A list of puns related to "Empire of the Senseless"
The entire quote:
"Humanity's soul must be shaken to its very depths, frightened by unfathomable and seemingly senseless crimes. Crimes that benefit no one, whose only objective is to inspire fear and terror. Because the ultimate purpose of crime is to establish the endless empire of crime. A state of complete insecurity and anarchy, founded upon the tainted ideals of a world doomed to annihilation. When humanity, subjugated by the terror of crime, has been driven insane by fear and horror, and when chaos has become supreme law, then the time will have come for the empire of crime."
From The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, directed by Fritz Lang, 1933.
The book is Laguna Heat, which some of you may remember was made into an 80's movie. Here's the sentence:
>"He considered settling onto the stairway to sleep until daylight, and finishing what he had come to do in the clean light of morning."
OK, so what's wrong with that?
Here's the scenario: A cop has tracked a serial killer to a small tropical island. He sets up a trap for the killer and stays up until 3am waiting for him to show, but no luck.
The cop deduces that the killer may be staying in an abandoned, decaying hotel on the other side of the island, which is mostly jungle. So he treks through the jungle in the dark, following a path, getting scared by the local wildlife. He finds the hotel. It's falling apart, covered in moss and vines.
He sees a window, with flickering candlelight, and the silhouette of a man. This could be the killer.
So he enters cautiously, and quietly sneaks upstairs. Everything is old and rotting. He comes to a big hole. He jumps across, teeters for a second, making a little noise. His stomach drops. He's scared, his heart is beating fast.
Then... HE CONSIDERS SLEEPING ON THE STAIRS? IN THE CREEPY ABANDONED HOTEL WITH THE SERIAL KILLER, WHO KNOWS THIS COP IS AFTER HIM?
This makes no fucking sense. None. I'm trying to imagine how it might make sense, and I just can't.
After 3,000 miles, he's just a short walk away from this psycho. But he's in the middle of nowhere, it's terrifying and dark, he has no backup, nobody knows where he is. He's jacked up and scared. NOBODY is going think "maybe I should go to sleep now"... and if they do, they sure as shit don't decide to do it right in the stairway, with no alarm clock, no light. Where the guy who cuts off eyelids and burns people to death might come across them while they're passed out and helpless.
I got through 95% of the book thinking "wow, this is pretty good considering it's his first novel" but that one line has damn near ruined it, it's just so nonsensical.
It is an absolute tragedy to what happened to this student. It could of been any one of us.
Imagine you go to the library to study for an upcoming final, stress is an all time high, and this happens. It could drive some of us over the edge. I can only imagine the trauma this student is going through.
I think it would be great if we started a GoFundMe page to help this student replace his laptop as it seems from the videos online that his laptop got destroyed by the liquid.
If this gets enough support I would gladly work with the Mods to set this all up so its official and the money goes to the student.
Let me know what you all think!
Update: Thank you all for responding and offering to help this student. However, after u/delowry emailed the admin, they responded that the Office of Student Community Relations is "in touch with the students impacted with a view to provide funding for replacement of damaged items". Further, they suggested that we do not proceed with this gofundme page "for the sake of their privacy, this idea may not be the best thing to encourage". Which I am sure we can all accept and appreciate.
So it seems like York is taking care of these students. But, a big thank you to all that supported this idea. It's great to see this community come together to help our fellow students in their times of need!
And a big shout out to u/delowry for taking the initiative of contacting the appropriate admin.
Best of luck on all of your end of semester work!
"It will all be over in a second or two", I thought, as I continued to spin in the void, around the Sun; the Moon, in turn, dancing around me.
This is something that is bugging me about the way the Finals are covered on TV. I'm an NBA fan, and watching the games is not enough for me. I love listening to NBA podcasts that discuss in length and detail the tactics, adjustements and what a team did right or wrong.
That proved to be not enough, so I turned to TV to expand my obesession with the game, especially this time of the year, only to be struck by how radical these shows are covering these games. Instead of discussing what a team did right or wrong and how the opposing team can adjust to it, I spent an hour watching a show where the contributors are battling to prove what opinion is the correct one, on subjects that left me speechless.
I'm not going to name the shows, because I noticed that this is an epidemic across all networks. For example, some of the "subjects" discussed today were:
These questions are cute, and belong in August.
For a sports platform, that suggests providing high quality sports content, to construct shows where those involved are shouting at each other and deal in these hypotheticals instead of discussing the actual games is beyond me, and it's really unfortunate.
This is one of the reasons why I appreciate the sub, because it provides me with the jokes, and the serious talk.
