βOur deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, which most frightens us. Playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people wonβt feel insecure around you.β - Timo Cruz [Nelson Mandela] [[Michael Scott]]
The Roger Ebert review below alone is worth the read. He likens the character of Coach Carter to... Bill Cosby. I bumped it to the top of categories. Thereβs also a great piece of trivia.
Remember that movie Ben Affleck ripped off basically shot for shot? Including the scene where one of his players comes to him crying after a traumatic event, begging to be let back on the team? Thatβs Coach Carter. The film debut of both Channing Tatum, and Ashanti. The highest debut box office weekend for an MTV film ever.
Ridiculous intro question: most realistic basketball scenes ever?
βThe actors went through a three week, five hour per day training camp
βSome basketball scenes were shot over 100 times according to IMDb in order to create an authentic look and feel
βThe actors had to learn a 72 page playbook, most scenes were improvised by calling a play from the playbook
βNo body doubles were used for basketball scenes
β Channing Tatum had never played basketball before but hired a personal coach in addition to the films three week training camp. The real life Ken Carter (who was on set every day to make sure the basketball scenes looked real) pointed out that Tatum was a great defender. Because of that, Tatums scenes where heβs playing great defense were written in
βMark Robert Ellis, the sports choreographer for the film also did choreography for Any Given Sunday, Varsity Blues, The Replacements, Hardball, Playmakers, and the dark knight rises
β-all films praised for their realistic sports scenes
IβM BUMPING ROG TO THE TOP OF CATEGORIES
What did Rog. say?: He liked it. But... he compares the character of Coach Carter to.... Bill Cosby
ββLike Bill Cosby, Jackson is arguing against the anti-intellectual message that success for young black males is better sought in the worlds of rap and sports than in the classroomβ
βactual movie review: βJackson has the usual big speeches assigned to all coaches in all sports movies, and delivers on them, big time. His passion makes familiar scenes feel new. "I see a system that's designed for you to fail," he tells his players, pointing out that young black men are 80
... keep reading on reddit β‘Iβm keeping the names out of the post to keep peoples memories untainted. Iβd like to know what everyone else remembers before knowing who either of the actors are. Iβll attempt the blackout strip but Iβm terrible with things like that so fingers crossed it works lol
Just saw a post on the other sub and it had someone saying that the lead actor in Coach Carter has changed. This is a mind blowing one for me because it was never the current actor for me. I only ever gave the movie a chance because it starred someone I liked. Had the current actor been the star I wouldnβt have watched it since I actively try to avoid movies heβs in. Add to that the fact that I also donβt like basketball movies and I had zero reason to ever give this movie a chance. Yet Iβve seen it dozens of times despite these facts. None of my memories of the movie include the current actor. In fact, my strongest memory of the movie is the lead actor, who apparently was never in the movie. When discussing my favorite movies of his Coach Carter is always on the list (3rd) and yet never once did anyone ever correct me to the fact that it was the other actor.
Update: attempted the blackout but it didnβt work so I got rid of it π€¦π»ββοΈπ
I feel Coach Carter would be a great choice for Bill, Russillo and TBD. Iβm definitely staying once Mr. Cruz starts his impossible push-up/ suicide task. As a basketball movie, bill could use his βare we sure channing Tatum isnβt 74% better than Cruz?β Or, βwould Sam Jacksonβs son have played if he wasnβt his son? Iβm 63% sure he wouldnβt have.β And the clear best scene is when Cruzβs teammates finish the suicides/ push-ups with him, letting Cruz get back on the team. Wonky basketball offensive philosophy from Sam Jackson or should coach pop take notes?Thoughts?
Does anyone here use the Valkyrie program and can say whether itβs worth it?
He's clearly the Cam whisperer. Whatever he told Cam last year worked. Both have gone on record about how their collaboration produced Cam's big turnaround. Then Cam went to Steph this offseason and messed it all up. Pay this man whatever he wants. It'll be worth it. Cam is the key to this team's future. We've seen what he can do. There's a star locked away deep inside. Vince is the only one who has the key.
Carter at 42 beats out 41-year-old owner Robert Pera, 34-year-old head coach Taylor Jenkins and 30-year-old GM Zach Kleiman.
I'm not sure if this is more impressive for the Grizzlies or for Carter.
Rob Gherson is a goaltending coach based in Toronto who, after reading Charlie O'Connor's recent article on the Athletic about Hart, put together a series of twitter threads identifying two issues affecting Carter Hart's play this season, and fixes for them.
This may be the sort of thing that is better suited in the Flyers subreddit, but I thought fans of the game who may not be particularly well-versed in goaltending technique (like myself) would be interested in seeing a pro discussing some of the nuances of a position that is often dismissed as "Voodoo".
First thread / issue: Pre-shot compression.
Second thread / issue: Stick position.
Third thread / fixes: getting and staying lower, and practicing stick position.
I think Coach Billy is right, Carter isnβt remembering what really happened to him correctly. He may have suffered some memory lost and just THINK thatβs what happened. It could be that someone lied and told him that Billy did what he did but in reality, that didnβt happen.
