Steven Donziger sued Chevron for contaminating the Amazon and won. Chevron was found guilty and ordered to pay $18,000,000,000. Yesterday, Donziger went to prison, in the whatβs being called the first-ever case of corporate prosecution.
Over three decades of drilling in the Amazon, Chevron deliberately dumped more than 16 billion gallons of toxic wastewater and 17 million gallons of crude oil into the rainforest. Chevron committed ecocide to save moneyβabout $3 per barrel. Many experts consider it the biggest oil-related disaster in history, with the total area affected 30 times larger than the Exxon-Valdez spill. Chevron created a super-fund site in the Amazon rainforest that is estimated to be the size of Rhode Island.
Steven Donziger visited Ecuador in 1993, where he says he saw "what honestly looked like an apocalyptic disaster," including children walking barefoot down oil-covered roads and jungle lakes filled with oil. Industrial contamination caused local tribes to suffer from mouth, stomach, and uterine cancers, respiratory illnesses, along with birth defects and spontaneous miscarriages.
As an attorney, Donziger represented over 30,000 farmers and indigenous Ecuadorians in a case against Chevron and won. In 2011, Chevron was found guilty and ordered to pay $18 billion. Rather than accept this decision, the company vowed to fight the judgment "until Hell freezes over, and then fight it out on the ice." Chevron has been persecuting Steven Donziger for his involvement ever since. In an internal memo, Chevron wrote, βOur L-T [long-term] strategy is to demonize Donziger.β
Chevron sued Donziger for 60 billion dollars, which is the most any individual has ever been sued for in American legal history. Over the course of ten years, armed with a legal team numbering in the thousands, the company set out to destroy Donziger. Chevron had Donziger disbarred, froze his bank accounts, slapped him with millions in fines without allowing him a jury, forced him to wear a 24h ankle monitor, imposed a lien on his home where he lives with his family, and shut down his ability to earn a living. Donziger has been under house arrest since August 2019.
Chevron has used its clout and advertising dollars to keep the story from being reported. βIβve experienced this multiple times with media,β Donziger said. βAn entity will start writing the story, spend a lot of time on it, then the story doesnβt run.β This unprecedented legal situation is happening in New York

I had started a new job at a senior software engineer at an ISP after it had been bought by someone who liked to buy companies, kill the unprofitable parts, and immediately resell the rest at a premium since it looked profitable.
I'm sitting in the office one day when there's an emergency "all hands" meeting and someone stood up and gave a presentation about how they were shutting down our offices. We all had to move to a business park in a major city three hours away.
All software developers would have their relocation costs covered, but anyone else had to pay their own way. If you didn't relocate, you didn't have a job. The man asked if there were any questions. The very first question was, "who are you?"
Seems it was our CEO. No one actually knew him and he hadn't bothered to introduce himself.
I immediately volunteered for the relocation committee and in that committee, I gave a presentation about sociologist William Whyte and a study he did:
> Virtually all corporate relocations involve a move to a location which is closer to the CEOβs home than the old location. Whyte discovered this principle after an extensive study of Fortune 500 companies that left New York City for the suburbs in the 1950s and 1960s. They always had big, complicated Relocation Committees which carefully studied all the options and chose, coincidentally Iβm sure, to move to within half a mile of the CEOβs home in Danbury, Connecticut. Whyte also showed that these companies all tanked after the relocation.
The reason are obvious: with a huge relocation, you lose a lot of staff with detailed business knowledge and the new staff repeat mistakes the old staff knew not to do.
The company relented and agreed they'd pay for relocation for the accounting team, but tech support? They're a dime a dozen. We'll replace anyone who doesn't move.
Big mistake.
We relocate and immediately it becomes clear there's a problem. The CEO stopped by and asked me what I thought about the business park and I replied "we're well outside the city. People who want to live in X can't easily commute here. People who don't want to live in X won't want to work in a soulless business park close to a city they hate." I realized this was a bad thing to say and apo

My old colleague from CT has started a new job in Danbury, and she wants me to join her team. The position offers $90k to $115k salary. I currently make $63,500 in the city. The catch? I sold my car in March 2021, and would need to be in the office in Danbury three times a week.
Danbury is a two hour drive from Manhattan, and the trains that run there aren't early enough for my expected work schedule.
Since my lease in the city is up at the end of March anyways, I'm considering moving to Stamford, which would be a 50 minute drive to Danbury and a 50 minute train ride to the friends I've made in New York City.
My concerns for moving to Stamford are 1) I worry that the commute might be dreadful and 2) I don't know if I'll be able to make friends there as easily as I did in New York City. When I lived in East Haven, it was practically impossible to meet people outside of work, and Bumble BFF was always a hit or miss. I also lived there mostly throughout 2020, so the pandemic didn't help matters. But I'm very worried that if I make the move to Stamford, I might find that I'm just as lonely as I was when I lived in East Haven. Of course, to rectify this, I could always spend every weekend on the train to the city to be with my NYC friends.
Background info: I'm originally from the South, so I have no family or childhood/college connections in Connecticut. I only have a handful of friends/acquaintances left in the state (my two best CT friends moved to SoCal and London last year). CT just happens to be my favorite state.
I moved there for an ex and remained afterwards until I moved from East Haven to Manhattan in April 2021 for a new job and to experience life in NYC while I was still young/in my twenties. But sometimes my heart aches badly for driving around all the gorgeous parts of Connecticut; for the peace and serenity and lifestyle CT offered me. I've now realized that I really took my 900 square foot, one-bedroom apartment in East Haven for granted. I never fully appreciated the freedom I had when I owned my car. I thought the grass would be greener in New York, and while I've certainly become much happier in terms of my social life and I now have the most friends I've ever had since childhood, my quality of life is unbearable at times.
I just don't know what to do. I really enjoyed working with my old colleague, the position she's offering looks like the perfect fit for me, and the money would help me TREMENDOUSLY in life. Yet, I feel like I hav

FYI: I am not a resident of Waterbury, Torrington, or any of the towns in-between, although I have lived in CT for most of my life and have visited both cities on occasion. I am also a frequent traveler on I-84, and drive through Waterbury quite often. Here are my three reasons why the state should consider restoring passenger rail service to Torrington:
1.) People increasingly want to live in places with access to good public transit, and the Naugatuck Valley has potential for revitalization. Torrington already has the bones of what could be a top-notch small city, and passenger rail for commuters traveling to Waterbury, Bridgeport and Stamford would open up new economic opportunities for many people.
2.) CT DOT owns the track between the two cities, and the line is already in fairly good condition. Track rehabilitation costs would be minimal, so costs would be limited to signalization, station construction and ongoing operation/maintenance of the trains.
3.) The I-84/Rt. 8 Mixmaster interchange needs replacing in the next 20-30 years, and will likely require more constant repairs until then. People traveling on Rt. 8 should have the option to avoid the traffic altogether and ride a safe, reliable train instead. Shore Line East was created for this very reason in the 90s, when ongoing construction on I-95 was expected to cause severe delays for commuters along the coast. Thereβs no question as to whether it can be done, rather if there is a willingness to make it happen.
The state recently announced plans to improve the Waterbury Branch, and I was disappointed to see that there was no mention of a potential future extension to Torrington. While I feel that federal infrastructure funds should be prioritized to improve existing rail service and extend rail service to areas that have already been studied extensively over a period of decades (such as the Danbury Branch extension to New Milford), I would like to see at least a study funded to further explore this idea. Let me know your thoughts!
First off, welcome to Superstonk. I know we can be a bit intimidating upon first impression, but I promise that you'll fit right in once you get to know us.
Second, you're probably wondering what all of this Gamestop stuff is about right? You've seen it on the front page, in the news, and spoken about in your friend circles, but you still don't quite get it. You're here for a quick elevator pitch to get you up to speed.
So that's what this post is going to do. I'll lead you to the rabbit hole, but it's up to you if you want to dive in afterwards.
To begin, you need to start thinking of Gamestop as an emerging tech-focused startup company. This startup has over 1.5 billion dollars in cash on hand, it has no significant debt, and it has a user base of 50 million subscribers in their power up rewards program.
Decent numbers right? Now that I have your attention, I'm happy to tell you that this new startup is being led by an activist investor named Ryan Cohen. Who is Ryan Cohen you might ask. All you need to know is that he's someone who has already proven his ability to disrupt industries and outperform giants like Amazon by using customer experience as the cornerstone for success. His philosophy: Delight your customers with exceptional experiences and you drive shareholder value.
You've probably heard of Gamestop referred to as a failing brick and mortar store. What you probably haven't heard, is just how far from the truth that statement really is. Gamestop has already successfully transitioned to ecommerce in the midst of a global pandemic, they've set up massive coast to coast fulfillment warehouses, opened a large homegrown customer service center in the US, and expanded their strategic HQs in tech-focused cities around the country. That small time physical video game retailer you used to know from your childhood? It doesn't exist any more. It's grown the fuck up.
They're not just scaling up in terms of fulfillment and CX, they're also scaling up in terms of the sheer volume of products and SKUs now being offered. From a merchandizing perspective, they now support collectibles, clothing, PC hardware/accessories, and thousands of other products. They've more than doubled their product offerings in the past year alone. This is already having a positive impact on the increase in total revenue being reported on a quarterly basis.
If I don't have your attention yet, now would be a good time to mention the fact that in the past year, they've poac

We're outdoorsy people who like hiking, mountain biking and kayaking, though occasional trips to bigger cities are nice. We don't plan to have kids, but we have big dogs and want a yard.
We don't mind commuting a couple of hours on a train or driving if necessary.
We moved to a commuter-friendly apartment in NJ about three years ago, but we don't like the culture or population density, and our income has allowed us to afford a house.
We looked in Carmel, Brewster, Yorktown Heights and New City in NY, but we found better quality houses in CT, and based on what I've read, I like what the outer Danbury area has to offer.
So given that information, is CT a good choice? I know taxes are high, but that's true for much of the area we're looking in.
The Asian Boyz gang actually had more cliques/subsets than this, so I missed some (maybe i'll add more later). Also, some of these information might not be 100% accurate (like the dates & founders) since I was told different things by different people.
Long Beach, East Side Asian Boyz (ES ABZ): E/S ABZ is the first and the largest ABZ clique/subset in USA that formed around the late 1980s after splitting from the Tiny Rascal Gang. Predominately Cambodian members.
Long Beach, North Side Asian Boyz (NS ABZ): N/S ABZ formed in the early 1990s by ES ABZ. Predominately Cambodian members.
Van Nuys Asian Boys (VN ABS): ABS was formed independently from ABZ in the Van Nuys area in the late 1980s. ABS had members all over LA county. By early 1990s, ABS & ABZ had merged into one gang, but were considered different cliques. ABS started out with mainly Cambodians, Vietnamese, and some Filipinos, but became mostly Vietnamese by mid 1990s. ABS is defunct now.
Van Nuys Asian Boyz (VN ABZ): VN ABZ was created by Long Beach E/S ABZ moving into San Fernando Valley mainly around Van Nuys in the late 1980s. VN ABZ membership is made up of mostly Cambodians.
Chinatown, Asian Boys Insanity (ABI): ABI originated in Chinatown, Los Angeles, independently from ABZ. In the early 1990s, ABI merged with ABZ. ABI then became WS ABZ by mid 1990s. Their membership was mostly Chinese and Vietnamese.
Monterey Park Asian Boyz (MP ABZ): MP ABZ was created by ABI in the early 1990s. MP ABZ became WS ABZ by mid 1990s. Predominately Vietnamese & Chinese.
San Gabriel City, West Side Asian Boyz (W/S ABZ): W/S ABZ was formed in the early 1990s nearing the mid 1990s by ABI and MP ABZ, which both soon also became W/S ABZ. W/S ABZ is made up of mostly Vietnamese, Chinese, and Cambodian members.

... keep reading on reddit β‘Promotions might actually be simultaneously the best and worst part of using Uber's system. There seems to be no consistency from week to week, and whether they're worth it seems to change from day to day.
Last week they were offering $22.50 for 3 consecutive rides. This week it's $10 for the same time window. Some mornings 6-8am it's $12. This week it's $6. Last weekend 30 rides got you $60, this weekend it's $30. 50 would get you 145, this week it's $110.
Every week Uber changes the deal.
So I want to know:What are your feelings on this? What promotion offers would be worth it to you? What is your strategy with promotions? (i.e. which weekly offers do you take?)
The one thing I like about hourly promotions is they're kinda like predictable surge rates and scheduling around them is usually worth it. Having a soft goal each week is good too. That said, anything under $9 for 3 is worthless to me, and even $9 is kind of pushing it. $12+ is generally good and I'll make more of an effort to be in or around a zone if there's one coming up. One thing that's bogus though, is I had a ride ping at exactly 12am the other night and it did not start a consecutive run even though there was a 9-12am//12am-2am set scheduled. I guess that one exact minute the promo is disconnected. I didn't complain though because that ride I got $15 in tips and the next ride started a new set of 3 anyway.
When it comes to weekly I always go for 30 rides. With how my life schedule is, I can't ever really seem to break 30-40 ride range and I don't want to commit to 40 if I can't get it in time. Weekends I do 30-40 as well, same reason. Weekly promos are BS though. The fact that you have to choose them ahead of time, instead of just getting the promo as you reach each goal is trash. Uber needs to change that. Don't force me to select 20/30/40 etc. Just give me the bonus for the highest range I get to by the deadline! A certain number of rides can't always be guaranteed and when a 5 minute ride and 40 minute ride are weighted the same, it becomes pretty obvious that Ubers only goal with setting things up this way is to cheat drivers out of money when they over/underestimate the number of rides they will get during their online hours.
What are all your thoughts?
Edit: I forgot to mention, I'm in CT and I only do UberX. We have 7 zones, and they seem mostly arbitrary. There are a few cities that could easily be promo zones, but aren't (Danbury, Manchester, New London, and more). I don

Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. Hi, family used to live in Bethel years ago and went to school at WCSU. Danbury/Bethel/New Milford is all gone to me.
Was looking to move back to CT as we left about 3 years ago to accomplish some education goals my Wife and I.
We still want to advance ourselves with careers. So when you look at college's in the state. Hartford County is home to slew of private, public, and profit schools. On top of that there are 3 community colleges within Hartford County alone. 3 near by in counties that neighbor Hartford County.
Fairfield County has 2 but they are on the Sound side.
It would of or still make more sense for them to have a CC in Danbury.
You would get upper FC, Putnam County students, and Western Litchfield County students. Probably students from Western New Haven County.
Could easily have a 2 year program that then leads to a 2 year program with West Conn. Understand that West Conn is connected with NVCC. Just would make sense as the closest colleges on good days are 30, 40, and 50 miles away.
It seems Central CT/Hartford County, SE Fairfield County, and New Haven area are the education hubs of the state. With Upper FC and rest of the counties being bare with maybe few schools trickled in. With Danbury maybe the growth wasnt seen. Do feel a school would be a good idea to progress the City.
As far as Recreation wise. Two parts NY has a greenway system that kisses the CT border near Danbury runs all the way to NYC. Why and would the state build a greenway connecting these greenways. Then why not a greenway from New Milford to Norwalk?
Also, transportation why isn't there a BRT bus from New Milford to Norwalk?
Do you think that the books are all connected? Keeping the Bridgertons at the center, there is a direct line to the Rokesbys and Smyth-Smiths. But Lady Danbury is also in "How to Marry a Marquis." Are there other connecting characters? Do you believe that all the characters are connected? How will this inform the series?
I owned a 2019 Tesla Model 3 Performance for roughly two years and 15,000 miles. I'm going to distill my key learnings and experiences here, in an attempt to educate others on EVs and reach some form of closure. My ownership could best be summed-up as a love/hate relationship, ending with crazy used car values offering me the out I'd been quietly seeking. Clearly, I decided EVs aren't for me - at least, not yet. I'm not a "paid big oil shill" or someone who's trying to short the stock, as I'm sure some of the Tesla nuts will claim. I'm just a car enthusiast (disclaimer: not an engineer) standing at the same crossroads as the rest of you, wondering what sounds future children will make long after (if?) our beloved bureaucrats outlaw the ICE.
Everything I'm writing here is based on my own unique tastes and preferences. How the pros and cons balance out at the end is entirely up to you. And that's fine. Choice is great. Note that this post centers on Battery EVs (BEVs) at the time of this writing, which comprise the vast majority of EVs on the road today.
And yeah. This got way longer than I anticipated. But it was cathartic for me and I hope it's at least somewhat useful to someone out there.
I'll start with what ultimately sold me on the car - Immense, instant power. The war in the "pure acceleration" category is pretty much over - just take a look at Jason Cammisa's video with the Model S Plaid vs. the BMW M5 CS and Cadillac Crazy. They're not even on the same planet. Not only is the acceleration brutal, but it's consistent (everything else held constant - more on that later). Look up any number of 0 - 60 videos on YouTube, and you'll notice that the times are all remarkably close, especially if there are multiple runs in the same video.
And how could they not be? Software and traction control are fundamental to EV operation. Adjustments take mere milliseconds. The amount of "stuff" involved between your right foot and the tires is a joke compared to an ICE car. And it's basically idiot-proof - even with the Track Mode dialed to 100% hoon in my TM3P, it was nearly impossible to make a mistake. You just put your foot down and the car takes care of the rest, with literally zero drama.
And all of this performance comes with no mechanical sympathy. I never felt an ounce of it, flogging my Model 3 - there's really nothing to "break" mechanically in the way of the drivetrain. The ent

TL;DR if you haven't registered yet you still can conditionally register and vote in Yolo County at a few locations in Davis including the MU. If you haven't turned in a ballot yet, you would need to mail it or drop it off at a vote center or ballot box, including at the MU, by or on Tuesday.
Voting in the Gubernatorial recall election will culminate this Tuesday, the 14th! I've compiled some information on Yolo County-specific voting; much of this info concerning mailing ballots especially will hold true for other counties, but you will need to verify with your own local elections office.
Per the CA Secretary of State Website, here is what is on the ballot:
> The recall ballot will ask two questions: 1) do you want to recall Governor Newsom? and 2) If the governor is recalled, who do you want to replace him?
>
>If 50% or more vote NO, the governor would remain in office.
>
>If more than 50% vote YES, the governor would be removed from office and the person with the most votes would replace him.
If you have not registered yet, you can still vote through the conditional voter registration process up through Election Day. The Yolo Elections Office has prepared this website to explain the process. (You must go to their office or a Voter Assistance Center to fill out the form):
https://www.yoloelections.org/voter-registration/conditional-voter-registration
Voter Assistance Centers in Davis (from Yolo website)
Early voting is happening at these centers from 10 AM - 6PM Sunday and Monday, and they will be open 7 AM - 8 PM on Tuesday. The county has a map with wait times: https://www.livevoterturnout.com/YoloCA_SEP2021/Vote%20Center%20Wait%20Times.html
If you have already registered and filled out a ballot, it must be postmarked or returned on or before the 14th. If mailed, the county office needs to receive it by the 21st, and if in-person it needs to be returned to the elections office, a voting locatio

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
Last night I was held at gunpoint, over a fucking $20 bill. Ive had my window smashed out, twice, in the past 6 weeks, for nothing, in a fucking parking garage mind you. And about 3 months ago, a vagrant drug addict took a 2x4 to my entire (brand new) car for no reason as well.
Over $3k in repairs and when I called the police, like usual, they tell me to file a report online.
My lease is up in May and I am fucking OUT. I am done acting like itβs a solvable problem. Iβm done waiting for proper leadership. Iβm done forking over thousands of dollars so crackheads can have fun in the night.
Yet Iβm the asshole for not using the proper term for a homeless person. Laughable bullshit.
Edit: The amount of comments berating me or laughing about my situation really surprise me. Not what Iβd expect from such loving citizens of the most progressive city in America. Though these things have happened to me, I do absolutely love it here. My friend group is the most solid itβs ever been, my job is amazing and treats me well, and I love the food and nightlife of this city, I just do not feel safe living here anymore, and Iβm sorry if that upsets you or somehow doesnβt align with your views. I understand that any city has its problems, but if you truly believe that the problems here are universal, you are sadly mistaken. Be safe.
Edit 2: RIP my inbox. For the numerous people asking.
My apartment and parking structure are close to the Lloyd center. Yes I am aware that there is more crime around there at night.
I was held at gunpoint on the corner of 12th Ave and NE Irving street, just before the bridge. It was a few guys in a car, but was only assaulted by one.
To those asking to see pictures or proof, I owe you nothing. Iβve been more than descriptive about the incidents over numerous comments and have zero desire to reveal my identity.
It really does, I swear!

TL;DR: Steven Donziger sued Chevron on behalf of Amazonians who had their land and lives destroyed. Won $18 Billion. Chevron not only refused to pay, they have made it their personal project to take his life apart piece by piece and has succeeded. Now they're using a civil RICO lawsuit to go after him to try to put a nail in the coffin for him and for anyone who would dare to try and hold them to account.
Chevron sent environmental attorney Steven Donziger to prison, in the whatβs being called the first-ever case of corporate prosecution.
Chevron had Donziger disbarred, froze his bank accounts, slapped him with mil
