A list of puns related to "Cartoon Saloon"
i ask this question because when i watched song of the sea for the first time about a year ago as well as the breadwinner, i noticed that both films started with the universal logo. but when i tried to look up to see if universal owns cartoon saloon, i couldn't find anything at all and the secret of kells didn't start with the universal logo and i have not seen wolfwalkers just yet so i have no idea if that one also starts with a universal logo. So yeah i don't know, what do you guys think?
Is there a DVD format box set or can I play the discs in a DVD player? I see the box set has a blue-ray edition, but I personally prefer DVD since only one tv in our house plays blue-ray and it's easier to lend to people since most people I know have only a DVD player.
Wolfwalkers was released during a time when most theaters were closed, and its only other release to date is via Apple TV. On 12/14 GKIDS will release the only planned physical release, a limited edition box set with Cartoon Saloon's two other movies, The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea.
I know these movies are well loved here, so I figured it was worth spreading the word. If you want this movie on anyone's terms but Apple's, this is your chance.
I would appreciate if you all checked out the video

The Irish animation studio may not have the lengthy filmography and history that Disney has, but after finishing the final film they've done, Wolfwalkers, I was just utterly astounded at the beauty and power they consistently put out. I don't know they do it. Every film they make is so rich and beautiful and emotionally powerful, it's just incredible. Every frame of their movies is so intricate and detailed, I sometimes pause the movie just to admire the artistry of them. But the voice acting, the emotional depth, the magic and wonder is at least on par, usually superior, to anything I've seen from Disney.
Disney is kind of more aimed at children, which is fine, but Cartoon Saloon is what I would call truly "all ages". They often deal with really dark, tragic, and mature themes. But of course hope and beauty always wins out in the end.
Anyway I think it's a tragedy that more people aren't familiar with this studio and their films so I thought I would make this post. I strongly urge you guys to try one of their films, but if I had to choose just one to recommend I would say Wolfwalkers.
The works of cartoon saloon are some of my favorite movies, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for things that feel similar in theme/subject? I really love Irish and Scottish folk tales and I love the unapologetic authenticity that these movies have, as well as how magical they feel without necessarily becoming campy? Appreciate any suggestions!
Iβm of the mind that the LOTR movies are already perfect, but if a remake were to ever happen in the future, it should be an animated movie. And what better studio to take on that role than Cartoon Saloon?
For those not in the know, Cartoon Saloon is an Irish animation studio based in Kilkenny, Ireland. Founded in 1999, it already has an impressive catalogue of movies and short films, mostly based around Irish and Celtic mythology/folklore. Some of their best include The Secret of Kells, The Song of the Sea, and Wolfwalkers. They are also one of the few animation studios today that work in 2D animation for feature films, preserving traditional styles while incorporating their own signature touches.
The Hobbit and LOTR franchises already have a storied history of animation, as seen in the Rankin/Bass and Ralph Bakshi adaptations from the 70s. A new animated movie in the series would honor that tradition, as well as re-introduce the stories to new generations.
The Hobbit would probably most benefit from this treatment, seeing as it is closest to a children story and classic fairy tale, which is Cartoon Saloonβs bread and butter. It would also be a chance to correct some of the mistakes from the movie trilogy; no over-stuffed plot, unnecessary characters, forced romances etc.
Just imagine what Middle Earth would look like through the lenses of Cartoon Saloonβs creators. Iconic scenes and locales like the Mines of Moria, Minas Tirith, the Cracks of Doom and others all rendered with exquisite lighting, perspective, and detail that made Wolfwalkers a masterpiece.
The various races and cultures of Middle Earth would lend themselves perfectly to unique, book accurate character designs, especially if they are reminiscent to Medieval European styles that Cartoon Saloonβs known for tributing: the Men would be weary and rugged; the Elves tall and slender; Dwarves stocky and broad; Orcs grotesque and hunched; Hobbits short and soft; the Wraiths dark and ethereal.
To stand apart from the live action movies, these animated movies could include details from the books that were altered or otherwise left out (Tom Bombadill, anyone?). It would even be cool if some of the original cast were to reprise their respective roles in the voice cast!
Like I said, the live-action movies are already the franchise at its best, but I still think there is untouched potential in animation that could realize Middle Earth that much more, and Cartoon Saloon would be the best ones to

No details on their website but they have been nominated for an Oscar and I'd love to introduce the my class to Irish made animators. We have already watched Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea and I really want to show them that Irish studios are producing insanely great animation too. The Irish version of Disney or Ghibli as far as I'm concerned.
This year was a great chance for Cartoon Saloon and Tomm Moore to finally win an Oscar for "The best animated film". I really thought they were going to get it because there wasn't even any competition - there were no loud releases. And it was like that until the "Soul" came out. I'm not an enemy of Pixar it something but it's so dumb, don't you think? Pixar makes 1 or 2 films every year though Cartoon Saloon do one on 6 or 7 years. 2D animation hadn't won since "Spirited away" by Hayao Miadzaki. And I'm just super frustrated because I was really expecting Wolfwalkers to win the Oscar this year. Freaking Mickey Mouse stole almost every single statuette and decided to do it again this year. It's quite obvious that Soul will win - Pixar is a famous studio, they got whole Disney throwing money at them. But the most that can get a small irish studio hardly working and presenting masterpieces once in 6 or 7 years is a goddamn nomination that doesn't really mean anything. I'm really sorry for Cartoon Saloon.
Iβm sure graphic novels may be more suited to what Iβm looking for, but Iβm wondering if anyone has any novels in mind that evoke this type of intimate mythology (Irish would be cool, too)?
Note: Iβve read (and loved) Madeline Millerβs books (Circe, etc.).
I've been really curious about this for a while. I watched and rewatched their works for many years and their stuff is absolutely amazing! I enjoyed it back in the day when I was just a teenager, and I enjoy it all the same now that I am well into my adulthood and have a kid of my own. And yet the studio remains fairly unknown and e.g. the box office from the recent release is microscopic compared to some yet another recycled princess story from Disney. Don't get me wrong, I watch and enjoy those too but they are not nearly comparable in my opinion. Why do Cartoon Saloon works keep winning awards, get amazing reviews, yet this does not appear to be reflected on their bottom line?
I knew the studio had released some very highly acclaimed animated films, but for no particular reason I kept postponing it when it came to actually watching any of them. Recently, I read a critique of Wolfwalkers that caught my attention, and I decided to amend my mistake.
I can honestly say not watching these movies earlier has been, so far, my biggest mistake as a film enthusiast. I watched all four in quick succession, and I loved all of them to some degree. Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers have definitely become two of my favourite animated films ever, and I strongly encourage everyone else to check out The Secret of Kells and The Breadwinner as well.
> A young boy in a remote medieval outpost under siege from barbarian raids is beckoned to adventure when a celebrated master illuminator arrives with an ancient book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers.
This film is positively gorgeous, it pioneers an amazing and unique art style that would only get even better with the subsequent movies. It's the first movie in Tomm Moore's trilogy about Irish lore, and as such it's filled with wonder and mystique, with a mysterious and captivating plot that feels like part of an old legend. It's hard to come across animated films that are so unique and yet have so much style.
> Ben, a young Irish boy, and his little sister Saoirse, a girl who can turn into a seal, go on an adventure to free the fairies and save the spirit world.
This film is, in my opinion, the closest thing to Studio Ghibli that there is outside of Japan, and yet it stands completely on its own ground. It keeps, in part, the aesthetics and mythology of The Secret of Kells, but it tells a completely different story focused as much on family as it is on magic and spirituality.
> In 2001, Afghanistan is under the control of the Taliban. When her father is captured, a determined young girl disguises herself as a boy in order to provide for her family.
The first full Cartoon Saloon feature not directed by Tomm Moore, as far as I know, and you can really tell. That's a good thing, though! It keeps the wonderful 2D animation, but it tells a completely different kind of story. As much as I love the Irish lore presented in Moore's trilogy, I'm glad t
