something we Spanish-speakers need to become aware of and overcome so that we too can respect everyone's identities.

It also explains why gender-neutrality in communication is (unfortunately) less accepted in Latin American countries. Unlike English, which already is (mostly) gender-neutral, we would have to create a whole new way of speaking, reading and writing that would end up revolutionizing the Spanish language entirely, creating whole new lists of pronouns, nouns, and adjectives.

For example, instead of using the vowel "a" to express femenine nouns or the letter "o" for masculine ones, people have introduced the lett

English as a Second Language

In Michaela’s Challenge Mania podcast, she mentions that part of why she was writing a list rather than just speaking was actually to make sure that Emy, who speaks English as a second language, could fully understand. Because even when you can speak a language, quickly understanding and responding can be more difficult. From what I’ve heard, Logan had the most difficulties with Emy and Emmanuel having trouble as well but not as much. Are there any other instances of this?

Also, to be clear here, kudos to each and every one of the non-native speakers. I only speak one language and know how impressive it is that many challengers this season speak 2+ languages. It has not hindered my viewing experience at all, I’m just wondering how, if it all, it made the game more difficult for these players. Have y’all heard any other stories?
