I'm playing through IX again and noticed an air cab engineer had an unusual name. Looked it up, and it turns out this dialogue is a tribute to a real man named Chester W. Nimitz, a fleet admiral for the united states navy. He actually lost a finger in an accident involving a diesel engine.

On Sept 5th 1942, United States Navy Messman Charles Jackson French successfully swam through the night for 6-8 hours pulling a raft of 15 wounded soldiers with a rope around his waist in shark infested waters. French was the first black swimmer to receive the Navy medal of heroism in 1943.

USS Plunger (SS-2) was one of the earliest submarines of the United States Navy. She was the lead boat of her class and was later renamed A-1 when she was designated an A-type submarine. TIL WWII sailors would drink the 180-proof grain alcohol fuel used in United States Navy torpedo motors. The mixture was denatured with methanol causing sailors to go blind and later switched to Croton oil which caused painful cramps, internal bleeding and a violent emptying of the bowels.
