Hello and welcome back to: What does it take for them to be good? Today I'll be analysing one of FE's classic classes, the thief class. Now, thieves aren't meant to be a combat class unlike the previous classes we've covered and are instead meant to be more of a utility class. But how well does said utility serve them? Now, Fire Emblem games are usually easy enough to allow you to use anyone you like, but when discussing what the best classes are we need to look at who makes the game the easyest and why that is. So in this post I'll be analyzing the thief, rogue, whisper, assasin and outlaw classes to see why they work or don't work in certain FE games and what can be done to improve them in the future. This analysis assumes the hardest difficulties, no grinding and fast play.

Analyzing their viability through the games

FE1

• This isn't their best outing. The main flaw Julian and Rickard face is their low bases and the prevalenece of alternate ways of accomplishing their role of opening chests and doors through the use of keys and Marth's Fire Emblem. While both Julian and Rickard have nice growths they suffer from their low weapon level and 0% growth in said area which allows them to only use iron, steel and devil weaponry. They can be deployed to raid some chests on more maps where Marth has better things to do than open chests, but aside from that they are a fairly mediocre class here

FE2

• Kaga confirms that thieves were indeed a mistake by not being in Gaiden

FE3

• A bit better for them as dismounting is in this game and the 7 movement thieves have is quite valuable. Julian also joins with better bases and actual weapon level growth which puts him only 3 point behind a silver sword, so he can contribute somewhat as a combat unit in book 2. However, door keys are still buyable and Marh can still open chests, so while a bit better, they are still a somewhat mediocre class here. Also they still can't promote

FE4

• So this is kinda interesting. So, Dew, Patty and Daisy are kinda meh combat wise and have trouble keeping up with your mounted units in the huge maps of FE4,

Lurker here, who's been in retail for over 10 years. This is a bit of a PSA. Well dressed guy comes into the shop with a suit garment bag folded over his arm. There's a hanger at the top like there's a suit inside, but it doesn't look like there's more than a shirt in it. He holds the zippered side close to him as he looks around, I had a feeling he was stealing, so I watch him and chat him up. When I turn my back to help another customer, he makes his move and I just miss it. Frustrated, I try to get a better look at the bag, and as he walks past I notice the tags of the pair of shoes he just dropped into the open zipper of the garment bag are caught in the zipper! So I tell hey the tags got stuck! He says sorry they "fell in". He gives them back and he tries to continue shopping, like we're going to pretend his story is true. I calmly tell him he needs to leave or I'm calling the cops. He thanks me for "being a gentleman" and leaves. Good idea though, dress up and drop everything into a garment bag. He would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for those meddling tags.

I was thinking about making a character to play at convention games when those start happening again, and I came across the idea of playing a firbolg thief rogue, which I think would be a lot of fun!

however, the thief subclass has a lot of focus on sneakyness and infiltration, and I am afraid that most convention games won't have time for that type of stuff.

What do you think? Does the thief work in adventurer's league oneshots (especially convention ones)? Would I be better off with a different subclass?
