Is Akismint still king? Or are there new alternatives?
Good morning folks.
I've been getting more and more complaints about spam getting through our email filters, and wanted to poll you guys to find out what you've found to be the most effective antispam techniques on the server side.
Two years ago we implemented greylisting and it's been a GREAT success. However, I can tell that a LOT more spammers are using well behaved mailers and retrying the emails after my timeout period.
Here's my current setup: Debian Linux running OldStable (5.0.9) Exim 4 SpamAssasin (With minimal customization) ClamAV
All connections are run through an ACL that immediately drops connections based on certain high risk RBLs.
Then, if any of the following conditions are met, the email is greylisted. They appear in a large list of lower risk RBLs Their IP doesn't resolve to a common TLD (com, net, org, gov, edu, mil, us) Reverse DNS isn't set up properly Their IP is not a US IP address
The email is then checked for viruses via Clam, checked for certain words in the subject, checked for a couple other miscellaneous conditions and blocked if conditions are met.
The email is then shipped off to SA to be spam scanned and tagged if it's spammy enough.
Finally it's considered a "real" email and delivery is attempted.
What are some techniques that I'm missing here, where can I see big gains? Is it worth it to put the effort into customizing SA? Is there a RBL that is a MUST have. Is there some new realtime spam scanner that's better than SA?
Here's what advice I'm NOT looking for: "Get a barracuda", "just use gmail", "upgrade to the newest version of Debian".

If you had told me 5 years ago I would be getting up at 5:30 to meditate every day and that I would become a children's author to introduce kids to meditation, I would've laughed and asked how many tequilas you had.
As a stressed-out environmental lawyer with a new baby. I had no idea about what was going to come my way in the next year.
Post-natal depression, vestibular migraines (the ones that make you constantly dizzy) -- I had everything I should be happy (the supportive husband, a healthy baby, a lucrative job) and I was miserable.
I tried everything, anti-depressants, Neuro Emotional Technique, essential oils, and all sorts of natural remedies and in the end, it was practicing meditation that brought me back to my center.
It has made me calmer, more patient at home, less irritable, and overall a nicer person (when you stop being angry with yourself, you stop being angry with others).
I learned to understand my emotions, the why of how I feel a certain way in any given moment and it has given me the certainty that regardless of what happens I will be ok.
Because as Thoreau said, things don't change, we are the ones who change.
I saw so many benefits in myself that I knew I had to teach this to my son. So I wrote him a story, just like his other bedtime stories but this one happens to talk about a magic door inside his head, a journey inwards and manifestation.
I believe all children should be taught meditation from a young age and not have some sort of trauma or crisis for them to start.

Je suis du genre obsessionnel tous les quinzes jours sur un truc différent, carpe diem à donf', je ne m'inquiète jamais du passé ni du futur, je ne m'ennuie jamais et c'est vraiment chouette
Sauf que ça cause des problèmes sur le temps long, je ne pense pas aux factures, on me coupe le téléphone six fois par an (au moins), je ne m'occupe d'aucun papier, je ne me fais jamais rien rembourser, je ne me déclare jamais au chômage
J'ai un peu merdé quand j'étais ado parce que j'ai trouvé un métier (la cuisine) qui me permettait ça, je peux trouver du travail n'importe où en une demi-journée, en cas de vrai dérapage je peux même trouver une place logée-nourrie-blanchie, je sais que je ne mourrais jamais de faim ou de froid à moins de le vouloir (jamais été le cas)
Sauf qu'à trente ans passés, j'essaye de trouver de la stabilité parce que quand je serai vieux ce rythme ne sera plus tenable, et vu que j'ai toujours trouvé un moyen de survivre "à l'arrache", je n'ai jamais appris à penser plus loin que deux ou trois mois
J'essaye de changer de métier parce que je suis trop facilement pris dans les impératifs de l'immédiat et qu'il me faut un secteur structurellement plus "long", j'aime le bâtiment pour ça, rien ne se fait en moins de deux heures, obligé d'être plus détendu
J'ai essayé d'aller voir un psychiatre il y a quelques années précisément pour : " Trouver un moyen de ne pas oublier ce qui est important pour moi"
Après trois rdv manqués que j'ai payés dans le vent, j'ai vu que ce ne serait pas ce type qui m'aiderait à me souvenir qu'il y a des trucs auquels il faut que je pense

I've noticed an uptick in shitty T-shirt spammers hitting the sub and posting an image with some stolen art in an attempt to get people to buy their crap wares. I'm sure it's annoying some of you as much as it does me, because they get repeatedly reported before I even have a chance to spot them much of the time.
I'd like to try to curb it. Since they're done with throw-away accounts and don't generally have easily identified strings in the title, targeted automod rules (at least that I've thought up) won't get the job done.
Since this is a music sub, most all of the legitimate posts are video/audio links. Blocking common image hosts I see them using seems a fairly low-impact way to cut out most of it. I'm pretty big on transparency and folks having a say, so I'm putting this action to a vote.

Anyone else have store policies that help curb against resellers? We always ask for half of the total purchase on a credit or debit card for all high value items and usually they only have gift cards so they leave immediately.

I've been really interested in making my own malware and educating myself on cyber security. From my research, i saw that ruby and python are popular languages for malware. How does this work? they are both interpreted languages so doesn't the defender need to have the interpreter installed? Majority of Linux Operating Systems have ruby and python installed so i guess it's not really an issue for devices outside of desktop. The other choice is C/C++ because it's compiled?

After rewatching episodes of DS9, one of the things that was never discussed was the level of skill and patience that the Founders have for infiltration.
We see in multiple instances that a Founder takes place of a person for a long period of time. Martok and Bashir are two great examples. Both Founders went on for weeks impersonating their targets, without raising any suspicion. It’s obvious that a Changeling can change their form to appear to be anyone, but how do they get every mannerism and personality trait from their target?
There is no evidence of telepathic abilities, but there is evidence of gas.
In the DS9 episode “Chimera”, Odo meets another Founder. Two new Changeling skills are revealed. 1) Changleings can live in a vacuum. 2) Changleings can mimic atmospheric gasses.
The reason that the Founders had such great intelligence is that their best infiltrators existed in gas form. Throughout the slow reveal of the Dominion, it seems they are one step ahead of everyone else. There is no mention ever of a formal intelligence agency and no evidence that a Starfleet officer was a double agent. Founders have no use of technology, as The Link is their natural form.
When Bashir was replaced by a Founder, there was no evidence whatsoever. Miles hung out with him for weeks and never suspected anything. Fake Bashir did his job (as a brilliant doctor!), knew all station protocol, new anecdotes of previous conversations, and all the tiny nuances that make a person unique. The only way for a Founder to perfect all this is for them to observe for weeks, maybe even months before replacing their target. The best place to hide in the wide open is as a gas.
No matter where you went, even if you went through a transporter, the Founder would be able to follow. There is no security system that could stop them. They could mimic any gas and just float along.

Absorbing.
And then one night, you are replaced by a perfect replica who has learned intimated details of your life.

Pros -
- Won't get spammed in high traffic areas by bots or they'll have to use accounts with more training time.
- Scammers will look even worse because now they're just spam trading you and you can't even see what they're saying :D
Cons -
- Some new players will feel alienated(but chances are you weren't going to talk to them anyway)

I deactivated the spam filter for some individual Users with the following command
Set-MailboxJunkEmailConfiguration -Identity $Account -Enabled $false
But still i see all the emails going to the Junk folder, despite having it deactivated and only the anti spam policy (Inbound), i only changed the option "Prepend the subject line with text"
Why is this happening?
I remember reading about an ancient technique for representing ownership in some financial instruments (old stocks, or bonds, or maybe it was property) where you break an item in half. The government kept one piece in storage, and you could bring your half back there when you needed to prove ownership and show that the break matched perfectly.
It was an old anti forgery technique and used either wood or clay tablets or something. I think the term for it is also the origin of some modern financial/ownership term.

Has anybody bothered to find an analysis of how effective Apache Spamassassin is compared to Google's gmail spam filter system for blocking spam? I have had it with the spam coming into my gmail inbox lately, but if I move to my own private email system and use spamassassin I wonder if I will be in a worst situation than with gmail.
