Can we all agree that Spencer’s family is trash? I’m rewatching the show years after it ended. Currently I’m on season 2 episode 1 and can’t stand how they treat Spencer compared to Melissa. Why does Melissa make everything seem like a competition? Also their parents are just ew. They always treat Spencer like she’s a burden and treat Melissa like she’s some shiny gold star!
Listening to you describe your relationship with your parents is very similar to how my relationship is with my mom and stepdad. They constantly overstep boundaries, they stonewall, and they don’t care to meet me halfway in order to rebuild the relationship. They expect me to suppress my own feelings in favor of theirs.
They’re also very Trump-y, and more recently, very QAnon-y. I have a 12 month old and they have refused to get vaccinated to see her safely. When I told them we would not be spending time with them anymore because of the safety of our child, my mom called me and yelled at me for manipulating her.
All of this is just to say that you’re not alone and you’ve got people in your corner. I hope you’re doing better after the holidays and thanks for all the work you (and Kevin!) put into the podcast.
Literally i don’t understand Spencer’s family. In season 1 they made it seem like she was crazy and they were ALWAYS taking Melissa’s side and then they say “oh we aren’t choosing sides” yes tf you are. i’m happy that spencer found toby because her parents annoyed me alot. And Melissa… oo girl. She gives me pick me vibes. Like spencer should’ve shown her the video so she can get smacked cause i’ll do it if she doesn’t want to tf
I know her family didn’t believe her and just thought she needed therapy in season 1 when she was “blaming Ian” and stuff but like even if she was lying I can’t believe her parents would just dismiss her like that and let Ian stay there. Like obviously Ian is causing her distress so why is he allowed to stay there. They could just leave they are adults and have other places to live besides the barn. Spencer’s family is just always so frustrating it’s so annoying.

I just saw a post that reminded me of this, but I always hated how the liars made Spencer so uncomfy about her parents having money… like she couldn’t do anything about that?? They used it against her so many times and it always enraged me
