On 30.06.2014, Lars Mittank flew with three friends and two school friends to Varna - a port city in Bulgaria, which is located on the Black Sea and borders the health resort Goldstrand to the north.

But for some years now the golden beach is less known as a health resort, but rather as the "New Ballermann on the Balkans", which is why it is often the destination of so-called "men's vacations".

This was also the case with Lars, but this was his first vacation of this kind, normally he made and booked sport, fishing, and diving vacations, but because his friends had already booked the vacation and still had a place available, because the friend who actually wanted to come along didn't get a vacation, Lars decided to take part, because he was on vacation.

Sandra Mittank also wrote the following in her email to me: "I as a mother was very surprised about this kind of vacation because Lars didn't tell me about it."

Lars worked in Wilhelmshafen in a coal-fired power plant ever since he completed his advanced training as a power plant operator.

Wilhelmshafen is about 150 kilometers from his home town Marne, where his family still lives. He loved his job and loved his soccer club Werder Bremen since childhood, which will later be a factor in his life.

Because his father suffered a stroke in 2012, which made him dependent on support, Lars always commuted home when he had time off to be there for his parents and to relieve them of work. He also enjoyed seeing his friends and former soccer mates.

A vacation came just in time - a chance to leave the stress behind for at least a while and recharge his batteries.

So the 6 flew to Varna on June 30th, 2014, and stayed at 4-star all-inclusive hotel Viva.

During the time of the vacations was the soccer world cup and the temperatures were around 40 degrees at noon.

Unlike the others, who spent their time in the hotel room, at the pool, eating and partying in the evening, Lars played soccer on the beach with high school graduates - they later described him as a nice and sociable guy.

Nothing unusual or worth mentioning happened in the beginning, the only thing that the friends noticed was that Lars wasn't eating much.

Many documentaries and amateur detectives pay a lot of attention to this detail and try to derive their theories from this fact - but you have to remember that it was 40 degrees. Temperatures at which one often simply has no appetite.

I’ve just watched Mr Ballen’s video about the strange disappearance of this German young man that vanished the very last day of his trip with friends in Bulgaria.

I wanted to share my theory my theory, and why I think that this is what happened to him. Let me know what you think, if I’ve missed an important detail or if in your opinion, my theory is incorrect, and why.

I don’t understand why no one thought of this, since it’s something that’s well known and well documented in psychiatric medecine. I think Lars suffered from an acute drug induced psychosis. It typically happens around the age Lars was.

From the video, it doesn’t seem like drug use was questioned? Drug use before and during their trip. And even if the history of drug use was negative, alcohol can also trigger this.

These young men were on vacation in Bulgaria and partying for a week, so it is very possible they took (knowingly or maybe even unknowingly) some drugs at one point there (doesn’t need to be hard drugs to induce psychosis.. many happen with cannabis only). I’ve personally seen (and treated, as an ER psych nurse) a few drug induced acute psychosis in young men around 18/22 years old that were very intense; intense paranoia, very intense hallucinations, complexe ideas of persecution (thinking they were been followed by « bad people » that were going after them to kill them), etc.

That night at the bar, the psychosis was probably already setting in when he got into a heated altercation with some locals (no one said if this was out of character for him? But considering the kind of guy he generally seems to be -listens to his mom, loved the outdoor, chilling with his good friends in another country having fun, etc- he doesn’t sound like the type of guy who would easily get into fights or intense altercations with strangers, let alone in another country, and for only trigger a sport game... would his friends be comfortable traveling with him to another country if he had been known to easily or frequently get in trouble? I don’t think so..).

After that, at the McDonald, he doesn’t want anything to eat?! I mean.. he’s been out drinking all evening/night, who would pass on a Big Mac after that? And he preferred to stay outside, by himself, at night, in a foreign country than staying with his friends and go in? He co

I just came across this case recently. This is a long writeup, but I think this will be a fascinating case for those of you curious about disappearances/deaths with mysterious circumstances.

Marja Nijholt, 48, lived with her boyfriend in Enschede, Netherlands. People described her as “cheerful,” “sweet,” and “intelligent.” On occasion, Marja suffered from periods of confusion and anxiety attacks. Members of the Ecumenical City Pastorate church in Enschede, which she attended, reported she had been “struggling with numerous questions of life in recent months.”

Marja took her bike and her suitcase and rode a train from Enschede across the border to the nearby town of Gronau, Germany. She spent the nights of December 29 and December 30 at the Gasthof Fritz on Enschederstrasse. When questioned later, the hotel manager reported Marja was visibly anxious and told people she was being chased. On the morning of December 31, New Year’s Eve, the manager told Marja that a Dutch man had called the hotel and asked about her. Marja panicked and hurried out of the hotel. Police have not been able to identify the caller nor determine whether the call had anything to do with her death.

Around 11 am on December 31, Marja is caught on surveillance cameras at the Enschede train station back in the Netherlands. The train ride in between Gronau and Enschede is only 11 minutes, so apparently she fled the hotel in Gronau and returned to her own city. However, there is no evidence that she returned home; at the train station in Enschede she bought a one-way ticket to the town of Oss in the Netherlands.

Marja arrived in Oss around 2 pm, which makes sense as the train ride is not direct and would have taken approximately 2 h 10 min to 2 h 50 min depending on the route/transfers she chose. Her reasons for going to Oss are unclear. One article reported that she was looking for a “high-ranking Pentecostal official” there. Another article cited the pastor from City Pastorate in Enschede, who said she visited Oss for a New Year’s prayer service. Yet another article stated that the police said she was possibly meeting with an “internet date.”

In Oss, she visited several cafes, including Café ’t Libre in the Molenstraat around 4 pm. She approached several people asking about a place to spend the night at the cafes and on the street. She told others she was afraid she was being followed. She was also observed trying to call someone several times. At 8:30 pm she parked her bike outs

In 2014, a young German man walked into an airport in Bulgaria with a flight booked, then suddenly ran out leaving all his posessions behind, never to be heard from again. This is the story of Lars Mittank.

Hello all. I wanted to give some possible theories on the disappearance of the German Lars Mittank in Varna, Bulgaria.

The story has many details and important points, I unfortunatly don't have the time to add them all here so I will give a brief summary of the case for those new to the story and I'll include a Wikipedia link for further reading.

Summary:

28 year old Lars Mittank from Itzehoe, Germany was on holiday in Golden Sands, Bulgaria with 5 of his friends in July 2014. He was schedueled to leave on the 7th of July but due to a ruptured eardrum he sustained in a bar fight against a group of other Germans over their favourite football teams (Mittank was a big fan of Werder Bremen, the group of Germans were fans of Bayern Munich) he couldn't fly that day incase it aggrivated the injury. This was incredibley out of character for Lars according to his friends, usually being passive and reserved. He was to wait until the following day and travel alone, his friends leaving on the 7th. He was prescribed Cefuroxime 500 - an antibiotic routinely prescribed for ear infections, and told to see the airport doctor before flying on the 8th. He found a place to stay for the night that was cheap and near to the airport, however it wouldn't be a peaceful evening. He called his mother from the hotel, whispering and telling her to cancel his bank cards and he said he was being followed. He continued to act strange and paranoid, later texting his mother asking about the medication he was given. He was observed on security camera footage looking out the window and hiding in the elevator. He left the hotel at 1 a.m for an hour, where he went is unknown. He called his mother at dawn and said the people who were following him were close and he then flagged down a taxi and made his way to the airport. Once at the airport he was checked by the airport doctor and he cleared him to fly but noticed he was acting nervous and erratic. A construction worker entered the waiting room and Mittank said "I don't want to die here, I have to get out of here" and jumped up running out of the waiting room leaving his luggage there. The only thing he had with him were the clothes he was wearing. He ran straight out of the airport, scaled an 8 foot fence with barbed wire at the top and ran into the forest behind it. That was the last known sighting of Lars Mittank. It was later stated that he never filled the prescription to pick up the medication.

My question is around the direction Lars ran which is clearly shown on the CCTV footage from the cameras at Varna Airport.

I have heard many theories that he probably died in the woods after jumping the barbed wire fence and running across a meadow. I have had a look on google maps and I can’t see any woods close to that direction and in fact there seems to be a major road he’d need to cross to get anywhere if he carried running that way. I’m not the best with maps etc and I’d love your guys opinion of where he could of ended up.

Personally if I was Lars parents I would be concentrating on searching not far from where he was last seen.

Now this missing person case is one that has intrigued me for a few months as it is a fairly new case to me. There have been a few posts on this sub about this but I decided to post my views and perspectives on what I believe could have happened.

Lars Mittank is a German who disappeared on the 8th of July 2014 near Varna Airport in Varna, Bulgaria. Mittank was on vacation in a beach resort town names Golden Sands with a group of his friends.

Two days before his disappearance, Mittank got into an argument with four other men over a disagreement about football. Mittank, being a fan of German football team Werder Bremen was in an argument with four Bayern Munich fans. The argument resulted in Mittank having a ruptured ear drum. After, a doctor advised Lars not to fly and prescribed 500mg of an antibiotic known as Cefuroxime before admitting him to a hospital. Lars’ friends wanted to stay with him but he insisted they fly home without him.

Mittank stayed in Bulgaria without his friends and checked into a cheap hotel. A day after his friends left, Mittank was reported to have odd behaviour which was also captioned on the hotels CCTV cameras. He spent only one night in the hotel but was paranoid and nervous. He texted his mother stating that he was not safe and told her to cancel his credit card and that he was hiding from four men who were supposedly following him and asked him where some pills were.

Mittank was last seen in Varna airport. He was captured by airport security cameras running away. Once outside the airport he was seen climbing a fence, running into a meadow and into the woods. He has not been seen since

Now that you’ve heard the story, it’s time to hear my views on what I think of the case. There’s a lot of points in the case that link together. For example, Lars told his mother that he was hiding from four men who were following him. Lars also got into an argument with four men the day before. Maybe it’s them, maybe it’s not.

Here are a few theories on what I think could have happened:

•Lars possibly was followed by the four men he had an argument with. (Very plausible considering the links in the case)

•Lars overdosed on his Cefuroxime pills and hallucinated

•Lars ran into the woods being paranoid and was eventually killed by a wild animal (Very, very, very little chance considering that animals that will kill a man are rare in Varna)

I did a bit of research on Cefuroxime. The recommended amount for ages 18+ are 250mg every 12 hours

Most people attribute Lars behavior and disappearance to a ruptured ear canal he suffered on the trip and many think he had a traumatic brain injury. He was also prescribed anti biotics by a doctor for the rupture and it is speculated he may have experienced some type of side effect that caused him to fall into a paranoid state. I don't buy either of these theories and believe it is far more likely he was a drug mule, except it has been stated though not confirmed his suitcase was searched after his disappearance and no drugs were found, which would put a significant dent in this theory.

Instead of Lars himself running the drugs, I believe it is far more likely his friends who flew back without him were the ones who had ran drugs back to Germany, and he stayed behind as some sort of insurance. I believe this theory for a few reasons, the primary one being that he ran out of the airport after an airport official/security official interrupted his medical examination by the airport doctor to speak with the doctor about an unrelated manner. Lars may have thought his friends had gotten caught and he was about too be arrested, hence why he ran out of the airport without his luggage or cellphone and hopped a fence.

I also find his friends explanation that he experienced a ruptured ear canal after a bar fight and he was acting strange to be implausible, because why would they leave 'a friend' alone in a foreign country who they believed was acting strange. and claimed had disappeared for an entire night during the trip. It just doesn't pass the common sense test. This story of him 'acting bizzare' due to a ruptured ear canal and then seeing a doctor who they claim said he might have to stay in the country for 30 days is too far fetched. As others have pointed out, there is very minor surgery by an ENT that could have been performed pretty easily and allowed him to fly back immediately. In July 2014, there was a case about a 28 year old man from Berlin, Germany, Lars Mittank, who visited Bulgaria with his friends. This place in Bulgaria is very famous for young people from Germany and England, same as Mallorca or Ibiza.

Mittank got involved into a fight and hurt his ear. Something that happens always at those places where many young people are partying. It was over soccer teams. Lars allegedly got into another fight with tourists and disappeared from his friends' sight for a while, but came back.

He stayed there and enjoyed the rest of his holidays withhis friends. When they had to leave though, the doctor said he can not use the airplane because of he had ruptured his eardrum. He decided to stay in Bulgaria and rented a room in a hotel while his friends left. He had assured his friends he would be fine.

From the doctor, Lars bought an antibiotic called Cefuroxim 500 which doesn't have a lot of side effects unless used with alcohol and drugs (which sounds pretty standard).

At night time, however, Lars texted his mother panicking, saying he did not feel safe, despite what he told his friends. He felt restless. He told his mother she should cancel his credit card. He said he was hiding and four men were following him, then asked what Cefruoxim 500 (the pills) were.

Mittank wanted to leave again and catch his next flight. He went to the doctors office though, with all his stuff, suitcase etc. After that, he runs out from the doctors office.

A trucker has come forward saying a man matching Lars' description hitchhiked with him, but it is not confirmed.

Lars' family says he has no history of mental illness. No one knows what happened or where he is. His family is still searching for him and run a Facebook page in an effort to locate him.

Lars Mittank is a 28-year old German tourist who was spending a few days with friends in the Golden Sands seaside resort town in Bulgaria in July 2014. According to newspaper reports, a few days before they were supposed to leave, Lars, a Werder Bremen football supporter, got into a fight with Bavaria Munich supporters. When it came time to leave, he decided to have his ear checked out by a doctor and realized that the ear drum was ruptured, so the doctor gave him antibiotics and told him not to fly for a couple of days. His friends having left without him, Lars returned to the hotel and showed increasingly paranoid behaviors, constantly calling his mother at home and telling her that the hotel was "not right" and that he felt he was being followed. In the middle of the night before his new flight was supposed to leave Lars decided to flee from the hotel and walk to the airport, but then ended up accepting a ride to the airport on the way. CCTV footage shows him in the morning walking calmly into the airport. He can also be seen entering the airport's doctor's office, but then suddenly running out without his luggage or passport around 40 minutes later. The airport doctor said that when he ran out, an airport official dressed in a uniform had just walked in, but that he was not there to look for Mittank. CCTV footage shows him outside the airport running in a zig-zag line and then disappearing. He has not been heard from since.

This case always leaves me feeling really creeped-out when I think about it. From what I could gather through newspaper and TV interviews, there is a possibility that the antibiotics that he was given for the ruptured ear drum caused hallucinations as a side-effect, and this antibiotic is actually not allowed in Germany for that reason. I've also heard speculation that he received a head injury during the fight that was not diagnosed, and that this could cause these behavioral patterns. He was apparently very close with his family and had no apparent reason to run away.

Mittank stood up from his chair and shouted, "I don't want to die here. I have to get out of here." He then dropped all of his personal belongings to the floor, including his cell phone and wallet, and began running.

After leaving the bar, Mittank disappeared, with his friends unable to locate him for the rest of the night. Ah Bulgaria… During the summer, the peak season, it attracts revelers from neighboring European countries. In fact, I spent a week there in Sunny Beach, but at the beginning of September it was dead calm in terms of the festivities. I was, as often, a train late. I was very bored and it must be said that in terms of culture, we quickly go around.

On June 30, 2014 Lars Mittank, 28, and his 4 friends fly to Varna airport in eastern Bulgaria. They go to Golden Sands to drop off their luggage in one of the resorts on the Black Sea coast: the Viva Club hotel, for a week, all inclusive (meals, unlimited drinks).

As you can imagine, on the program: music, parties, girls, the pool, the beach and so on. Anyone who has heard of Cyprus, Croatia, and their neighboring countries know what I'm talking about. These are mini Ibiza at low cost to make it short.

A FIGHT PREVENTS HIM FROM TAKING HIS RETURN FLIGHT

On July 6, days before returning to Germany, Lars Mittank was injured following an altercation with another guy. Why ? You'll see, this is ridiculous, a real man's thing. Personally, I would blame it on alcohol, but I have no evidence to back it up. A fan of the Werder-Bremen football club, he took the lead with a supporter of the Bayern-Munich club.

Results? Lars Mittank takes a hit to the head. I also read that this clash eventually took place at a bar, the ROCK BAR by the beach, before he and his group of friends went to McDonald's for a bite to eat. While his friends were ordering at the fast food restaurant, he wished he had stayed outside in front of the sign because he was not hungry.

When the 4 friends leave McDonald's, Lars is no longer there. They think he has returned to the hotel, a 20-minute walk away. Except he's not in his room ... He reappears the next day, when everyone was supposed to catch the flight back to Germany.

He then said that 4 Russian and / or Bulgarian men allegedly hit him last night and that they were hired by Bayern supporters for it. Ladle but let's move on! No matter where (not far from McDO? On the beach?) He had a bitch, Lars Mittank is in bad shape. Oh and I forgot, no witnesses to this fight.

Since his ear and jaw hurt, he goes to see a doctor. He was then diagnosed with a perforated eardrum, first by a general practitioner, then by an ENT specialist at a hospital who told him he needed an operation. Lars refuses. She was therefore prescribed an antibiotic to prevent an ear infec
