Hello, I've been thinking about these tales for a lot of years, and even wrote some of them, but now I'm starting from scratch, got my structure for a bunch of books, got my characters and world, all set to go. This is the first chapter, after the Prologue, and focuses on one of the main characters. Tell me what you think.
Once the dust had settled, he had nowhere to run. Every time he looked back, it was only to look at his footsteps, which quickly faded into the sunlight's slow exhale. His face, he covered from the sand grains, with some small cloth he collected from long ago. Victims, he remembered. There was a time when he could remember their faces, before death finally took them away, but the passage of the seasons has a way of softening a man's heart, and of making him forget the tragedies of yesterday. It also dumbs the senses enough, such that the grains sticking to the skin become a far greater hassle, than the eyes losing life. By his side, forever loyal, were his sidearms and sword, dirty from the labor. To create peace, he knows, someone must stand between evil and good, and settle, perhaps save one from the other, perhaps die in the attempt. It's the attempt, fool, that's all that matters, he tells himself, but every step in the scorching sand buries those inner thoughts into a thicker tomb, from which there will be no escape, if he ever should forget to bury them out. Surely, any god worth praying to would soften those tired old wrinkles from his face, so that they may see further; would youngen the wiry muscles in his calves and arms, so that they may strike the enemy harder, or, one can only hope, smite the enemy himself. Only at night…
Alas...He runs. At least, that's what it feels.
**Once he had been a family man, in a small village to the south of the old train stations, placed between the Land of the Angels, and the Argos Territories. Back then they were not aware of these other creatures, and of their ambitions, so they lived happily, or happy enough. There was food to last the week. At their worst, they merely starved for a couple of days. There was water to go around. The village only harbored a couple of drunks and some small families. But then Xarxos came. His sight felt like a dream, broad and heavy, wings flowing like the water on the eyes of the Place Upstairs, like the purple rain of the grandfather's times.
