Memorial Day, a time to honor American service members who gave their lives fighting for their country. In the spirit of the day, let's take a look at NFL personnel, such as players and coaches, who died while serving in World War II.

According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005, 994 figures connected to the NFL served in the Second World War. Of these nearly one thousand, 23 would not make it home.

Due to the character limit, this post will only be focusing on 12 such figures, while the second half will be covered at a later time.

After starring at Chattanooga, Braidwood began his NFL career in 1930 as a member of the Portsmouth Spartans (now Detroit Lions) during their first season in the NFL. He bounced between a few teams for the next few years before returning to Tennessee to become a wrestling referee.^[1] In September 1942, he joined the Red Cross as a program director and was sent to the Pacific, where he worked in Australia and New Guinea. After a brief return home in October 1944, he went to the North Pacific a month later.^[2]

On January 8, 1945, he died of a heart attack on Biak Island at the age of 41.^[2] He was one of two Chattanooga athletes to die in service that week along with boxer and Pfc. Sammy Hershfield in Belgium.^[3] Braidwood is buried at Manila American Cemetery at what was then Fort William McKinley (now Fort Bonifacio).

Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.

First and foremost, apologies for the delay on the report. It was due to 2 major factors: pushshift.io, the API I use for the comment data, was having even more ingestion problems than usual (am currently looking into an alternative for this since this is a recurring theme and the maintainer doesn't seem to have much interest on maintaining and upgrading the Reddit side of things - pushshift also collects data from other sources) and later, my own procrastination.

Either way, here we are. May marked the end of the Euroleague with the F4 and Game 5s played at polar ends of the month. Obviously the magnitude and importance of said phases of the competition impacted the subreddit activity even though some factors downplayed it. The 20+ day gap between end of playoffs and F4 and the fact that the event had no crowd severely ampering the buzz around the event are huge contributors on the competition side of the equation. On the Reddit side of things, even though this now lies in a somewhat distant past, Reddit had a ~2 hour downtime during the defining moments of the Efes - Madrid Game 5, which not only was a great game by itself that would have gauged activtiy, but also represented the first of three deciders, hence killing the mood for the rest of the day.

So, the numbers were good but could have been better had some aspects gone in a different direction. But you guys take a look.

All these numbers are inferior to April, with the exception being the # of unique page views. Important to note that April represented the end of the regular season and the bulk of the quarter finals. On a season that was marked by a very competitive field, these 2 phases of the competition involved defining matchups between teams with big fanbases so it's not exactly a huge surprise that it surpassed May's numbers.

With regards to comments, always take the data with a pinch of salt as long as pushshift is in use. There are some temporal gaps in the data and there's nothing I can do to retroactively fill that. Whenever I deploy my own solution, hopefully it will be more representative of the real one. Here are the spammers of the month...

Keep in mind, my son is 4 years old, so everything is an original to him.

I had to work late into the evening yesterday, and he was just going to bed when I got home. I had left home for the office nearly 14 hours prior, had a long day, lots of meetings, traffic, etc.

When I walked through the door, I was exhausted, run down, and starving. My wife hugged me and asked how my day was, and I replied, "Done. It was a good day, but has got me exhausted. I just want to grab a bite and go to bed. I'm hungry."

From my son's bedroom, I hear him shout, "Hi Hungry! Nice to meet you!"

Not only did it make me laugh, but I completely forgot about how hungry and tired I was. I went to his bedroom, and we laughed together about it. It was exactly what I needed.
