... keep reading on reddit β‘Anyone remotely familiar with modern wrestling or even just watch reviews of it knows the surprise roll up is so overused now that is earns it's nickname of "the most devastating move in sports entertainment" as it tends to be the more normal way to end a match.
WWE is number 1 most guilty of this, but even AEW is guilty of this occasionally, especially in the women's division. Now I know the intent is to come off like someone managed to "steal" a victory, and the one who got pinned still looks strong. However not only is this such a dull ending, while some may argue one who lost might still look "strong", they however do look like a complete idiot. As often the move is used when a opponent is distracted for whatever reason, stares off into space for like 15 seconds only to forget how to get out of a roll out and lose for the 1-2-3.
However Chris Sabin from Impact Wrestling is the only one who I find does the surprise roll up and I feel satisfied about it mainly because he combos up a surprise roll up. This is often his more common way to end matches against bigger and heavier opponents where it's trickier to pull off his finisher against. Against them, he uses a move that normally won't get a 3 count on it's own, but because he immediately follows it up with a roll up, it's becomes more plausible.
Like how in one match he does a spinning DDT off the ropes, but rather than releasing after his opponent comes crashing down, he grabs the legs to perform a roll up. Or how he beat Rhino by dropping kicking him in the leg then quickly followed it up with the surprise roll. This style of surprise roll up I'm a bit more satisfied about.
The only other times was the recent Becky Lynch vs Bianca where Becky exposes a turnpost before throwing Bianca into it before the rollup because atleast there she did some offence first. Other time was Rhea Ripley pinning Charlotte in a triple threat at Charlotte after she applied the figure 8. This one I applaud because it was creative and showed Charlotte's finisher ironically screwed her over because her legs were locked in and she can't get out.
Outside these examples, it's usually either the opponent stares off into space for half a minute until they get the surprise roll up or someone counters a move into a roll up. This just gets really dull.
Is Chris Sabin the only wrestling who often combos up the surprise roll up with another move before pinning someone? This is probably why Impact is my favourite wrestling sh
