The maiden launch/landing of Buran/Energia. This remarkable rocket had a capacity of 110 tons, boosted the Buran into orbit, which then returned without incident. 100% successful on the first try. Buran was the first reusable spacecraft to launch/land successfully without a crew. 1988. youtube.com/watch?v=q99Q2…

TIL of the Buran programme, a Soviet response to the Space Shuttle program. The reusable spacecraft had one unmanned flight in 1988 before the collapse of the USSR. Despite external similarities, the internal and functional designs were distinct. It was destroyed in a hangar collapse in 2002. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bur…

Prolog used in AI system for Buran spacecraft(1988)

According to wikipedia and this CIA document(page 14): http://www.foia.cia.gov/sites/default/files/document_conversions/89801/DOC_0000498691.pdf

the Russians used Prolog to "enhance mission control fault-tolerance". How do you think such a program works (is designed)? It seems that there are two components to this: a knowledge base and an inference engine. This is obvious that it suits Prolog quite well, however how does one go about to make something that's reliable enough to be used in an actual mission? Anyone care to share their ideas on how such an "expert system" is created?
