Butterfly 3000 Puns

Holy fucking shit, what an amazing experience. Shanghai, Yours, Interior People, Dreams, and fucking especially Catching Smoke. I had to figure out the names of all the songs after the trip because they all blended into one another. I literally never listen to new music, I’m normally 7-10 years behind the times. I’m so happy Spotify chose to randomly show me this band after I played a Hendrix song.

So far I’ve only otherwise listened to Oddments while on that trip as well, and I’m trying to listen to Nonagon Infinity right now, but music in general just ain’t the same if you’re not tripping.

I don’t think I’m going to be able to listen to anything else on my psychonautical adventures!

Edit: Figured I should mention the song that played that drew me in, Work This Time. I was about to skip when I heard the drum roll but then the song melted and so did I. I threw on the first album listed after the song was over and put my phone down at that point because life was getting pretty intense. Just sat on a fence post and spent most of the time with my eyes closed.

Mine is a tie with Catching Smoke, Black hot soup and Ya Love 😵‍💫

So new fan here, not sure if this is something you guys know about but I got a either a mess up version or a bootleg copy of Butterfly 3000.

So backstory here is that as a newer fan, I've only just begun to actually start buying the albums on Vinyl. No real strategy or plan on buying, just grabbing what I can so far. So as we all know, Gizzverse is currently sold out on BF3K, my local shops didn't have any, and I don't want to support Amazon by buying from them so I was out of luck until recently. So while walking around my block I spotted a garage sale sign that had listed vinyl records as a selling point. I figured it would be old stuff no one wants but decided to check it out regardless because why not? So I get there and it's located at a house I never seen before. Not like I never had been in the neighborhood, more like the house never existed where it was until today. Anyways so I was checking the garage sale out and seen some cool stuff but it all seemed weird in a way. Like there was a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for the N64 but it had no label, just the name written on the cartridge. Also there were a lot of home recorded VHS tapes of shows for sale. Stuff like Spongebob for instance. So I make my way over to the milk crates of records the guy has to check it out and while I was flipping through all the stuff I expected to be in there like Christmas albums and records from the 50's I came across a surprise I never would have expected in a hundred years. A new copy of Butterfly 3000 still in the paper wrap!

So in my excitement over finding not just a King Gizzard album on vinyl, but the newest one in perfect condition caused me to overlook one important detail. The label on the brown paper sleeve. I didn't notice until much later that it wasn't in English... Or German, French, Japanese, or any of the other ones. Instead it was in an almost indescribable language I didn't recognize. It was like a mix of Japanese and Arabic symbols mashed together. This was the case all over the packaging so I figure it must have been a weird bootleg or something. Also weird is that the guy selling it only wanted $1 for it. I of course didn't question it and thought that maybe he just didn't know what he had so I bought it without much thought thinking that ar worst if it didn't play or was something else I'm only out a dollar.

So I get home and... Didn't get around to listening to it for a few days. Work and life and all that got in the way. But

With a new album announcement coming very soon, I’m assuming pretty quickly after the music video for Butterfly 3000, I just wanted to look back on this album and what it’s been like. This was such a fun, wild and unique album that only King Gizzard could have made. It’s so fresh and new in a world where all modern rock bands are making the same sorta stuff. Each track was such a great listen and so different from anything they’d done before, but that classic gizz style was still there. I’m not entirely sure what my point is but I guess I’m just trying to say thanks to all the guys for putting out such a wild album. Onto the next one!

I’ve been a fan of giz for almost 2 years at this point and adore anything they put out, but B3k doesn’t make any sense to me. Its hard to listen to, let alone enjoy. Am I doing it wrong or is it a letdown?

Absolutely beautiful, perfect message to Stu’s daughter and honestly feels like the Gizzard ethos. A top 10 KGLW song that nobody EVER talks about.

I love the aesthetic of Butterfly 3000 and it feels like it would be a shame if we skipped over it and went straight to the next album. I don't know how difficult it is to change or anything, but if the mods or anyone wanted to whip one up it would be great!

Also does anyone have screen caps of the sub during previous album eras? Post them for the flashback!

Sounds cheesy but in this simple, unpretentious and sort of all-encompassing way, those lyrics encapture exactly what true love is I think. Paired with the atmospheric and ascending vibe of the song... almost made me tear up in the shower this morning 😅

I haven’t seen a lot of posts on how Butterfly 3000 relates to the Gizzverse, so this is what I think. Let me know if other people have posted similar thoughts or if this is not new.

Butterfly connects to the Gizzverse through "Murder of the Universe" specifically, the part before Digital Black in which all of humanity uploads themselves to a computer. They are in a dream like state, hence the dreamlike quality of the album and the constant mentioning of dreams. Each song has a specific meaning that ties into the album's narrative and placement within the Gizzverse.

Yours - Humanity gives themselves up to the computer stating that are "Yours" to the machine world, beginning the process.

Shanghai - Talks about the transition from being human to being a computer. The evolution of a butterfly is a metaphor to this and a metaphor of the entire album. Shanghai represents the old life before the transition takes place, hence "Bye-bye Shanghai I become a butterfly born again overnight."

Dreams - Talks about the dream like state of this dream world. Its scary to them hence "I only wanna run and hide."

Blue Morpho - Humanity is falling deeper into this dreamlike computer world. Its getting scary for them and they want out, but they keep getting sucked deeper.

Interior people - The humans sees the people who are already there living in this dream world and they have to embrace the "interior people" and assimilate into this new life. The interior people become part of the humans in this computer like world.

Catching smoke - Now that the rest of the humans are assimilated with the people there, they can have fun. But this fun is only temporary, hence "ephemeral" which means "lasting for a very short time."

2.02 Killer Year - Its about the imminent danger of the digital black. It uses a metaphor for rising sea levels to illustrate this.

Black Hot Soup - The digital black is almost here and it begins to engulf people. They become delusional being completely out of their bodies.

Ya Love - Humanity has lost all grips on reality and becomes entranced in the digital black. Hence the constant repetition of "Ya Love."

Butterfly 3000 - The metamorphosis is complete and it is an overview of what humanity has gone through.

Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg, there is so much more to this album than meets the eye.

I say this with ultimate sadness , Eliminated in round 8 was Shanghai at 138 votes , 39.09% of the vote , losing by a margin of only 13 votes- it put up a hell of a fight.

/s - I never thought would say this, but you monsters voted out the actual song of our people, Shanghai. It is actually a fact that when you listen to this at night alone and dance, that everyone in the entire world is doing the exact same in there home in unison, and the world stops turning. /s

But in all serious, this song does exactly what Lucas said in Gizzymail, it has faith in sparseness- and it’s so effective. The melody is so perfect and beautiful and carries so much weight paired with the minimalistic light upright bass sound, Stu’s lovely vocals and piano chords, that by the time Ambrose’s falsetto verses come in it’s overwhelmingly a highlight of the album. What seriously dreamy, psychedelic, perfect little tune.

It’s personally my 5th favorite gizzard song to date and my favorite chill Gizz tune, so I hope your happy. Long live Shanghai, I’ve become a butterfly 🦋 —————————————————————————— FINAL ROUND

A eulogy for Black Hot Soup—————————————————————————— It’s fair to say Black Hot Soup is the most classic Gizz type track on BF3K, light on the synth - with acoustic and falsetto touches of Paper Mache, rhythmic fun of Poly, and in the end - apocalyptic fuzz of Murder of the universe . “Infinity is in a dream inside a dream- you can achieve reality” is a lyric that is enough to make the gizzverse do a backflip. Ambrose lends some classic (and fun) Hot Wax type falsetto backing vocals for a razzle dazzle, and yes…there are atrociously awesome WOOOooo’s at play. One last WOO! for the beloved Black Hot Soup, as we enter the final 4 ! (Cries in woo!) ————————————————————

A eulogy for Dreams - ————————————————————————— Dreams is a lovely third track on BF3K that keeps up the summer-y, jubilant and transportive vibe that is clear from the start. A lovely chipper synth loop hooks you in and when the song starts with full instrumentation- it definitely feels like your floating to the castle in the air! It features some lush vocal moments and some great double drums from cavs. It doubles as a “quarantine song” as stu said- And as an important stage in the “metamorphosis” theme of the record. The lick of the Blue Morpho synth motif in the middle is a brilliant way to sum up the cycle of change. A eulogy for Yours———————————————————— I think we all remember the moment well when we had no prior listen to anything BF3K, and the joyful synth loop of “Yours” slowly faded into our headphones/ speakers followed by the motorik beat that launched Butterfly 3000. Ethereal, playful blissful , and filled with firecracker snare rolls - this song is a total JAM. The way the instrumentals’ rhythms wrap around different moments in the synth loop throughout the song is something to behold in itself and it’s lushness is utterly divine. From a “dream god” perspective as Stu mentions, the vibraphone-paired lyrics even have nods to later songs (your friend in your mind= Interior People/ your dream in a dream = Black Hot Soup 😉 ) At this point it feels sacrilege to vote out such a gorgeous tune but on to the top three we go! Long live the very beautiful rush that is “Yours”.

A eulogy for Ya Love —————————————————————————— Ya Love is a colorful, masterful and wonky adventure on this record that is the sonic equivalent to the garden-like-kaleidoscope style album cover. Cookie Dawg’s musical mystery tour has one of the most busy, masterful and strong bassline’s in the bands discography and the opening section before it takes off feels quite like you are arriving at heaven’s gates. Personal touches from Stu make this (and the finale track) extra special and different from Gizz’s entire catalog, and together , they close the metamorphosis and life cycle theme of the record beautifully.
