What should I buy if I want a game set in Edo or Sengoku period of Japan?
Although dragons, goblins, wolves, and slimes are great, I'm recently getting burnt out seeing them in games. Biblically-close demons and angels from SMT / Persona and creatures from Yokai Watch have been refreshing for me in terms of designs, themes, and story. I realized that I haven't played many JRPG with traditional Japanese themes.
I've played or atleast tried to play these and found their settings incredibly beautiful
- Sakuna of Rice and Ruin
- Nioh
- Sekiro
- Muramasa: The Demon Blade
- Okami and Okamiden
- Ghost of Tsushima

TIL about Makuragaeshi which are Japanese spirits that visit people at night to flip their pillows over. They're mentioned in stories from the Edo period to modern times. In ancient Japan, they believed the soul left the body during dreams and that it couldn't return if the pillow was flipped.

Dreamt that I was playing a Morrowind MMO mod set in Edo-period Japan called "Guar or Dreugh???!?". Every NPC was Colin Farrell in disguise and if you outed him he'd stab you with a butcher's knife (default weapon). Most players were called "Steve" because it made you immune to NPC damage.

Were poetry meetings forbidden at any point during the Edo period in Japan?
Hello, thanks for reading. English is not my first language, so i apologize for any grammatical errors.
Just as i ask in the title, i would like to know if poetry meetings were ever forbidden/made illegal/considered innappropiate at any point during the Edo period in Japan. Specifically for the Samurai class.
I am by no means a history weeb but i do enjoy learning about the Edo period and last week, while rewatching a japanese movie i like a lot i noticed that it is mentioned towards the end that someone got 'arrested for holding a poetry meeting'; and, even though i cannot quote/find all of the sources right now, i am quite sure this has not been the only time i have encountered a statement of the like in a japanese movie or history book. I am certain in my head that i once read somewhere that, not all Samurai, but at least some of them thought that poetry was kinda considered an "inappropriate" art for them, and that it suited the 'noble' class better. I am pretty sure i even read somewhere that some daimyos would enforce the whole 'bunbu-ryΕdΕ' quite firmly and would punish their vassals if they were to engage in kinda "flowery" arts more suited for women and nobles, as would be poetry.
I have been trying to confirm that with facts, trying to find something about it in some history book, or anything at all but Google is not giving me any results. Now I dont know if i am just gessing it, or if i imagined it, or if it was mentioned in a some movie/anime as a fact when it is in fact fiction and that got me confused, but now i cannot shake the idea out of head.
So, if anyone is able to confirm/unconfirm it for me i would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot!

Dyk, in Japan the color purple means royalty, power, ambitious and nobility. Common people are forbidden to wear clothes with purple color on it. Purple dye was hard and expensive to make that mostly royals wear them. In the Edo period, purple became fashionable for Kabuki actors. That explains...

Need Ideas for a Mage 20th Game set in Edo-period Japan c.1650
Pretty much the title. I'm getting the game together and just want to brainstorm some ideas on where to take the story. The characters are not very combat-oriented, so preferably I'd like some thoughts to get me started on intrigue plots and some puzzles.
Characters:
A Life-Mage Acupuncturist (Healer).
An Entropy-Mage Poet (Murder She Wrote)
A Mind-Mage Mysterious Child (Mind Control via Talking to someone)

"During the nearly two centuries of restricted foreign contact during the Edo period (1600β1868), the Japanese people still maintained a curiosity about foreign cultures. This map, published in the early 19th century, depicts an enormous archipelago representing Japan at the center of the world. Inset images and descriptions of foreign people, the distance from Japan to their lands, and differences in climate are noted.
The locations listed include the βPygmy country, 14,000 riβ (1 ri = 2.4 miles), βWoman country, 14,000 ri,β and βBlack people country, 75,000 ri.β In the lower right, America is said to be populated by βpeople who are taller than in our country, white and beautifulβ¦the further south you go, the bigger people become; at the southernmost end of South America lies the Chiika-koku (country of tall people).β The descriptions give a sense of the limited geographic knowledge and the stereotyped portrayals of foreigners in Japan in this period."

In Samurai Champloo, the main character is a 15 year old in search of her father who went into hiding from the authorities for years. Did these kinds of long journeys in search of a loved one ever happen in Japan's Edo period or is there a similar parallel in other countries around that time?
Here's a fan-made map from an old post in r/SamuraiChamploo that shows what kind of route they likely took in the show. For as anachronistic as this show gets, I'd love to know if there's some kind of real-world records, diaries, or journals that any ordinary person would've written down, all in the hopes that some people in the future could remember them for it.

What musical scales did they use in Japan's edo period?
Can anyone tell me about the technical aspect of Japanese music in the edo period? I feel like there should be more to my research than just "traditional/ancient" Japanese music. I tried to post on r/ethnomusicology but that sub has been inactive for a month
