--Kurt Brecht/D.R.I., βTear It Down,β Crossover, 1987
This is a punk list too, so letβs cut to the chase. Crossover thrash (previously: thrash, metalcore) was a genre born in the mid 1980s in the midst of both the hardcore and metal movements of underground music. Itβs important to understand the context and timeline of why this movement occurred, who it involved, and why it came into existence.
#Early History: Heavy Metal and Hardcore Punk
In the early-mid 80s, hardcore punk was still largely seen as the true, βhardβ genre that had teeth. Several musicians in both scenes have commented as much--Black Flag and Bad Brains were king, Metallica and Slayer were runners-up. Many of us in contemporary times associate βmetalβ with some of its more grotesque, intense, and offensive aesthetics, in 1982 the darkest and scariest band was still just Venom, while hardcore punk was getting their shows shut down by cops and getting in fights with the audience. Metal bands had their edge (to say nothing that Venom, W.A.S.P., and Mercyful Fate werenβt included on the PMRCβs Filthy Fifteen) but the real hard and dark violent edge was still associated with hardcore punk. Even when Kill βEm All and Show No Mercy dropped, they still had a while to go before they were understood as the instant classics they are today.
Heavy metal in the public consciousness for people in-the-know were bands like Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, and Twisted Sister as much as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Contrast that to Black Flag, Government Issue, Bad Brains, and Minor Threat? Itβs no wonder that people thought that punk had more teeth. That wasnβt to say there wasnβt any level of crossover, so to speak--hereβs Tom Araya of Slayer making a cameo in fellow LA compatriots Suicidal Tendenciesβ famous video for βInstitutionalized.β More on that in a minute.
As such, this came with a sort of cultural divide. Old movies, radio shows, and zines from the period began to refer to separate scenes as βlonghairsβ and βshorthairs,β being what we now call metalheads and punks today (although both those terms were still in use today). And they did not get along.
Humorously, tracing both movements b

But hey, I finally did it. My lengthiest, most pretentious, most self-important music review ever. This is Youthanasia AND Cryptic Writings.
As I said in my CTE review, 90s Megadeth is strangely revered, in stark contrast to the 90s output of Metallica and Slayer. But while CTE is universally loved, there's a weird divide for the next two albums. Both of these have a large fanbase, and both are still considered good. The strange part of this is the people who really like Youthanasia, REALLY LIKE Youthanasia. On the Megadeth subreddit its popularity arguably rivals CTE. The people who really like Cryptic Writings are the same, to a slightly less degree (For a reason I'll get to later). And yet, they tend to only say the other album is "decent". I myself fall into that. I adore Cryptic Writings, I hold it as one of my all time favorites. And Youth? Eh, it was alright. I had a few issues that kept it lower. But then again, I rarely go back to Youth. The last time I went back and really put focus on listening to it was in 2004. And that experience had a whole other set of issues.
So, in 2021, it's important for me to set that history aside and discuss both of these albums as critically as possible. How do they both, in different ways, follow from Countdown to Extinction? How do they stack up as albums on their own? More importantly, when keeping my mind cleared of the mediocrity that plagued other bands in the 90s, just taking Megadeth into consideration, can I really say either of these albums are "real Megadeth albums"?
Let's find out in without a doubt the longest album review I've ever written. This is the gladiator match of Youthanasia vs Cryptic Writings.
Youthanasia
In terms of instrumentals, Youthanasia drifts to more the "rhythm" side of CTE's rhythm-melody balance. There's lots of chunky grooves that wouldn't feel out of place on an Alice in Chains album. Nick Menza keeps himself more restrained than ever before here, going for slower paces. Ellefson gives perhaps his best basslines, really digging the sings into catchy rhythms that

Albums/EPs that were game-changers, unique and once-in-a-lifetime or just a stellar, above-average contribution to the genre if not entirely original - some of which dabble in the cross-over or experimental, avant-garde styles.
This subreddit could be a great opportunity to transfer that list for others to attain the knowledge if you should be so inclined to take a gander.
So if you enthusiasts of rocking, crushing, oft times beautiful Metal wish to delve deeper into the goodies, then feel free to acquaint yourselves with the illustrious creations herein and check them out on YouTube. Also there will be some very well known bands and their golden efforts thrown in for that sense of all-round completion.
P.S. I won't categorize the albums/EPs into specified genre segments as that will be longer than it will already take to complete it. I will order this exactly as I wrote it many moons ago (with some new additions). So expect one genre, then another the next album/EP down, or couple of albums/EPs down in some random ways. And of course don't expect everything to float your boat. Part 2 will be next in line.
Enjoy the amalgamation and be sure to save this post if you wish for future reference and completionist purposes!

October 31st, 1985, Soviet Union. ΠΡΠΈΡ / Aria release their debut album ΠΠ°Π½ΠΈΡ Π²Π΅Π»ΠΈΡΠΈΡ / Mania velichia, thus marking the birth of Russian heavy metal. This record was so well executed and so different from everything else that was being performed in the Soviet rock scene at the time that Aria saw immediate success. The group was about to be catapulted to fame and glory, leaving the door open for other talented groups to soon follow suit.
#Introduction: Rock Music in the Soviet Union
Hello and welcome to my primer about Russian metal, from the legendary groups that started it all to todayβs torchbearers that keep the flame alive. Although, as explained in the introductory paragraph, Russian heavy metal was born with Aria's Mania velichia, there are over two decades of context prior to 1985 that must be briefly explored in order to get a fuller picture of the scene in general and how it was influenced.
As Beatlemania was sweeping the West in 1964, its ripples were felt in the East as well. A product of Western society, Beatlesβ music was quickly outlawed in the Soviet Union as it was considered a threat to the Soviet way of life. Possession of their albums (as well as other Western musical works) could result in grave consequences for the offender, such as being ostracized from society; one day youβre quietly listening to A Hard Day's Night, the next all your friends give you the cold shoulder, as theyβve been advised to not interact with you.
Of course, try as hard as they might, the Soviet government was unable to completely suppress the dissemination of Western music within the Soviet borders. The black market thrived selling illegal music, with especially enterprising individuals coming up with ingenious ways of distributing it, such as ΠΌΡΠ·ΡΠΊΠ° Π½Π° ΡΡΠ±ΡΠ°Ρ (Russian for βmusic on the bonesβ), 7-inch improvised recordings made from X-ray films. The music itself was obtained either through smuggling or through Western radio broadcasts.
And so, the Soviet people were able to, and very much did listen to the Beatles. The influence this group had on the genesis of the Soviet rock scene cannot be overstated, since many Soviet rock groups began their journey covering Beatles songs.
These groups, however, had little hope of ever achieving commercial success. In 1964, the state-owned recor

Go post NSFW jokes somewhere else. If I can't tell my kids this joke, then it is not a DAD JOKE.
If you feel it's appropriate to share NSFW jokes with your kids, that's on you. But a real, true dad joke should work for anyone's kid.
Mods... If you exist... Please, stop this madness. Rule #6 should simply not allow NSFW or (wtf) NSFL tags. Also, remember that MINORS browse this subreddit too? Why put that in rule #6, then allow NSFW???
Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.
Thank you,
A Dad.

Keep in mind, my son is 4 years old, so everything is an original to him.
I had to work late into the evening yesterday, and he was just going to bed when I got home. I had left home for the office nearly 14 hours prior, had a long day, lots of meetings, traffic, etc.
When I walked through the door, I was exhausted, run down, and starving. My wife hugged me and asked how my day was, and I replied, "Done. It was a good day, but has got me exhausted. I just want to grab a bite and go to bed. I'm hungry."
From my son's bedroom, I hear him shout, "Hi Hungry! Nice to meet you!"
Not only did it make me laugh, but I completely forgot about how hungry and tired I was. I went to his bedroom, and we laughed together about it. It was exactly what I needed.
Edit: Thanks for all the awards, kind strangers! I'll let my son know y'all enjoyed his joke too!
(This explanation intro is a repost from when I first shared these playlist a couple of months ago. I first shared 2017, then 2013, then I managed to clear the whole decade 2009-2019. I found myself a girlfriend in October and started a new job in November. This on top of my busy wrestling training and workout regimens, I hardly had time to finish these. I barely squeezed out DL05 around Thanksgiving. I actually found a good amount of free time when the winter storm crippled Texas, so with a few snow days at my disposal, I managed to knock out DL06 in one day. Thus, I finally managed to finish ALL of them.)
For about a decade, I've had a hobby of making setlist playlists on iTunes. I'd keep track of shows I attended this way. A fun hobby of mine was tackling festivals. I liked doing this for Download Festival, Sonisphere, Soundwave, Warped Tour, Mayhem Festival, even a few odd ones like Aftershock or Rock On The Range.
Important note, I'm American. I've never been outside the states. Closest I've been to leaving was going to the Canadian border at Niagara Falls, the Mexican border at Eagle Pass, TX, even off the continent to Hawaii, but never outside the US. I've always wanted to travel, almost exclusively for going to Download Festival in the UK. That's my concert/festival Mecca, a bucket list item. I've always wanted to go there ever since watching the live stream of 2009. The closest to Download Festival I'd managed to do on my side of the pond was Warped Tour, Mayhem Festival, Self Help Fest and Rock Allegiance, those just had to do for now.
For a long time, I'd try to get these playlists the most complete I possibly could with the resources I had. To this end, I was always such a sucker for live albums, even bootleg audio, to get my playlists as close to the feeling of an actual live show as I could. Sometimes I'd use only the bands I had on my desktop, then piece in the others with setlist.fm or YouTube or whatever. Being such an overt completionist and perfectionist, I started downloading artists to round out and juice up these playlists on my iTunes. Often I'd download or even buy whole discographies just to make setlist playlists. Needless to say, this wreaked havoc on my storage space and eventually my whole desktop. I think I'm on my 4th laptop this decade.
Sometime in 2017, I made the jump to Spotify. I probably did this when I wanted to listen to Warped Tour setlist playlists from that year in the weeks leading up to
