A list of puns related to "Aesthete (chiton)"
I'm not sure how to introduce this... Long story short, I was sitting in on a conversation listening to an Elder of an Indigenous people here in the coastal PNW about different kinds of food: harvesting, cooking, eating, etc., which includes lots of shellfish. I can't quite remember the exact process--I think you just boil it for a short time, or maybe eat it raw--but they mentioned eating chiton and smoking tobacco making you 'crazy'. The word 'psychedelic' was then thrown around. I was very curious, so some googling brought up only this site with a citation from a book:
Manhousat who ate raw black chitons and subsequently smoked tobacco would experience a high: feeling light in the head, faint, and speaking in a peculiar manner http://traditionalanimalfoods.org/marine-invertebrates/primitive-molluscs/
book citation: Ellis DW, Swan L: Teachings of The Tides: Uses of Marine Invertebrates By The Manhousat People, vol. 1st edition. Nanaimo, B.C.: Theytus Books Ltd.; 1981.
What do you think this could be?? Has anyone else come across an interaction between non-plant food and psychoactive substances?
edit: my first thought is that it could just be a MAOI thing, like the cheese effect, but I've never heard of that interacting with tobacco like that. Or maybe it's the reverse-- MAOI in tobacco causing something in chiton to become psychoactive?

This is my first time getting to the point of making it but I don't want to bother unless I know what the advantages (and disadvantages) are before I do.

Found this thing while diving in Northern BC, close to shore at a depth of 35-40ft. I've never seen anything like this before.
I anticipated upon visiting this sub a certain elevation of discourse, a certain special grace in the implementation of speech written, a certain - I don't know what - je ne sais quoi.
I find you, instead, somewhat plebeian.
Mayhap I should hie myself thither? Who can say?

I moved to the big plateau in the SW of the map as soon as I could. Where can I get chiton nearby? I've found two scorpions in about 3 hours. The only flying mounts I have are pteranodons so I can't exactly run up to the volcano with ease.
Inspired by the recent Polynesian culture post, I decided to make a proposal to add my people, the Tlingit, to the game! During our height, before European colonization, we Tlingit were renowned fishermen, woodworkers, warriors, and traders. Our canoes were traded as far south as the Aztec Empire and our furs were traded across the Bering Strait to Russians. We fashioned chainmail armor out of Ming Dynasty coins. I would love to know any thoughts you might have!
Tlingit
Era: Medieval
Affinity: Aesthete
Legacy Trait: "People of the Tides": +2 movement for naval units, Disembarking does not cost any extra movement
"Masters of the treacherous Alaskan waters, the Tlingit live a life of fishing, hunting, raiding, and trading at the behest of their clan's matriarch."
Emblematic Quarter: KootΓ©eyaa: +2 Influence, +3 influence per adjacent coastal water or lake tile, +2 food per adjacent coast water or lake tile, -10 stability, exploits food and money from adjacent land and water tiles, must be placed adjacent to coastal water or lake tiles, does not need to be placed adjacent to other districts, counts as a commons quarter
"The mighty KootΓ©eya rise into the sky, marking important figures for each KΜ²wΓ‘an. In turn, the home of their hΓt s'aatΓ serves as the center for their constituent houses and for trade."
Emblematic Unit: X'iGΜ²aakΜ²Γ‘a: 40 combat strength, Melee Unit (replaces Great Swordsman), Guerilla Fighters, Move and Fire, requires 2 bronze, unlocks with Heavy Infantry technology.
"They were one with the sea. Warriors and raiders raised from the age of six to fight. They were adorned with chainmail fashioned from foreign coins and great clubs and swords of obsidian."
This is from the latest beta ( now live ) patch notes. Does anyone know what "Aesthete gains now scale quadratically with Eras." actually means? I know what the words mean in English and I get what they mean by "scale quadratically" but I'm not sure what it's applying to.
Do they mean the amount of fame you get for the stars? The difficulty of getting each star? The "clicky" ability for aesthetic cultures?
Chitons seem like an interesting group of animals, so where do you think they would rank?
Does anyone have a clue why the Zhou are an Aesthete culture?Their trait is bonus stability, and their district is an early science district with great scaling on mountains, which pays for the stability of another district. But districts don't buy you stability, so unless you get good rolls from the RNG that delivers laws and events you'll only get more influence than normal if you manage to lean on the cultural axis that grants influence per emblematic quarter.
In games when I play them, I tend to get maybe 1 Aesthete star, and unless I want to progress super early I have so much science that I can easily spend 10 turns doing no research because, not being a scientific culture, they can only research Ancient tech despite having a district which easily puts out +13 science, or with some luck +28, in a period of the game where you're not generating any district science until the end of the tech tree, on the pacifist branch.
