A list of puns related to "Taiwan Relations Act"
Isnt the Taiwan relations act a massive solvency deficit for the taiwan aff? (at least the taiwan war advantage)
Im asking because of this: http://focustaiwan.tw/news/aipl/201905310010.aspx 'Taiwan passes bill for referendum on cross-strait agreements'. Any peace treaty with China would have to be:
'passed by at least 75 percent of the lawmakers present at a meeting consisting of at least 75 percent of the members of the legislative body and would then need to be approved via referendum with the support of at least half of the electorate.'
Which is exactly the same burden needed to amend the Constitution (Article 12 of the additional articles): https://english.president.gov.tw/Page/95
'Amendment of the Constitution shall be initiated upon the proposal of one-fourth of the total members of the Legislative Yuan, passed by at least three-fourths of the members present at a meeting attended by at least three-fourths of the total members of the Legislative Yuan, and sanctioned by electors in the free area of the Republic of China at a referendum held upon expiration of a six-month period of public announcement of the proposal, wherein the number of valid votes in favor exceeds one-half of the total number of electors.'
However, if to amend the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area all any future KMT administration needs is a simple majority, all they have to do is to re amend the ε°η£ε°εθ倧ιΈε°εδΊΊζ°ιδΏζ’δΎ back and sing a treaty without needing a referendum.
Am I forgetting something?
I am also aware that by doing so the DPP, NPP and any non integrationist force in Taiwan would successfully accuse the KMT of selling out Taiwan to China, of being authoritarian for a matter of such importance and imho a vote loser for the KMT. Im not sure how much.
I'd like to read your reviews differentiating the purely legal matter (majorities and quorum) from the political one. I still don't believe any KMT administration would push a peace treaty with China after what happened in Hong Kong with the extradition law, the demonstrations against red media in Taiwan, the current animosity of the Trump administration towards China and the help America is offering Taiwan to minimize vote subversion from China.
