A list of puns related to "Dissent Channel"
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, noting that America was born out of dissension, famously said:
> May we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion.
It was in this spirit that, in 1971, Secretary of State William Rogers established a βdissent channelβ for U.S. diplomats to raise their policy concerns without fear of penalty, reprisal or recrimination. By providing a safe space for dissenters, the departmentβs leaders assure that employees can raise issues of conscience and that policymakers benefit from a range of views.
Much like America, the mormon church was born out of dissension. Indeed, early church history - much like early American history - seems to paint a culture of honest dissenters. Many feel that this culture has gradually evolved into one that now suppresses dissension.
Elder Dieter F Uchtdorf, in a recent church conference, repeated his own version of the admonition once expressed by President Eisenhower; that we must never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion...
> One might ask, βIf the gospel is so wonderful, why would anyone leave?β
> Sometimes we assume it is because they have been offended or lazy or sinful. Actually, it is not that simple.
> In this Church that honors personal agency so strongly, that was restored by a young man who asked questions and sought answers, we respect those who honestly search for truth. It may break our hearts when their journey takes them away from the Church we love and the truth we have found, but we honor their right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own conscience, just as we claim that privilege for ourselves.
So, now I ask... does the mormon church have a "dissent channel"?
Is there a safe space for mormon dissenters to "raise their concerns without fear of penalty, reprisal or recrimination"?
Should there be?
