In one of my previous posts, someone said that being a voice actor/actress (seiyuu) in Japan is something similar to being an actor/actress in Hollywood. In other words: a high profile work. Is this true? Just asking, because I honestly had no idea about it.
Do voice actors record at the studio where the anime is made or are there studios specifically for that end? I have always wondered about this , especially for voice actors who are in many different shows at the same time, like how do they manage to do all their work if they had to move from studio to studio each time
I'm a newbie voice actor and until now, I managed to book some small roles in some indie animated series. I'm typically the only one in the studio & most of the time, I don't even get to know who all of the other cast members are (they're often scheduled to come to the studio at a completely different time and on a different day).
I'm sort of jealous on Japanese voice actors because they get to be all in the room together when recording, so the dialogue sounds more natural.
Typically, voice acting in America is a lot more expensive so gathering up all the voice actors at once might be way too costly. Renting a recording studio over here is also more expensive.
But I guess that geography might also play an important role in this difference. Compared to US, Japan is tiny so its a lot easier to bring all of the seiyuus in the studio at once.
Another factor is that in Japan, the VAs normally receiver their scripts way before the session so they have more time to study their character & rehearse in their character 's voice. I normally don't receive the script until I step in the recording studio so I just have to practice cold reading a lot.
I love a lot of the voice acting in this game. So I just wanted to see everyoneโs opinion on whatโs their favorite voice acting.
Voice acting in this game is generally accepted as good, there's no debate about that. But what's the worst example you've seen of it so far?
It can be the line itself being cheesy, the actor/actress being clueless about context, or anything that makes it stand out.
I'll go first. I remember in one of the Dunmer zones, this old lady (the same actress that voices quite a few old elven women in the game in the exact same boring monotone voice) asked for help finding her lost daughter, who went off to find some kwama eggs or something. Turned out the daughter was killed in action.
Upon receiving the news, she just goes "oh no, anyways", and says something along the lines of "I suppose I'll make the omelette anyways now, it will be salted with my pain and peppered with my grief".
Such an unbelievably terrible line (madam you just lost your fucking daughter, quit this cheesy ass poetry), said in a painfully monotonous tone, it stood out for me so extremely that I still remember that one line, even after years of having done it. Line so terrible it gave me mild trauma.
What's your examples?

I ask this because I've been running into these comments a lot lately. To me personally, most English/Japanese-voiced characters both sound the same or as derivatives of another character. The shows that actually sound unique across the board are few, and the general tone is easy to identify as an "anime tone".
But if there's some difference in how certain dubs get their voicing across, I'd love to hear what makes those dubs more tolerable to you. Do you have any specific shows and/or reasons why?
I've recently been in a SWTOR YouTube rabbit-hole watching videos of story choices that I've never made and I recently watcher a video where the Trooper sides with the Empire on Iokath and is confronted by Elara at the end of the story.
The part where she goes:
"This isn't a philosophical argument--you've killed Republic soldiers! My soldiers! All to help the Sith Empire claim a superweapon that will undoubtedly kill thousands more! There's nothing else to say here. Nothing."
has stood out to me for YEARS as my favorite bit of voice acting in the entire game. The way Moira Quirk emotes it and delivers the line is phenomenal to me and it sells Elara so well as a character.
I was wondering what the rest of the community felt were exceptionally good bits of voice acting as well!
I am a 18M college student who is looking to make some money. I have been told I have a good voice, and have done narrations for my school, +2 and my father's workplace. I wanted to know, are there any agencies I can contact that can give a start in voice acting? Or does anyone know someone who may be in need of VAs? I can do work in English, but my Malayalam has a bad Mangalore accent. Also I live in Kochi.

EDIT: I have tried freelance websites like Fiverr and Voice123. The problem is no one is interested to take me on due to lack of experience.
So I just watched an interview where they were speaking with a professional Japanese voice actor and she said she went through a 4 year program dedicated to voice acting. I was like โWhoa! Thatโs awesome!โ So I looked up if there was anything similar in the U.S. and... nothing(?) Are there any programs (outside of traditional BFA/ MFA acting programs) that develop an actor? With a focus on voice acting?
Replaying BioShock and I'm still in awe at this voice acting. Shimerman makes Ryan feel like a real and believable person. His already great dialogue is made even better by the sheer emotion of his voice. Irrational did a stellar job in casting. I don't think I've ever heard better voice acting in a game before or since BioShock.
Honorable mention goes to Sander Cohen's voice actor because he killed it too.
As opposed to America, voice acting seems to be a big deal in Japan. I hear that itโs quite competitive and that thereโs even schools that specialize in voice acting.
But what else should we know about voice acting in Japan? Is it a cutthroat business? Have voice actors damaged their voices beyond prepare because of how much of themselves they give to a role? Do you have personal stories about getting into the business? Feel free to share!
We have perfected the ability to imitate and change our voices accordingly (pitch, tone, speech patterns etc.) to gives horror, or maybe some serious chills to xenos. Friend and foe alike
