1975 was the year of Sholay, one of the biggest blockbusters of all time which made Dharmendra and Amitabh the most loved buddies on screen. Amitabh was crowned the next superstar with 4 blockbusters and 2 hit movies while Garam Dharam had 3 blockbusters that year. A few month’s before the duo set the box office on fire with Sholay, they had already quietly established themselves as a fun duo with Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s masterpiece “Chupke Chupke”.

Chupke Chupke was a movie which Hrishida adapted from Bengali movie "Chhadmabeshi" for Dharampaaji and Asha Parekh with a couple of newcomers. However, Amitabh and Jaya fresh off their production of Abhimaan with Hrishida urged the maestro to cast them in the small roles for free so that they could be part of this venture. Dharmendra also wanted Sharmila as his leading lady because of their successful history and also managed to convince Hrishida to do so. A furious Asha Parekh would never forgive Hrishida for replacing her in the movie and they would never work together again.
The movie was such a beloved masterpiece that in 1980 Doordarshan successfully broadcast Chupke Chupke during a solar eclipse in the day, so that people would stay inside and not venture out. DD repeated the trick a few times during subsequent eclipses. The movie is one of the funniest, most light hearted, feel good movies of all time.
Dharam plays a Botany Professor named Parimal Tripathi who falls in love with Sharmila’s Sulekha. Her brother in law Raghavendra brilliantly played by Om Prakash is an intellectual who Sulekha is always praising. Since Raghavendra and his wife were not able to attend their wedding, they invite them for vacation at their house in their city. So Big B would team up yet again with his favorite director Hrishida not once but twice in '75 with his wife Jaya to make 2 loving masterpieces, still adored by the public. Hrishida’s beloved Dada Burman would once again but sadly for the last time color his movies with the life of his music. Born a real Prince to the Royal Prince of Tripura and Royal Princess of Manipur, Sachin Dev Burman would be responsible for the musical education and entertainment of the nation. 30 minutes of pure musical heaven in 7 songs split between the 2 movies. I remember playing the LP with the combined soundtracks of both movies so many times that my memory of these songs includes a layer of the scratchy sound of the record. So I will review the twin soundtracks of these masterpieces together.

The movie soundtrack is short and iconic with 4 musical gems. Mukesh, Rafi, Kishore and Lata would all rush in to record for Dada Burman as if they knew that the end was near. “Chal Shurru Ho Jaa” says Rafi to panting Kishore as the album opens with the only battle of music giants Rafi and Kishore in music history as they poke fun and outdo each other with their amazing vocals. So who is the winner - Rafi or Kishore? Nope, It's the fans enjoying every second of this Battle Royale. This is Rafi’s final song for his men

I was always familiar with the songs from these movies but never actually saw the films till recently from Amazon Prime. I was surprised at how interesting the story and characters were from Dil Kya Kare. The climax left me conflicted about how to feel but that kind of made me enjoy the movie more. Loved the performances by Kajol and especially Mahima. CCCC was another one that had a really unique storyline, great music and great cast.
Can anyone recommend similar movies from the 90s/early 2000s? The ones I seem to like the most are the marital dramas with sensitive storyline and emotions where they focus on the relationship dynamics. Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam is another one I liked, I'm hoping to find similar ones I haven't seen!
