Former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, 15th President of the Philippines, passed away last June 24.

I know it's pretty late considering it's been almost 2 weeks, but I thought I'd post about him and his presidency.

Noynoy was the son of democracy icons Ninoy and Cory Aquino, who both fought against the Marcos dictatorship in the 1980s. His father was assassinated in 1983 by the dictatorship and his mother became president in 1986 following the People Power Revolution that ousted Marcos.

Aquino was elected in 2010, following the death of his mother and was catapulted to the presidency amidst rampant corruption and unpopularity from his predecessor, Gloria Arroyo. Throughout his tenure, he enacted several laws such as the No Wang-Wang policy (no sirens or alarms to be used for any government official), implementing the K-12 system in the Philippine public school system, signing the Reproductive Health Law (sex ed and contraceptives) and bringing the Philippine economy to a peak that hasn't been seen since the 1970s. Aquino turned the country from the "sick man of Asia" to the "rising Tiger" with an economic growth deemed the fastest in Asia.

Aquino ran in 2010 under the "Walang kurap, walang mahirap", or "No corruption, no poverty" slogan, which he successfully enforced to a certain degree. Under his tenure, several government officials were found guilty of plunder and corruption, and were subsequently convicted and sentenced to jail, most notably 3 senators (Bong Revilla, Jinggoy Estrada and Juan Enrile) who were involved in the pork barrel scam, wherein these 3 senators were accused of misusing funds appropriated for national projects. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (Renato Corona) was also impeached on charges related to his failure of disclosing his SALN (statement of assets, liabilities and net worth). Former President Gloria Arroyo was also found guilty of electoral fraud and corruption charges, in connection to her rigging the 2004 presidential elections ("Hello Garci" scandal). All of these personalities did not serve prison time, and instead got their cases dismissed once Aquino stepped down. Several returned to politics such as Arroyo who was elected Speaker of the House in 2018 and Revilla who was elected Senator in 2019.

Aquino took a staunch approach against China, with a huge stand-off in 2012 between their Navies and eventually taking China to court over its claim over the South China Sea in 2016. A mon
