Iβll remove it if the mods think this doesnβt warrant an entire post by itself. I would like to preface the obvious by saying that this is entirely my subjective opinion and shouldnβt boulder your enjoyment of the film. Also, spoilers.
I have rearly ever seen a film wrapped in two minds about itβs own central themes and the ways it wants to present and develop those ideas. On one spectrum, a lazy and misogynistic Luv Ranjan esque comedy about a middle aged manβs quest of reigniting his youth. I understand people are tired about hearing how derogatory his films are, how sleazy his ideas of women, how his incel tears have filled countless oceans. But itβs true and with this truth comes the second point, the complete anti thesis of the entire zeitgeist Ranjan preaches. This film wants you to believe how progressive it is. It tries to tackle ideas considered taboo in traditional and orthodox Indian society, live-in relationships, divorce, an estranged father-daughter relationship, dating someone the age of your daughter. Despite all that, there is no sincerity to it. Itβs poking it in your face with a big insulting stick saying βlook how radical and open minded I am, are you seeing? ensue claps from the audience.β You can have a fun and entertaining rom-com and still treat the serious moments maturely. Thatβs is how the audience invests in your story. In this film, someone says something of value that refine their character, but the shots donβt linger. It is as if the director thinks that the audience is not capable enough to handle it.
Itβs tonally inconsistent in the wildest ways, it wants to be a Little Miss Sunshine type comedy drama, and then a Pyar ka Punchnama type sleazebag comedy, both at the same time. The result is a bloated mess bogged down by its own runtime. You could remove an hour of this film and it would not change a thing.
The subplot with a faclie conflict between Ajay and Rakulβs character in the middle is entirely superfluous and directed in the most horrendous of manners. A song? Really? So is everything after Tabuβs wonderful scene at the penultimate moment of the film. Just when you think they have found their footing, the director pulls the rug beneath your feet for another half hour of plot contrivances.
I also wanna talk about the screenplay. It is lazy. There are no salient character arcs. For a film that cou
