The Mirror Pool Puns

Greetings!

I have a zpool that consists of two mirror vdevs (x4 2TB drives altogether) and I plan on replacing two of those drives with two 4TB. I was wondering if there's any specific order or if it matters which drives get replaced first. Should I replace drive 1 and drive 2 or drive 2 and drive 4 etc? And what is the correct process? Shut down, unplug and replace, boot and resilver or does it start automatically?

I've done a bit of research but when it comes to possibly loosing my data (I do have a backup) I want to be 100% sure.

Looking for some advise on best attempts to recover a ZFS pool that was holding a few VMs the development teams were using for testing a few things and I guess some development might be lost if this can not be recovered. The pool was originally commissioned to be just for ephemeral VMs for testing- nothing permanent.

Drives are WD 6TB Golds , WD6002FRYZ, that are about 3 years old but have 1.7yrs left on their warranty. The zpool was set up as a RAID10 (2x3x6TB) for the usual reasons (speed & redundancy).

The system was rebooted after a clean shutdown and RAM upgrade and now only 2 of the 6 drives have came back up. Yes the system has gone through a several pass memtest and stress test, and the memory is fine and was ruled not part of the problem. These are on a FreeNAS 9.10.2U6 system with a Highpoint RR750 HBA. Its sill no 9.10 due to a large (100TB) encrypted pool and a Chelsio T520 not playing well with upgrades to 11 without driver updates and key importing.

I have not figured out yet which of the two are in the striped mirror sets (basically if I can get 1 of each pair up then at least I can get the data off).

Any help will be appreciated. This is hour 5 into this and devel is getting antsy.

I was able to get the 6 drives to import and are now doing a scrub to make sure there's no data loss. Thank you for all the comments and suggestions about what to do- I think I'm really certain on either failing HBA port or bad harness, either of which make me want to swap them out to a pair of LSI 9201-16i's with news hardnesses so I can still connect all 30 slots up.

I read this book in the late 90s/early 2000s. It was a paperback chapter book for maybe 8-13 year olds and had an image of a child standing or kneeling beside and looking into a black pool/mirror. The art was in the style of old Hardy Boys or Boxcar Children books. I picked it out during a weeding sale at a library so it was an old book, maybe written during the 60s or 70s?

The most detail I can offer about the plot is that a modern child found a black obsidian rock that reflected like a pool of water and when they looked into it they were suddenly transported to another place. I'm pretty sure Native Americans were part of the plot.

Current setup

• Pool1, 4x4TB mirror, 31% full, documents/photos, backup exist
• Pool2, 4x8TB mirror, 48% full, plex media, no backup but content re-downlodable just takes a looooong time.

My 8-bay NAS case has no spare slots or SAS ports. I would like to buy an extra 2x 8TB and rebuild my 4x8TB mirror to 6x8TB raidz2 & downsize my 4x4TB to 2x4TB.

Rebuilt Plan 1

• Physically remove 2 drives from Pool1 mirror putting it in degraded state.
• Detach 2 drives from Pool2 mirror putting it in degraded state
• Buy 2x new 8TB drives, use it with the 2x detached drives to make a degraded 6x8TB Pool3
• Copy Pool2 data to Pool3
• Destroy Pool2 & Resilver Pool3
• Destroy Pool1, rebuild to 2x4TB & restore data from backup
• End result two pools, 2x4TB mirror & 6x8TB raidz2

Rebuilt Plan 2

• Physically remove 2 drives from Pool1 & use a external usb drives
• Copy Pool2 data to external usb drives
• Destroy Pool1 & remove 2 physical 4TB drives
• Install 2x new 8TB drive, rebuild Pool2 from 4x8TB to 6x8TB
• Rebuild Pool1 to 2x4TB restoring from backup.
• End result two pools, 2x4TB mirror & 6x8TB raidz2

Would my crazy/complicated plan of shuffling drives around work to rebuild? Without building a 2nd server or buying new hardware any better method of rebuilding my pools?

If I have 2 mirrored paired in a single pool, as in: "zpool create tank mirror disk1 disk2 mirror disk3 disk4" do the 2 pairs form a RAID 0-like configuration? I don't want to have the RAID0 between the pairs, so if disk1 and 2 both fail I still have half my data. By the way, I will be using openZFS on MacOS. Thanks! edit: realised that obviously if 1 and 2 both fail I only have 50%, not all the data, if there is no RAID0 between the pairs

I am currently trying to set up a simple mirrored 2-disk zpool for archiving my files, and I've followed this tutorial to initialize the pool. I know I can also set up datasets and ZVOLs, but am not sure how to proceed.

Overall, I would like my ZFS system to be simple with minimal overhead. My main requirement is really just encryption over the entire pool. I would ideally have a pool that acts the same way as a single encrypted ext4 drive, of course with the added benefit of 2-disk redundancy and self-healing.

A few questions I have are:

• Do I need to setup a dataset after creating the pool? Is there already a default "root" dataset? What is the benefit of multiple datasets?
• I understand ZVOLs create raw block devices over the pool (still don't fully understand block devices). Is a ZVOL an alternative to a dataset, or would it exist in conjunction with datasets? If I'm aiming to keep things simple, should I even be considering ZVOLs?
• Between datasets and ZVOLs, which is more analogous to a hard drive partition?

I know these are some fairly noob questions, but I was having trouble piecing together the information on my own. Thanks!

Are there any issues with adding different sized vdevs to a pool?

What is the correct procedure to upgrade the 4TB disks with larger disks later on?

I know the community managers for Bungie came out and said it's essentially Trials weapons or Ritual weapons. They arent going to not put new weapons in their "new" pvp pinnacle mode. So Rituals are dead right?

Remember In Destiny 1 when all modes, vendors, etc. got new loot pool updates? those were the days and we all didnt even realize how good we had it.

My heart broke a bit. I think a lot of post-partum women can relate. It’s not just weight gain. Your body goes through something akin to a savage beating. You pee when you laugh. You pee when you jog. Hell, sometimes you pee when you walk. Your abdomen caves in on itself. Your body SHAPE changes, sometimes permanently. Your nipples get itchy and sore and cracked. Your hair falls out. You feel like a milk supply machine. The hormones. I’m sure ladies can pipe in with their own unique experiences. Sometimes you feel unrecognizable to who you were before.

I can’t believe I’m even writing this. I can’t believe I feel so good about myself after such a long time dealing with insecurities. I had a surgery last week removing a large mole on my upper lip that has been getting me down on myself for years. The wound is healing amazingly, I got my stitches removed yesterday.

I was just standing in front of the mirror looking at my new face and just burst into tears and smiling at myself because I’ve never really enjoyed that way that I looked and it’s held me back so much in my life. Forcing myself to face a certain way in pictures, avoiding certain lighting, feeling like people are staring at it / me, taking selfies hiding it, offering to always be the one behind the camera in the group picture, looking at it in the mirror and hating myself.

I can’t stop bawling and I’m just so excited to like myself from now on.
