Test Invite & Competency Dictionaries

I have been invited to do an online test next week for a PM-02 position that will assess three competencies related to client service (i.e. Thinking Skills, Working with Others, Client Focus). A few weeks ago, someone here suggested that a poster consult a competency dictionary to prepare for an interview and I thought that was great advice. Does anyone have a competency dictionary to recommend? I did some googling, and only found some for the Public Service from the 90s or early 2000s.

As stated in the invitation, "ESDC has entrusted the administration of these evaluations to Evaluation Personnel Selection International (EPSI), a specialized third party service provider (http://www.epsi-inc.com/)." I checked out EPSI's website, but didn't find anything that describes the specific competencies that will be assessed.

While the competencies seem pretty general, I would like to do a bit of prep beforehand, so any advice or resources would be appreciated!

1 Year's Worth of Data

First, if you want to know how to get good at Japanese read this post by Doth

**This is meant to be seen as what possible results you might get as an average Japanese learner if you were to input solidly for one year. Of course, specific gains will differ for everyone and how much time you put in each day. I understand that my numbers are lower than average compared to others who subscribe to similar learning methods. **

Background Info

I began learning Japanese on October 12th, 2019, so this is just beyond the two-year mark. When I started, I had no other experience learning a language besides in High School with a textbook, so thatโ€™s where I started. I bought Genki one and two and made my way through them. For a complete beginner for a language like Japanese compared to a romantic language (for a native English speaker) I found Genki I to be a totally fine introductory resource. Any other textbook after Genki I would be useless, it would be best to just start mining and reading something easy. So, ultimately wasting about 6 months.

In June of 2020, I started reading for the first time which was far slower looking back. Slowly started vocab mining, thinking something like the N4 would be maybe obtainable after a year or two. But I continued with Tae Kimโ€™s Grammar Guide and mining Yotsuba like everyone else. I found the experience overall okay but it was not as satisfying given my low vocabulary. But, around this time I started reading more and more, found communities that urged more input, and eventually inputting outside of a textbook was the only way to improve.

Reading List

Like I mentioned I started mining and reading Yotsuba as it was recommended. I strongly recommend this as the first manga series to read, itโ€™s very aptly the best introductory material. After, I read Aria again recommended to me. Absolutely fantastic series with, really great range of vocab. Then I read a range of different manga which ultimately turned into ๅฐ่ชฌ and then a few novels. In May I challenged myself and read ใƒŽใƒซใ‚ฆใ‚งใƒผใฎๆฃฎ and found it decently easy but I didnโ€™t mind it since at the time I was intensively mining anime. But as months went on I figured mining novels was going to be my best bet at making reading novels easier. Tho

'tis the season for bad history about Christianity & paganism | connections with Mithraism, Sol Invictus, Saturnalia, Tammuz, pagan conversion strategy, all debunked here

[I have edited this post as a result of this exchange]

Introduction

Every year in December a predictable pattern of memes appears claiming Christmas is a Christian hijack of a pagan festival. These memes are inconsistent on the details of exactly what was hijacked. Sometimes it's the seasonal solstice celebration, sometimes it's the Roman festival Saturnalia, sometimes it's the memorial of the Mesopotamian god Tammuz, sometimes it's the festival of the Roman god Sol Invictus and Mithraism. But they all agree on one point; Christmas was invented as a Christian takeover of an original pagan festival.

For a five minute video version of this post, go here.

Why this bad history persists

Certain standard reference works, such as the New Encyclopedia Britannica and Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of World Religions, actually support this claim with soberly written and referenced articles.

>"The reason why Christmas came to be celebrated on December 25 remains uncertain, but most probably the reason is that early Christians wished the date to coincide with the pagan Roman festival marking the โ€œbirthday of the unconquered sunโ€ (natalis solis invicti); this festival celebrated the winter solstice, when the days again begin to lengthen and the sun begins to climb higher in the sky." [1]

Internet fact checker Snopes agrees; Christmas was invented to provide an alternative to the celebrations of Mithraism, a rival pagan religion which threatened Christianity.

>"The idea of celebrating the Nativity on December 25 was first suggested early in the fourth century CE, a clever move on the part of Church fathers who wished to eclipse the December 25 festivities of a rival pagan religion, Mithraism, which threatened the existence of Christianity." [2]

This is supported even by more scholarly online sources such as The Conversation, "an independent source of news and views, sourced from the academic and research community".

>"It was chosen by Pope Leo I, bishop of Rome (440-461), to coincide with the Festival of the Saturnalia, when Romans worshipped Saturn, the sun god. ...Leo thought it would distract his Roman congregation from sun worship by celebrating the feast of Christโ€™s birth on the same day. ...It is true to say that the west

[AMA] I am an Arhat. Ask me anything about practice and lived experience due to practice

Introduction:

  1. Came to meditation due to depression and anxiety that lasted for almost a decade.
  2. Began meditating in 2016. Panic attacks stopped in a week. Anxiety stopped in 3 months. Depression stopped in .... I don't remember ... maybe 8 months
  3. 3500 + hours of formal practice to reach Arhatship. Near continuous mindfulness exercises through out the day
  4. Getting to Stream Entry involved a taste of the dukkha nanas
  5. Getting to Sakadagami was a breeze
  6. Getting to Anagami was 9 months (maybe more) of sheer dukkha nana torture. Finally figured out what to do, once figured out applied the techniques and concluded to Anagami-ship in 3 weeks
  7. This period of the dukkha nanas was from late 2019 to late 2020. Very early in this period developed an auto immune disorder called lichen planus. Had to take strong immuno suppressants. Problem kept getting worse. It reached a stage in early 2020 when my doc wanted to ramp up immuno suppresants. The pandemic was in full force, I was shaking in my shoes with fear. Literally afraid for my life. Understood that lichen planus happens due to anxiety. Was absolutely thunderstruck. Completely fucked! Here I am a Sakadagami ... and anxiety??? I spent 3 days cultivating tremendous tranquility. multiple hours during the day, almost the entire night. Lichen Planus lesions on my body completely healed in those 3 days. My doctor did not know how this could happen! I was just happy I had skills! At no point did I ever consider that I should not see a doctor - I was a Sakada-gami - not an Idiot-gami. But this level of yogic skill is possible! You should know. This is possible if you cultivate competency! NOT if you slack.
  8. From late 2020 onwards to 3-4 months ago concluded to Arhat-ship
  9. My project will be done once I have recorded every technique I have learnt and post it here on this subreddit. I intend to create a series as a cookbook. From first sit ... to Arhatship.

Reflecting on 3 Years of Learning Japanese

I figure, with the start of a new year, now would be a good time to reflect on my (nearly) 3 years of learning Japanese, both for my own benefit and also to perhaps give people starting out a sense of potential pitfalls.

To quickly give a summary of my Japanese learning journey, I started in very late February 2019. I'm not exactly sure what caused me to start at this point: I can say, for certain, that I was fairly regularly watching anime, because I liked having it on in the background while I did my homework and I'd recently gotten into visual novels through Persona 5 and Danganronpa, leading to a few incidents where I would try to read an English fan translation of a VN only to realize it was unreadably bad. I came in with a fairly minimal background in Japanese media in comparison, I think, to most Japanese learners.

The Initial Phase of Chaos and Confusion (I've endeavored to make this as comprehensible as possible, but I'm talking about things that happened almost 3 years ago, and my initial methods were confused)

The first thing I started with was Duolingo. I binged the early lessons over the course of 2-3 lessons, before doing further research (possibly here?) where I heard that Lingodeer was better. I ended up not liking that, and shifting over to Genki. I did Genki 1 over the course of maybe a month or two. By this, I mean I did the reading at the beginning of the chapters and did all the activities in the workbook (handwritten in kana) I didn't need a teacher for, skipping listening comprehension exercises. I think in Lesson 9 I switched over to typing up the exercises. I ended up stopping Genki at Lesson 15 in Genki 2. As memory serves, I got too busy doing Wanikani, which I started a little after Genki. Simultaneously, I was struggling to do Core 2000. It would take me easily over an hour and a half to do my 200 or so daily reviews due to intense difficulty with kanji. As I did more Wanikani, this difficulty gradually eased. I ended up being inconsistent with the Anki early on due to this difficulty. By May, my main methods were Wanikani and Bunpro, the reviews for which were taking me about about an hour. I got to level 10 in Wanikani and through most of the N5 and N4 points in Bunpro (reading Tae Kim in addition) before dropping both to go hard on Anki (making my own deck and dropping Core about 1000 words in) and watching shows with Japanese subtitles/reading Japanese visual novels. These formed the core of my study regimen for the

To the men and Libfems who think we've reached the point where 50/50 is fair....

Apparently we "don't need" feminism anymore because we've achieved "equality", here's an essay. It's from the 70s-90s and it STILL hits like a ton of bricks.

Emphasis is mine.

The Last Post for Feminism

Sandra Coney

I am a post-feminist. I must be. According to a whole lot of people who must know better than me, we are now in a post-feminist era, experiencing postfeminism. I needed to go to the dictionary to sort this post bit out. I found out there are lots of post words. Some unfortunately donโ€™t give many signposts to the interpretation of post-feminist. For instance, post-Devonian, post-Carboniferous, post-Vedic and post-Permian. What were they?

I began to wonder if the post was a death sentence, a sign that whatever it was had been consigned to oblivion. Post-anal, I had trouble with too. What could be more post already than anal, I pondered.

Whether being post is good or bad wasnโ€™t solved by the dictionary. It varies with the circumstances. Obviously being post-war is better than being war, but is post-coital better than being coital? I doubt it.

Other words gave me more clues. Post-election, post-natal and post-menopausal were words I understood. So post is what comes after something distinct has happened, itโ€™s the period after something which has finished. โ€œAnd itโ€™s not important enough to get its own name.

Iโ€™m not clear who made the decision that the feminist task is completed and we can move on to the next stage. There were no resolutions that I know of passed through feminist conferences, no proclamations in womenโ€™s bars. It comes as a bit of a shock to find that youโ€™re redundant, that youโ€™ve been beavering away on something when it wasnโ€™t really necessary, like surfacing from the coalface with black lung only to find everyoneโ€™s converted to natural gas.

I read about it first in magazines, those oracles of our time. Some journalist obviously spotted for us what we could not see, that the beachhead had been reached while we thought we were still pinned down in the tretiehes. Iโ€™m grateful. Without being told, I and hundreds of other protofeminists might still have been expending our energy on irrelevant subjects like whether women in Westport get abortions.

Iโ€™m glad weโ€™ve arrived at post-feminism. Iโ€™m relieved weโ€™re in the post part now. Think of all the things feminists can stop doing.

They can start writing to their mothers and friends instead of newspapers and politicians. They can have parties and dinners inst

Just One Drop -- Chapter 4

Just One Drop

Chapter Four โ€“ La Vita Nuova

Things happened rather quickly after Tom agreed to the meeting. Taโ€™nu casually leaned back in his chair, giving the Human a polite smile while imagining what could possibly be happening in the next room. Tom frowned down at the table for a moment, before meeting his eyes. โ€œIโ€™m meeting someone with an Imperial writ? Thatโ€™sโ€ฆ what, exactly?"

โ€œThe legal power to act without hindrance, to an extent. Itโ€™sโ€ฆ complicated,โ€ Taโ€™nu kept a frown at bay, but he worried over what Mivโ€™eire might do with her authority, and suspected his smile was starting to look as glassy as it felt. Between the lack of time to prepare on one hand, and Axiaโ€™s aunt on the other, what should have been an easy interrogation was far too precarious for his taste. After turning Tomโ€™s question over in his mind, he decided to seize on it.

โ€œYou understand that I need to make some recommendations on how to proceed with your situation. Fortunately, there is someone here who wants to meet you, and I believe she has an option you may want to consider very carefully. Her name is Lady Mivโ€™eire. She doesnโ€™t speak English particularly well, however, Iโ€™m sure we can muddle through any questions, mm?โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t aware that I had a โ€˜situationโ€™ until now, Agent Taโ€™nu.โ€

Tom sourly digested the sudden change in his expectations, as he looked across at the Agent. The rug didnโ€™t seem to have been pulled out from under him just yet, but after the brief conversation Taโ€™nu had on his omnipad, it felt like the world was tugging at it. Still, the little Shilโ€™vati had seemed more than a little flustered during the call, and Tom couldnโ€™t help wondering if Taโ€™nu realized that heโ€™d spoken in English.

Taโ€™nu rallied, feeling he had fully regained his leverage on the conversation. โ€œWell, Iโ€™m sure you understand that there are always situations. My work is to make sure they go away or are resolved as easily as possible for everyone concerned.โ€

Tom slid back in his seat and considered, โ€œAgent, as the 'situation' you may make go away, thatโ€™s not nearly as comfortable for me as it may be for you.โ€

โ€œYou might be surprised,โ€ the little Shilโ€™vati replied dryly, before giving the Human one of his best smiles. For all that he tried to be a picture of warm confidence, he couldnโ€™t help savor the irony for what it was. The moment didnโ€™t last, and the knocking on the door might have lasted a whole second before it burst open. Axia barely led the way.

โ€œHello, Tom!โ€ Mivโ€™e

On the Gender Empathy Gap and its correlates: a comprehensive collection of resources (Part IV)

Education

As cited in Perspectives in Male Psychology, Louise Liddon & John Barry, page 79: > An Israeli study of nearly 30,000 pupils in more than 300 schools examined data for three cohorts of Jewish secular high-school seniors in the years 2000-2002 (Lavy, 2004). Student matriculation exams were routinely graded in two ways: an external grade which is blind to name and sex of the pupil, and an internal grade which is non-blind. The pupil's final grade is a mean of the internal and external grades. This study found that boys were given lower grades in the non-blind assessments across all nine subjects studied. The researcher, having ruled out the other possible explanations, concluded the discrepancy in scoring was a result of bias in the unblinded grading. A strength of this study is that it is a natural experiment.

The 2004 papers is freely available here. See also an updated version of the paper: Do gender stereotypes reduce girls' or boys' human capital outcomes? Evidence from a natural experiment (Lavy, 2008)

In PISA 2012 results: The ABC of Gender Equality in Education: Aptitude, Behaviour, Confidence (OECD, 2015) it was found that "teachers generally award girls higher marks than boys [for the same exact work]" (page 159): > The report also shows that teachers generally award girls higher marks than boys [for the same exact work], given what would be expected after considering their performance in PISA. This practice is particularly apparent in language-of-instruction courses. Girlsโ€™ better marks may reflect the fact that they tend to be โ€œbetter studentsโ€ than boys: they tend to do what is required and expected of them, thanks to better self-regulation skills, and they are more driven to excel in school. Thoughts on perception of intelligence and type

Social ideas of intelligence can manifest through several functions.

Ti: Deep understanding and logical coherency. Maths, philosophy, coding.

Te: Applied understanding and practical efficiency. Common sense, puzzle solving, business smarts, engineering.

Ni: Abstracting a concept to its fundamental, and seeing patterns stemming from those fundamentals. Rare insights, heart of the matter, Vertical thinking, pattern recognition, correct decision making, wisdom, expert, can see a single answer.

Ne: Abstracting a concept to its parts, and seeing patterns linked between parts of that concept and other concepts. Creativity, out of the box, Horizontal/Lateral thinking, linked pattern recognition, visionary, can see a world of possibilites.

Se: Physical attention to detail, and physical proficiency. Craftsmen and virtuosos. Skill moreso than intelligence.

Si: Recalling an object for what it was. Data, memory, facts, history, dictionary and thesaurus, encylopaedia, language.

Really, its the Feeling functions that aren't typically associated with intelligence, though they can be related to manipulation and charisma (Fe,) or incredible literary or artistic insight (Fi,) which is common in success and competency, if not intelligence. MLKJr had great Fe, and George RR Martin has great Fi.

I wrote this behemoth: https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/rddcmy/games_i_sold_and_why_i_sold_them_what_games_have/

Now I wrote this behemoth: (And when you've finished reading, here's Part 2: https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/rh79ze/top_50_games_and_why_i_kept_them_part_2_which/)

  1. Yu-Gi-Oh! WHY DID I BUY IT: Because of English-dubbed Japanese cartoons edited enough to be in compliance with marketing laws but still aimed towards selling merchandise to impressionable children.

Also because of competitive tournament scene players encouraging a lonely teenager looking for acceptance and something to do on Saturdays to spill their wallet on pricey online cards in hopes of competing.

Later because of being a studious young adult, more price conscious and disappointed in the game deciding to sell, but keeping enough to play the older, nostalgia-laden period of the game.

PLAYS: /0

WHY DID I KEEP IT: I have deep nostalgia for the game. While I didn't watch much of the anime past the first couple of seasons, I remember desiring overpriced, terrible cards on display at my local comic shop and making up stories using the monsters in the starter decks I did have. Kojikocy was the dude!

In my early teens, I went to a local event and got trounced. I picked up enough cards to make a mediocre, but effective anti-meta (1) deck and managed to beat the local who had all the expensive, shiny cards.

I played for a couple of years, through what's later considered one of the best periods of the game, Goat Format, so named after the card Scapegoat, which featured prominently (and despite Scapegoat making sheep, not goats). I made a friend whose still my gaming buddy today and we became the main local players. We went to a few bigger events, but the highly-competitive environment full of rule sharks (2) wasn't something I ever found fun.

I gradually became less interested in playing the game itself, moving onto judging and eventually running my own events, with the help of the local Tournament Organizer at the time.

A few years later, after a period of illness, I dabbled in the game once more for a year or so, before restarting my own gaming group. A local player introduced me to Catan. With Yu-Gi-Oh! quickly falling down the hole of power creep and transitioning into the stilted interaction, Rube Goldberg (3) combo-driven game it is today, I jumped shi

cPTSD, IFS (Internal Family Systems) & MDMA experiences?

Have you used both IFS and MDMA to heal childhood trauma? Can you share whatever you're comfortable with re: how they worked together? Especially interested in hearing from anyone who struggled to do IFS work.

Whyโ€ฆ

After seeing repeated references to IFS in this and related subs, I've been doing some reading/listening on the topic. Planning a session within the next few weeks, and trying to set up some sort of path or framework leading into it.

On a head level, I can understand the concept of parts and a higher Self. But while I have near constant inner dialogue โ€“ which I would think suggests competing parts โ€“ I don't currently see/feel any distinct parts I could address.

If/when I do distinguish parts, the process of talking to them feels like, for me, it would be fake, silly or useless. Or, it would except for the case studies and anecdotal evidence I read/heard. Those make IFS seem clearly beneficial.

I have read that MDMA may help me connect to my Self. Reading that made me feel like I may be getting ahead of myself worrying about talking to parts before I can see anything beyond the next step or two of the journey.

I'm not sure of the proper dictionary or DSM definition of dissociation, but if it means walls like China and/or otherwise shut down, that's definitely a factor. Also a factor is years of childhood trauma from multiple sources. So not just 1-2 things I can easily pinpoint and talk to.

NB: For various reasons, I need to do this work on my own at present.

Hardy's talk on Dec.15th

Finally I could spare some time to make Japanese transcription of excerpts from Hardy's talk on Dec.15th. Most of his talk was not on MS but on our own iPSC pipeline and NK cells, and what was said on MS was nothing new to you. Basically, what he said was that everything is on schedule as previously stated except for the timing of Key Open for TREASURE. Wisdom and Imz72 have posted some translations of his talk and share holders' responses in timely manner, so most of you have already grasped the outline. The below is for those who want to know the exact words spoken by Hardy about MS or about ATHX. Since I think basic outline (that is, same as before) is enough info for most of you, and even those few people who want to read this will not be in a hurry, I just paste Japanese transcription I had made tonight for now, and when I find time to work on it again, translate it into English paragraph by paragraph. So, if you are interested in to read it, come back later to check. I guess it's better late than never.

(โ†“ Thanks to sinchimal who quickly provided us DeepL translations for Japanese transcription, you've already had chance to get to read it. I proofread+ made some corrections to it)

Hyperinflation is Coming- The Dollar Endgame: PART 4.0, โ€œAt Worldโ€™s Endโ€

I am getting increasingly worried about the amount of warning signals that are flashing red for hyperinflation- I believe the process has already begun, as I will lay out in this paper. The first stages of hyperinflation begin slowly, and as this is an exponential process, most people will not grasp the true extent of it until it is too late. I know Iโ€™m going to gloss over a lot of stuff going over this, sorry about this but I need to fit it all into four posts without giving everyone a 400 page treatise on macro-economics to read. Counter-DDs and opinions welcome. This is going to be a lot longer than a normal DD, but I promise the pay-off is worth it, knowing the history is key to understanding where we are today.

SERIES (Parts 1-4) TL/DR: We are at the end of a MASSIVE debt supercycle. This 80-100 year pattern always ends in one of two scenarios- default/restructuring (deflation a la Great Depression) or inflation (hyperinflation in severe cases (a la Weimar Republic). The United States has been abusing itโ€™s privilege as the World Reserve Currency holder to enforce its political and economic hegemony onto the Third World, specifically by creating massive artificial demand for treasuries/US Dollars, allowing the US to borrow extraordinary amounts of money at extremely low rates for decades, creating a Sword of Damocles that hangs over the global financial system.

The massive debt loads have been transferred worldwide, and sovereigns are starting to call our bluff. Governments papered over the 2008 financial crisis with debt, but never fixed the underlying issues, ensuring that the crisis would return, but with greater ferocity next time. Systemic risk (from derivatives) within the US financial system has built up to the point that collapse is all but inevitable, and the Federal Reserve has demonstrated it will do whatever it takes to defend legacy finance (banks, broker/dealers, etc) and government solvency, even at the expense of everything else (The US Dollar).

Iโ€™ll break this down into four parts. ALL of this is interconnected, so please read these in order:

Part One: The Global Monetary System- โ€œA New Romeโ€ <

[Part Two: Derivatives, Systemic Risk, & Nitroglycerin- โ€œThe Ouroborosโ€ < ](https://www.reddit.com/r/Superst

From med school graduation to getting a job in Germany - my experience so far, including German learning up to C1 level, overall strategy/thought process and which recruitment agency I used to find me exactly the job I wanted [AMA]

Hi dear r/medicalschoolEU,

Times really flies! Almost 2 years after graduating med school in Czech Republic, I'm very happy to share with you guys that I got my first job offer confirmation in Germany, in orthopedics/trauma surgery at an affiliated academic hospital of the Otto-von-Guericke university in Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, offer that I promptly accepted after a short but convincing interview.

So, I thought that it could maybe be useful for the many people in this sub seeking to do their residency training in Germany if I wrote this post about my experience so far. In order to do this, I'll divide this post into 3 "chapters":

  1. How I learned German up to C1 level
  2. Why I used an agency and why this specific one
  3. What lead me to accept an offer in a small, rural city in eastern Germany

1. How I learned German up to C1 level

Well, first things first, learning the language. I'll start with a mistake or so to say, a regret: not having started to learn German during med school. As many of you already know, I studied in Czech Republic at the Charles university, so not a particularly forgiving university in terms of effort you need to put in. I kinda always knew I wanted to go to Germany for residency but all the pressure and heavy schedule made it very complicated for me to concentrate in something other than graduating, so I decided to focus first on what is really important (I mean, graduating) and then taking some time off after med school to learn the language full time.

So, my first recommendation: get 1 on 1 classes asap and don't waste money on group classes. Why? Very simple answer but not a obvious one: 1 on 1 classes are actually cheaper and much more efficient at the end of the day.

"More efficient yeah but cheaper??? This guy must have been chugging a few German beers already..."

No, I guarantee you I didn't :P Cheaper because let's imagine you pay 10 Euro per hour in a group class and you have, let's say, 6 students in your class. The teacher needs to focus on all 6 of you and while the teacher focuses on your classmate, he isn't focusing on you, on your doubts and on your progress as an individual. So, most of the time in a group class isn't really focused on you, on your needs as a German language student and on your own progress. From those 60 minutes you are paying for, you only get a fraction of that time dedicated to you and this time dedicated to you is much more valuable than time dedica

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
