Also, I believe there is a type of bacteria that dies when it comes in contact with oxygen. I also believe that this same bacteria is responsible for causing pneumonia. Can't remember what kind of bacteria this is...anyone know?

The following was posted in the Discord by our friendly neighborhood physician DR.G (on reddit, posts under u/onepennycheaper) around a week ago. I thought it was a great post, and there's lots of interest in the sub around Cortexyme, so with his permission here it is reposted on the subreddit.

CRTX - Bull thesis is that there's an intracellular anaerobic infection named P gingivalis that you get from gingivitis which causes a chronic brain infection, releases a toxin called gingipain, which causes inflammation, amyloid and tau plaques, and thus neurodegeneration causing Alzheimer's. This is literally the claim.

My Counterpoints:

P GINGIVALIS DOES NOT CAUSE CHRONIC, LATENT BRAIN INFECTION.

1. Translocation of bacteria from oral cavity to brain can happen. There are no known examples of bacterial pathogens in the brain that do not cause symptoms. Is it plausible? Maybe, but highly unlikely. The theory that patients with gingivitis commonly have small numbers of this bacterial pathogen hitch a ride inside immune cells heading to the brain, and become entrenched, but are so small in number they don't cause acute symptoms requires a lot of imagination. 2. Asymptomatic/latent infections do not fit with any of the reported cases of CNS infections of P gingivitis, which are exquisitely rare and acutely symptomatic. Examples: https://casereports.bmj.com/content/2017/bcr-2016-218845.short, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3841642/

3. Why do patients on chemo, immunosuppressives, AIDS, etc not manifest symptomatic CNS P gingivalis infection from their latent P gingivalis being unleashed? We completely destroy different aspects of people's immune systems quite frequently, yet this issue magically never comes up. See above case reports, my clinical experience, common fucking sense, etc.

4. The only reported evidence of P gingivalis infection found in people's brains are data from Cortexyme, e.g. CSO Stephen Domini. I've found no third-party confirmation. On a slide where the company tries to make the case they are validated by independent labs, even they can only find tangential pieces of data supported by third parties.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I've been in and out of this hobby since I was a tween. (multiple decades) Each tank I've kept I've screwed up here and there, nothing too terrible. I've always chalked it up to a learning experience. With all that experience, I was ready for a big boi tank with all the bells and whistles I could afford. this time around was going to be different. And it was. This tank fought me every step of the way for the last 4 years and it won. Everything is dead.

With the never ending tinkering with the homemade sump and pump return, struggling with "easy" plants I've never had trouble with, my first bacterial infection (my guess is anaerobic bacteria) this year, to the final blow of my water pump going bad and spewing toxins into my tank... It never came anywhere near what I imagined and I've just never really had time to enjoy the tank. The most upsetting thing is I sunk more time, money, and effort into this tank than any of my others. I really tried this time and I really failed. Sucks.

I was just getting ready for a big re-scape, but I don't know. Guess I'll do a full water change and try to keep the plants alive for the time being. I'm not even sure how to make it habitable again. I learned a ton, I guess. Just wish it wasn't at my fishes expense.

I'm not sure what I'm hoping to get out of this, but I feel like you people are the only ones who would understand. So thanks for reading.
