... keep reading on reddit β‘The Webster family donated 100 acres of woods in Newton for conservation in perpetuity in 1916. What happened?
https://newtonconservators.org/webster-letter/
TLDR: After Edwin Webster died in 1950, the Commonwealth used eminent domain and otherwise sold almost half of the conservation land for development, against the wishes of the Webster family and the City of Newton. Of that, some was developed, some Newton was able to reprotect with a stronger eminent domain claim in court, and 17 undeveloped acres were eventually purchased by Boston College, very likely for development.
B.C. Vice President Thomas J. Keady has been making several false claims regarding the upcoming Newton City Council vote, likely next month, to protect the 17 undeveloped acres by eminent domain, in articles in the Globe and letters to Newton residents:

TLDR: Only existing CPA funding, which by state law can only be spent on open space, recreation, affordable housing, and historic preservation, would be used. Likely 7%-9% of the total fund per year would be spent on Webster Woods, leaving the rest for other CPA purposes.
