Today is INVENTORS DAY. Γ‰mile Cohl created what is considered to be the world's first animated cartoon in 1908. His black-and-white short film, Fantasmagorie, is composed of 700 drawings that Cohl illuminated on a glass plate. So, in sense, he invented animation. www.jonciano.com

Disney announces a black actress will play Ariel in the live action Little Mermaid. The thread in /r/movies is entirely about discrimination in film…against gingers and white people overall.

The thread’s got everything:

  • β€œIt’s just not fair because I have red hair and identified with Ariel! Now I’ll have no connection to this one.” (Almost scary how un-self aware this is considering it took til 2009 for there to be a black Disney princess. And that there’s still another redhead Disney princess.)
  • β€œActually, there are too many black actors compared to other minorities, so this casting is discrimination against all races (but still mostly white people).”
  • β€œIf they can recast a white role with a minority, they should recast minority roles with white people to make it fair.”
  • β€œWhy are they casting blacks in my pure European fairy tale???”

[TOMT][MOVIE][1930-1950]Black-and-white film, people in a castle or mansion, all I have are some images

I'm from Ontario; back in the late 1980s with some teenage friends, we liked do to improv comedy and figured out a way to re-dub the audio on whatever was playing on TV, and record it to VHS. I've got a snippet of a movie - no credits, no original sound - and it ended up getting re-copied from tape to tape until now the quality has mostly degraded. I'll I've got are a few images I recovered from the tape; that's it.

It's probably from Great Britain or the U.S., it looks like it could have been made anywhere from 1930 to 1950 (?), it must have had sound originally. No one breaks into dance or song. No WWII imagery that I can see. The action seems to take place inside a castle or mansion. It looks like it might be a light comedy or drama.

https://wantonsoup.net/unknown1.png

The man on the right seems to be the main character. At one point he briefly wears a kilt, so maybe he's Scottish or in Scotland? Not sure if the woman is a love interest.

https://wantonsoup.net/unknown2.png

There appears to be a sullen butler. Also a group of middle-aged and elderly men who walk around in a group and seem to be concerned about something.

[TOMT][MOVIE][pre-1988] Black & White art film, music only, no dialogue, non-linear time. As various parts of a house are shown being built and razed, the house's memories of what people did in that room are shown.

I saw it somewhere between 1985-1988, but don't know when it was filmed. The movie jumps back and forth in time and slowly reveals the history of the people in the house and their various shenenigans.

A young couple sets the ceremonial first brick of the first wall, then walk away smiling, only to have the masons spitefully knock the brick out of the way and re-start the wall. A scene or two later, we see that same wall being demolished.

There's a man with a pointy beard whose profile gets shown in shadow, then later the character is revealed and identified by the same pose and the beard.

Another scene in particular that sticks with me is that of a young girl staring wide-eyed at having discovered her father and his mistress snuggling up together, who then wake up and hastily separate as they straighten their clothing.

Anyone else remember this short art film?

ADDENDUM: There is no dialogue in the entire movie.

[TOMT] [Movie] I would like help finding this film. The film is old and was in black and white. It is about a man who goes to an island. On the island all the people never die. He finds out the Doctor on the island has made a serum. The man escapes the island with the Doctors daughter.

When the man and the daughter reach the shore he turns and finds that the you g beautiful woman has turned into a corpse. Honestly this film reminds me so much of the movie The Island of Dr Moreau but with the living dead. The people on the island do not eat brains or do normal zombie stuff. The living dead act normal but when they stop taking the serum they start to deteriorate rapidly. I have googled and searched for years but can not find the name of this movie. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

[TOMT] [Movie] [watched in the 90s but much older, maybe 1950s] A girl loses the ability to walk but is able to walk with two sticks at the end of the film, possibly black and white.

I was quite young when I watched this so it probably would've been the early 90s. Thinking back on the style of it, I'd put the film circa 1950s. I just saw it the once when it was on TV but something recently has triggered the memory and I'm curious about what it could have been.

The film started with the main character as a young girl and she got sick which resulted in her losing the ability to walk. I remember that at some point she was lifted up onto a table so someone could examine her legs.

She had to have some treatment which was painful for her and later in the film she was a grown woman. She was at some sort of gathering with family and friends and she was able to get up and walk using two sticks. I think there may have been something involving a love interest at this point, which at that age I was totally disinterested in so remember nothing else of the film.

Thinking back, it may have been an illness like polio which affected her ability to walk. It definitely wasn't What Katy Did, which seems to be the main story following a similar plot. I want to say it was set in America, but it could have been British.

I have a buddy who works in the film industry that gave me one reason as to why β€œMetalhead” was filmed in black and white

He basically said that the CGI β€œDog” would look a lot more realistic in black and white as a CGI model than in color. Color makes the rendering that much more arduous and tricky for CGI artists, but with black and white the artists could focus on certain aspects that would be not worth the time given their deadline. It also adds to the drama, etc. but that is what he thought the main reason for the black and white look of the episode was. I thought it was interesting to share at least

Kubrick's original de-colorized illustrated "screenplay" of A Clockwork Orange, published in 1972, featuring 800 black and white stills from the film alongside all of the dialogue

Images from the illustrated screenplay of A Clockwork Orange, published by Kubrick in 1972.

As with most published screenplays, this was not the original script written before the film was shot, but a transcription of the dialogue from the finished film, except that it is here accompanied by 800 black and white stills comprising every shot from the entire colour film, making this a very unusual and singular publication, as no other film screenplay has every been published in this form, either before or since.

In the Preface to the illustrated screenplay, Kubrick writes:

"I have always wondered if there might be a more meaningful way to present a book about a film. To make, as it were, a complete, graphic representation of the film, cut buy cut, with the dialogue printed in the proper place in relation to the cuts, so that within the limits of still-photographs and words, an accurate ( and I hope interesting) record of a film might be available to any one who had a bit more curiosity than just knowing what happened in the last reel. This book represents that attempt." ----Stanley Kubrick May 22nd 1972 .

A new edition of this screenplay was published in 2000, a paperback of 383 pages, by ScreenPress Books.

The shootout scene included someone who jumped on top of a grenade and it exploded around him instead of on him. A man shooting out of window with a pistol and every time it is cut back to him he breaks a different piece of the window. Another man shooting out of a window but except he can't break the window. I know this might be a long shot asking because it seems just so obscure but it's worth a shot.
