A list of puns related to "Theophilus"
Exactly what the title is. He owes me money for a feature. Heβs doing this to others and I want to spread the word.

Yesterday random discovery...
What I was taught is that Theophilus is a stand in name, where the author of Luke-Acts is addressing the wealthy patron who commissioned their work. Is it possible that it's an ancient pun addressing the reader? As in, because you are reading the book you are a lover of god?
On Diverse Art is a treatise wrote by German churchman Theophilus, around the 1120's. The treatise is separate in three books: the book of the glass worker, of the metal worker and of the paint worker.
In the latter, he describes covering wood panels (doors, altar pieces, shields) in a oil paint, before covering the paint in "a gluten called varnish". Th recipe goes as follows:
You heat up some linseed oil in a pot, and add some "finely ground resin, fornis, which is called Glassa in Roman", and let it heat until the resin is melted and mixed with the oil.
Now, Theophilus is vague about the resin he mentions, other than for the names it is given. The edition of the treatise I have has a footnote saying that sandarach, but then says that such resin cannot melt in linseed oil.
My question is, what sort of resin did he use?
Since I wish to recreate his recipe, the answer must satisfy the following criterias:
The resin must be more or less easily available to Western Europeans and/or Northern Germans during the 11th/12th centuries
The resin must be able to melt and mix with heated linseed oil
Thank you in advance for those taking time to answer
