I just got my Master's in Medical Laboratory Sciences and did my capstone project on PMDD here's what my literature review found

Abstract: PMDD is a mood disorder that affects approximately 3% of menstruating women in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. The symptoms of PMDD have significant overlap with the symptoms of hypocalcemia. A literature review shows that women with PMDD have significantly lower urine calcium values in the luteal phase as well as lower plasma levels of 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D and IGF-1. These lower calciotropic hormone values lead to impaired bone calcium and access and lower intestinal absorption. Testing these values would allow clinicians to monitor these micronutrient deficiencies and the effectiveness of supplementation in their patients.

I think we all know what PMDD is so I'm going to skip some of the introduction.

Introduction:

There is significant symptom overlap between PMDD and hypocalcemia which begs the question of whether PMDD causes hypocalcemia or if the symptoms of PMDD are exacerbated by an underlying calcium deficiency. Monitoring calcium levels in women with PMDD and addressing low levels could provide a simple, low-cost intervention that may improve the symptomology of women with PMDD.

PMDD: Depression (sadness, lethargy, social isolation, decreased motivation), Anxiety (insomnia, paresthesia), Fatigue, Irritability, Labile mood, Food cravings, Edema, Bloating, Abdominal cramps, Headache, Generalized aches and pain

Hypocalcemia: Depression, Anxiety, Paresthesia, Fatigue, Impaired memory, Impaired intellectual capacity, Personality disturbances, Neuromuscular irritability, Muscle cramps, Tetany

The average adult human body contains around 1000 grams of calcium, 99% of which is in the form of hydroxyapatite and is located in the skeleton. One percent of calcium is found in the extracellular fluid. In blood 50% of this calcium is ionized and measurable while 40% is protein bound and 10% is complexed with citrate and phosphate. Diet is our only source of calcium, and the only loss of calcium is excretion in the urine. Vitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) are the most important up-regulators. While calcitonin is the most important down-regulator. Vitamin D is a transcription factor that increases intestinal absorption. PTH increases renal tubule reabsorption and hydroxylation of 25(OH) vitamin D to the active form 1,25 (OH)2 Vitamin D as well as increasing calcium levels by stimulating osteoclast activity and bone breakdown. 12

The menstrual cycle is divided into two primary phases; the follicular phase which starts on the first da

Doctor of medical laboratory science

Hi guys. I’ve been a MLS for about 2 years now and I’d been considering MPH or MBA in healthcare as suitable masters degree programs up until I saw the MLSD option. I only know of two schools that offer that in the USA as it is fairly new, so I’d like to know if anyone knows about the program / went through this route. Does having this qualification mean you’d be paid more? Can you only work in specific labs since you’d be required to go through residency after graduation and consult with MDs and pharmDs? Do you know of any lab that has MLSDs and do they have different job requirements overall from MLSs? Do you also need to include the (Dr.)title in your name like the doctors of pharmacy and optometry usually do?

All comments are welcome

Scientific facilities and laboratories need better protection from science denying nutjobs

I worked at many labs and institutions as part pf my studying and quite a few times some crazy people just burst in during classes and research sessions and go into tirades about what we are doing. These people can easily hop over the shitty fences and weak security of so many labs and this is dangerous for many reasons.Firstly these facilities contain untold amount of valuable data that can be easily destroyed in an attack. Secondly these nutjobs can group up and launch attacks since social media exists and having more extensive security or defence might help better. And lastly people are going to be in danger in these places as researchers are still people and not mindless drones serving the "NWO overlords"(yes someone actually yelled that at us),there is a very real human cost to the irrational actions done by these misinformed foolish, individuals. Thats just my opinion because too many times have I seen my friends wrongly harassed or put into danger because of foolish people with stupid ideas.

Medical Laboratory Science

Hello everyone, so I am going to graduate from McMaster University next year and I am searching for different schools that offer training to become a Medical Laboratory Technologist. There are many out there such as Michener, St. Lawrence, etc. but the MLS program offered at Ontario Tech is one that I know little about. One thing I do know is that it is a four-year program offering a bachelor's degree, which I am okay with. So, there are some questions regarding this program that I wanted to ask MLS students in order to be more informed:

  1. How’s the overall community in this program? Would you say many students in this program are friendly and cooperative?

  2. How intensive is it and what is usually the hardest year to complete?

  3. How are the professors?

  4. Would you recommend other students to apply to this program or to go somewhere else?

Thank you!

My father was W. Reid Thompson, a senior research associate in the laboratory for planetary sciences at Cornell in the 80s and 90s. Would love to hear any stories about him from former students / colleagues!

Hi there!

My father Reid Thompson passed away in 1996 when I was 2 years old. I am now 28, and would really love to learn more about the person he was before it's too late! If anyone knew him and feels like sharing, it would mean a lot to me. Here's his obit for anyone interested. http://adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1997BAAS...29.1492C

There is another one that was written by Carl Sagan and published in Icarus, I purchased it at some point, but I think it's on an external hard drive.

Thank you so much!

Lexy

EDIT: With the advice and assistance of NoAstronomer4834, I emailed the astronomy department, and have been contacted by several professors who were close with my father and would like to meet up with me. I am thrilled! Thank you all so much for your guidance and support!
