A list of puns related to "Billie Jean Horton"
I'll start
Listening to Thriller through for the first time (I know), and it's crazy. Three era defining tracks after another. Can't think of anything that matches up. Maybe the start of Katy Perry's Teenage Dream? Teenage Dream - TGIF - California Gurls - Firework. But I dunno. I'd love to hear more. What's the best consecutive song stretch of an artist's career?
Afternoon all. I'm looking for some feedback on my mix of Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. As a rock and metal guy it's outside my usual sort of style, but I'm always trying to boost my skills by mixing different stuff and, well, it's Michael bloody Jackson. By all means be as brutal as you want - I'm almost 2 years into mixing and still have a long way to go so I need to learn.
I've also linked to my master but realistically it's just a louder, ruined version of the mix. A mastering engineer I am not. Give it a listen if you like (or dare).
Some notes on the track:
Arrangement, arrangement, arrangement. Billie Jean only really has 3 distinct musical ideas. Everything else is riffing off these 3 rock-solid and musically interesting themes to create layer upon layer of ecoutrements that add the spice and sizzle to the track. These layers are beautifully crafted to build the whole thing to a crescendo for the final chorus, with previous choruses acting as a sort of amuse-bouche for the final event. Some modern metal bands would do well to study this sort of track - a small number of really excellent musical ideas arranged into a relatively simple but interesting song, with layer upon layer of fun stuff sprinkled around to keep the listener guessing. Not bombarding your listener with 20 different things going on, each trying to out-heavy the last.
A great performance of a great song. Michael Jackson, unsurprisingly, gives an unreal performance. The energy and emotion that he brings to the track brings it to life. You can almost hear him dancing and grooving along (well actually in parts you can actually hear him dancing and snapping his fingers). It's infectious. It's imperfect. Those big draws of breath before he belts out some of the prechorus lines. Without it you'd have a sterile pop song.
A great recording needs very little mixing. I'll be completely honest - this recording isn't even that clean. You can very clearly hear the backing track through MJ's (and some of the session musicians') headphones even before adding compression. The "singing through a cardboard tube" thing they did for the "do think twice" bit didn't work for me at all - it ended up sounding like an artefact. Even then, mixing this whole track felt like cheating. I moved some faders aro
