A list of puns related to "Al Walid I"
I know their rebel enemies regard them as one and the same as IS, but why are they having an own name and what is their own official position?
This is my personal attempt of a translation of an elegy by Khalid Ibn Al-Walid after hearing of the death of his son. It is translated line by line from the original, recited here in Arabic. I recommend reading the translation as it is recited.
Over my features a flood of tears had ran its course
And in my inflamed heart embers had been set alight
And shattered was my heart the day I was told he died
And as my tears poured over, my world was full of strife
And my misery has injured me, and my sorrows compounded
And by God do not ask me of my sorrowed heart
Whensoever night may come, I will cry for him
And no ease nor joy will come from the light of day
He was like the moon, exceeding in brilliance
Eclipsed he was, his light smothered
And he was generous in giving, not caring for scarcity
And if combat drew long, he did not know fear
Imprisoned by the steed of the traitorous villains, he was
And they had rid him of his sword and spear
For O my misery, had I been present
By a running sword their two sides would have become one
Rotting corpses amidst battle, they would have become
Amidst the valley and the mountain, carrion feed they would have become
By the truth of the one whose Quraysh pilgrimaged to his house
And sent the chosen one, Taha, the aim of destiny
That I slay of them a thousand lords amidst battle
If the beneficent one allows and I last.

"...he [Khalid ibn al-Walid]* will not spare any one of them [apostates]* he can gain mastery over, (but may) burn them with fire, slaughter them by any means, and take women and children captive; nor shall he accept from anyone anything except Islam." The History of al-Tabari, Volume X: The Conquest of Arabia
* I added the square brackets and the text inside of them to make the passage easier to understand
I mean, last time the rebels showed any major weakness (the 2017 Daraa offensive) they launched a big offensive and seized Tasil and several other towns, but during this offensive, they don't seem to be trying anything at all.
Any ideas why they haven't taken the opportunity? Or could it be that they know that the SAA are eventually gonna come for them too, and are just fortifying until then?
Khalid ibn al-Walid is often presented as a infallible general who single handedly led the armies of Islam to victory in over a 100 battles (a number so often emphasised that it has a strong implication of propoganda). With divine support of course.
How reliable are the accounts by historians about him? How justified is the praise he is getting as a strategist? Do we only have Muslim Arab (and later: Muslim Persian) accounts about him? Do we have any non-muslim accounts ?
