GEDmatch results- half Southern Italian (with one great grandparent Sicilian), half Northwestern and Eastern European. I think it's reflecting a lot of my likely (ancient) Greek ancestry via Greek colonies in southern Italy with the about 20% Eastern Mediterranean? Not sure what else it means!

CMV: Greece is an Eastern European and a Balkan country before it is Southern or Mediterranean.
Greece is in the Mediterranean and in Southern Europe geographically as well as in the Balkans which is considered Southeastern Europe but its historic and cultural affinities at least within the last 1000 years are primarily with their Eastern European neighbors.
Despite being commonly associated with and grouped with Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, it really belongs in Eastern Europe, specifically the Balkans.
Greece is excluded because the West idolizes ancient Greeks.
-
Greece is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox like the majority of Eastern Europe.
-
Greek food, music, and culture is most similar to that of other Balkan nations, such as Bulgaria, Albania, Serbia, and North Macedonia, and is a mixture of Byzantine, Ottoman Turkish, Slavic, and Mediterranean influences.
-
Despite not speaking a Slavic language, there is a significant Slavic ancestral component to most Greeks, which means that to some extent they share similarities to nations we would not question as being Eastern European. Additionally, there are non-Slavic countries in Eastern Europe such as Romania, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia etc.
-
Being part of the Soviet Union is neither a necessary condition for being Eastern European nor was the entire Soviet Union in Eastern Europe. We consider Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria to be in Eastern Europe but they were never in the Soviet Union.
-
The Greek alphabet is the basis of Cyrillic and Eastern Europe is along with Greece the religious heir of the Byzantine Empire.
What exactly does Greece share with Spain, Portugal, Egypt, Palestine, Libya, Syria to justify grouping it with them before Eastern Europe? Italy is the exception due to historical ties. But thatβs one country.

No one talks about this but southern european countries (espacially Italy) are really bad for autistic people
I'm not talking only about myself but in general about autistic people, I live in Italy where the 90% of the people that I met were very rude and bad (especially in the newer generations), people talk very loud there, if an autistic person (I don't do this) cover his/her ears people will start to look at you in a bad way and maybe even making fun of you, If you don't take sarcasm here people that are serious are very rare, people only do black humor EVERYTIME even when they shouldn't do that. People are gonna look bad at you if you don't like soccer or/and you don't listen to trap music. Since italian people are known for being one of the most extrovert people you can already understand how being autistic there it's very bad. Do you hate when people just don't respect the rules?, then you will provably suffer in Italy. Wish I could go to a more mature country, bad people are everywhere but nice people there are very rare

Why did it take so long for Europeans to round the southern tip of Africa?
Christopher Columbus famously traversed the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. Europeans had not discovered the Western Hemisphere because they did not have technology to travel such far distances, given the amount of supplies they could hold for the trip. (Or so I think, maybe I'm wrong on that one.) Europeans also did not know that the American continents even existed. Europeans also did round pass the southern tip of Africa until Dias did it in 1488, only four years before the journey of Columbus. How hard would it have been to simply follow the African coast south? Couldn't Europeans have done this centuries earlier? Europeans obviously knew about the African continent, and couldn't they have resupplied while making stops on the west coast of Africa? Why did it take so long for them to finally get around the southern tip? Did crossing the Sahara present a challenge because there would have been no place to resupply along the coast at those latitudes?

Bit controversial topic but i'm eastern european and after reading many forums ( 4chan, reddit, apricity forums ) i have impression that eastern europeans are europeans of inferior stock in many people eyes and southern europeans for many are just arabs reskinned. So do you think that we are white.

Why does the architecture of southern European towns and cities, for e.g, look more aesthetically pleasing than similar sized towns and cities in Britain?
Putting aside the likes of Edinburgh, London and a handful of others. Why do many big cities and towns in Europe, but specifically southern Europe, have more pleasing and uplifting architecture?
It's quite frustrating actually, because as somebody who likes art and beautiful looking buildings, it is a shame there is little pride in how many of our town and cities look from an aesthetic standpoint. If it was my choice, I'd like to add more colour to the buildings on top of changing the architecture. I guess the weather doesn't help, but still, they could be made to look so much better.

Southern vs Northern European lesbian culture
I've been thinking about this a bunch lately. It seems like in Spain/Italy/France, so like Latin/Romance countries, there is much less gay clubs and special LGBT culture, it's more blended together and gay people are less obvious and easy to find. Whereas in Germany/UK/Nordics there's more LGBT meetups, bars, clubs, and organizations, if you see what I'm saying.
Is this just me, or has anyone else experienced this? I was shocked to see that in London, for example, there is a "gay neighbourhood!" Such a thing would not exist in Madrid lmao

Was there a significant spice trade in Southern Africa prior to European colonialism?
I asked a similar question regarding the existence of a spice trade between foreigners and the Khoekhoe and San peoples but it seemed a little too specific to get an answer.
I know there was trade between people from the Far East and Arabia and those who ruled in Mapungubwe but I specifically want to know whether or not spice was a part of that.
As an aside I would also be interested in what was traded for it.
TIA!

Do Anatolians, Levantines, and North Africans have Southern European ancestry hidden in the West Asian and North African category?
I have noticed that many Greeks and Southern Italians have varying amounts of West Asian ancestry in their 23andMe results. Furthermore, it is said that the Spanish and Portuguese category hides a small amount of North African ancestry. Considering the fact that many peoples sailed throughout the Mediterranean Sea throughout history, I doubt the flow of genetic ancestry was exclusively from West Asia and North Africa to Southern Europe and never vice versa.
