Hello! First post on this sub so sorry if I'm doing something incorrectly...

Honestly, I've thought about trying this out for myself one day, if only casually with friends, but I wondered what generally people think of Babiniku VTubers (males behind female avatars)? For a long while, I've been tinkering with a few voice changers, but since I can't seem to sing through many of them, I've considered simply using my natural voice, though if possible I'd like to mask it if I can.

I know there exists successful versions of both. Tomari Mari has a fairly large following with a pretty convincing voice changer(note), and I've seen a few other highly entertaining Vtubers for me that make no attempt to hide their clearly male voice with their clearly female avatar. But I wonder if this is the norm or if they're exceptions to generally not being as well-liked.

I've also heard that perhaps some parts of the community actively dislike babiniku. The only real reports of this I know is one I've seen in this subreddit some time ago who was being harassed by some viewers, and a statement from a buddy on discord where they've observed some babiniku receiving hateful messages.

All-in-all, I just wanna get a better feel on how people think of them while I prepare to maybe become one myself.

Note: Does he still use Koigoe? I've been told that has an issue of not working long-term, needs to be reset fairly often (every 15 minutes or hour or something), but that's the voice changer I've tried that I could tune to actually be able to sing through effectively. I've since used a different voice changer that seems to work better at transforming my voice, but makes it so my voice is wildly off-tune if I ever try to sing through it. I know this is a tangent, probably for a different discussion, thus why it's separate from the main topic, haha.

This is in relation to another thread I started asking about Babiniku VTubers, though for this I more specifically wanted more information about the voice changers some of them use.

As I am somewhat shy and am not particularly fond of my own voice, I really wanted to use a voice changer for when I start streaming. The snag I've run into is that I'd like, if possible, to have one that also allows me to sing through it. I quite enjoy singing and one of my goals as an eventual Vtuber is related to singing.

I've tried two so far, and currently testing a third: Koigoe, RoVee, and testing Gachikoi Core.

• RoVee was fairly simple to use and more effective at changing my voice to be more feminine than the other options, it seems, but I can't figure out a way to tune it where when I sing through it, it's not wildly off-tune.

• With Koigoe, I was able to find a balance that seemed to be mostly accurate when I sing through it, but it definitely gives signs that it's artificial no matter how much I tinker with it (though maybe there's things I'm not taking into account that would help me clean up the audio, especially since a certain VTuber I like that uses Koigoe seems to sound much more natural using it). Also, I've been told that it has problems with long-term use, requiring it to be reset every 15 minutes or so.

• GachikoeCore seems very similar to Koigoe so far, but with seemingly a cleaner interface and possibly more stable to use long-term (though I haven't tested this out yet).

Were there any other programs anyone would suggest?

Also, and maybe this is for a different thread, but, how would I utilize these programs more effectively? As I mentioned, I know Tomari Mari uses Koigoe and his audio always seems very clean. I've also encountered a babiniku Vtuber who sang a beautiful cover a song through a voice changer, seemingly without any signs of it audible.

Finally, while I could run RoVee quite easily through OBS, since it's a VST plugin, how would I get my transformed audio into OBS through Koigoe or Gachikoe? I'm not very tech-savvy xP It doesn't seem to be as simple as RoVee in that I'm able to just create an Audio Input source with some filters.

However, I think there are many people who feel disgusted by the fact that I have a male voice and a female appearance.

Even so, there are people who accept me, which is why I am able to exist as a Vtuber.

I asked overseas viewers, but it seems that there are many people who do not know the genre of Vtuber's Babiniku.

Especially that a man plays a beautiful girl Vtuber using a voice changer. Known as "Babiniku ojisan".Lol

This topic... a very odd one wanted to see.

First: I don't have a condescending pre-suppositions.

Second: I do think that authenticty is a major factor (at least for me) in the "portraying a persona" game of the Vtuber world. In fact, it would argue it's one of the reasons that Risu and some japanese Hololive Vtubers have been object of popularity and 'praise' on that matter. Not only with male/female characters, but with anything similar. For example: Someone who acts like Goku when they actually are extremely different and unrelatable to Goku. The person is deceiving itself and the viewers on equal terms. Not judging the enjoyer here, ppl enjoy what they enjoy that's cool.

With that said, there was this dude who went in 2017 as a cat girl avatar with his genuine voice, and well, it was cool like, he truly didn't rly care about it nor did his fans, it was very authentic, in the sense that this person didn't need to go full Oscar prize to fish. We weren't really being lied to... the person was openly using his voice, which firmly indicates it's a man. Not lies, the dude was being really honest.

Third: But now with specifically independent Vtubers... I really am skeptical about them these days, I really don't like when dudes fake their voice and act all femenine... (unless they come out as such ngl) I'm being lied to at that moment. Like yeah, the content matters... but it matters because it's a Vtuber, I mean, their content is (no offense) very generic most of the time, but what's special is that there is a persona being played that have personalities.

-Let's not confuse "personality" with "topics they like to talk about".

For simplicity sake, personality is just the way you react, not "what you like".

For example: If I'm talking about pizza, personality is how I talk about that topic, not talking about said topic. Liking pizza has nothing to do with my personality, how I talk about it does.

With that clear, I love a good authentic dude, who is actually impersonating a dude, the dude doesn't have to hide behind a facette, he has more freedom when reacting to stuff, which is basically what takes out someone's personality. (Babiniku apples to girls using male avatars too?). Eh, spotting a dude doing a girl voice is ez these days anyway, but that's beside the point.

Another example: Melody is supossed to be impersonating an AI, but said AI is supposed to be a "female" AI if it wasn't so obvious... Ironically, Melody just doesn't have an
