YSK to never search for a domain name you want to purchase using a Domain Registrar

Why YSK: Domain Registrars such as GoDaddy.com have been known to be shady and purchase websites people search for shortly after they search for them.

To purchase a website bought by a Domain Registrar you will need to go to a bidding war with them. Bidding typically starts at $199 and to submit an offer you typically need to use an agent to do the bidding on your behalf, starting at $19.99 per bid and the agent also requires 20% of the purchase amount as commission.

Solution
Using a neutral domain registration lookup tool like https://whois.icann.org/en, you can safely verify if the domain exists, who if anyone has purchased it and when. Then if you decide to purchase it, do it in one lookup on the same day.

Edit: removed namecheap.com as they are legit. Issue seems to be with godaddy.com.

Best .SG domain name registrar?

Am using Vooju at the moment to host my .sg sites. Changing the DNS settings take hours to propagate (think 24h?) whereas I've used GoDaddy and AWS Route 53 and the DNS settings is instantaneous. Wondering if anyone has a domain name registrar to recommend? Thanks in advance.

Can a registrar arbitrarily increase the price of domain name when renewing?

say I bought some domain randomname.co.uk for an year for $100.

After an year, my business becomes hugely successful. The registrar, realising that I absolutely need to renew, sets the new price at $100k for the next year. Can they just do that?

I am asking my developer to give me access to the domain name registrar (Godaddy) of my business website. He says he can't give access because he has several domains registered under his account.
  • How can I get access to my domain? Can't he add me to manage only my domain?

  • Can I ask him for domain transfer?

Edit:Thank you all for all the help people.

I mentioned Godaddy for reference. I don't know the actual domain name registrar of our website yet. I wanted to have some understanding before I communicate with the developer. He is kind of refusing to reveal details. So, I am doing my own research before I talk to him.

Which domain name registrar was recommended by MB?

I forgot which podcast episode discussed this and don't recall seeing it in the book, but if you were to buy and create a new website (for either personal or business) with a privacy/security focus, what was the recommended service for this?

I vaguely remember something about Namecheap originally being recommended but then there was some issue with it, but correct me if I'm wrong. Appreciate your comments, thank you!

How to recover domain name of a business when it is in a registrar's account of the web dev - and the dev dies?

The subject basically says it all. I am a web hosting provider and one of my clients was a web dev who registered and maintained everything concerning the domains himself. Poor form, I know.

Now I have several of his clients stuck and looking to me for assistance. How can these companies and individuals proceed to get access to the domains (from GoDaddy, ENOM & Porkbun)? The eventual end goal of course is to get them into their own registrar account.

We have access to the admin/registrant contact email address (presumably) if that helps. The registrar accounts are registered in a different email address that we do not have access to though.

UDRP??? Something else?

Sadly, this is outside of my knowledge level. Can anyone offer any advice please?

What is the best (private) domain name registrar?

Hi!

I'm currently looking into getting a domain name. I'm a developer so I am looking into a .dev domain. Is there a preferred option or should I just go buy from a mainstream registrar and add whois protection?

I know .dev is pretty new, so I understand that there might not be so many options. I just wanted to ask here so that I can make a more informed decision.

Thanks in advance!

Name server at domain registrar or web hosting provider?

Hi there,

In general, do you prefer using the name servers of your domain registrar or those of your web hosting provider – and for what reasons?

Right now, my domain and my website are located at the same provider and while I am overall very happy with them, I find account security a little lacking and plan to separate domain and web hosting in the future.

From a security standpoint, I feel like not much is gained when I transfer the domain to a registrar with proper two-factor authentication, but point the domain to my less secure hosting provider's name servers. If my hosting account gets hacked, attackers could just alter the DNS records and point the site to a malicious site. Or am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance!

Domain Name Registrar

I've been doing a lot of research and it has led me to believe that it's good practice to host your domain name on a separate host to your site. Through my research I have also heard that the only factor that counts is price.

With that said I have narrowed it down to Google, Namecheap and Namesilo as all 3 seem to be well regarded, but now I can't decide which to go for.

Is it true that it really doesn't matter and I should just go with the cheapest? Or is there more for me to consider? Any recommendations?

Also, sorry for my bad English, it's not my first language.

Thanks!

Did the domain registrar "steal" my dot.org domain name?

I visited a domain register and noticed a solid name (a common first name in Holland) was available.

The next day the domain was registered. This seems very odd.

I wanted to claim the domain but it looks like the registrar TransIP took it himself.

Does this happen a lot?

(See the below screenshot of the Chrome history log, I visited TransIP the 25th, they registered the name the 26th and I found out about it the 27th)

Advice on choosing Domain name Registrar

I have the GitHub Student Developer Pack and through that I get a free domain for a year from 3 different registrars:

  1. name.com: One free Domain name and free Advanced Security(SSL etc)
  2. Namecheap: 1 year domain name registration on the .me TLD and Details 1 year SSL certificate.
  3. .TECH domain: One standard .TECH domain free for 1 year and 2 free email accounts with 100 MB free storage.

I need some advice on which one to go with. I need the domain for my personal website. If any of you have used name.com, .tech domain or namecheap what has been your experience? Would I face any problems when I renew them next year? Which one of these would you recommend I go with?
