Company is growing up - But we're struggling to define clear requirements for our internal software projects and constantly changing project scope. How does YOUR company minimize and manage around these challenges?

We're growing up. We're investing more in technology. We build many components of the software that runs out business. (Not all, just the strategic portions), and we have some portions of our company where we are selling SaaS solutions. In other words, a huge portion of our business relies on software engineering. Most of which, we outsource to India.

The challenge we're having as we grow is likely not unique. Stakeholders will define what they want, our product owners (glorified ticket writers) take those requirements and build the roadmap and the tickets for our India teams, and the teams in India build what's in the tickets. There's a lot of pressure on that product-ownership team to "get it right".

All of that is working. Here's what's not...

Our stakeholders (at the executive level) aren't smart enough to think through the implications of their own requests. For example, "I want a product that does X, Y, and Z". Great. We build the roadmap and the tickets for that. Stakeholder signs off.. away we go.

3 weeks in, the stakeholder says, "Whoa.. wait a minute.. here are 6 new things I didn't think about when we first talked about this". (Or, the developers come back and say "Hey.. here are 6 things WE didn't think about when we started this..). In either case, the scope changes. We re-group. We re-write tickets. We agree on the changes. And we move forward.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat the above 5 times until the project is 9 months overdue, and costs 3x what was originally projected.

I'd be very interested to hear how others structure their teams and their design workflows around the above challenges. I know this isn't unique to our company. I know scope creep is real. I know engineering requirements can change as we do better and more discovery, etc. etc.. but what are YOU doing to minimize these things, and keep it manageable?

3d Printer Software requirements

Hi everyone! I hope you all are well. I need some assistance. I am going to purchase a makerbot 3d printer since multiple friends have told me that it's a good brand. I have a laptop that is about 5 years old, and was wondering if anyone knows if that would have the ability to run the software required to 3d print. Also I know very little about software (I have a decent amount of experience in Autodesk Fusion 360 but that's it) so if anyone could recommend or list some software programs that would be much appreciated. I thank you in advance for your advice and help

Secure notes software with specific requirements

Hi i have a lot on my mind and I need to write it down somewhere.. First I thought about using paper but it's hard to keep them safe from other people...

My requirements is this.

  1. Rich text editor
  2. Web version ( I don't want to install anything on my phone or computer)
  3. Tags
  4. Internal note links.
  5. End to end encrypted.

I tried these apps but they are not satisfying my requirements.

  1. Evernote - it lacks end to end encryption.

  2. Standard notes - markdown editor but that can be fixed by paying for premium but it still doesn't have internal links.

  3. Joplin - markdown editor, No web version, the notes stored on the device is NOT encrypted.

  4. obsidian - markdown, no web version,

EU Blue Card salary requirements for software engineer?

I have a job offer for €50k, but I read on this website (https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/eu-blue-card/germany/) that I would have to get approval from the German Federal Employment Agency? I am just confused that since the job is in engineering, does it mean that the salary requirement is lower, or do I still need to get the approval?

"To get an EU Blue Card for Germany, you must be offered a salary of at least €56,800/year (€4,733/month). If you work in a profession that is considered β€œin shortage”, the minimum salary may be lowered to €44,304/year (€3,692/month).

If your salary is lower than €56,800/year, then you must ask for approval from the German Federal Employment Agency to be granted a Blue Card."

Looking for a workflow management software for a small team that meets these requirements

My partner is an accountant that runs a small firm and they're hitting a scale that needs better workflow management than just lists and the QuickBooks integrated to-do features. A lot of this is probably pretty niche, and I have a software background so I can help with Zapier integrations or any other connective stuff - so hybrid solutions can work here. Some of this can probably be addressed by behaviour and process, but I'd like to see as much of it as possible be automated.

Standard task-management

  • To-do lists
  • Supports assigning tasks to team members
  • CRM features would be nice-to-have to have fewer softwares to keep on top of (upload data "to" a client file)
  • Alternatively some sort of Gmail plugin (or browser plugin that pulls from Gmail)

Task Duration Estimates, Real Time Spent

Estimate how long a task will take (in hours, typically) when creating it, then when marking as done input real time (would be nice-to-have if it integrated with Quicktime/TSheets or another employee time tracking software). Use this data for future instances of recurring tasks or similar tasks, and to help with capacity planning.

It would be nice to be able to prime this with old timing data as well.

Priority and Deadlines

Some tasks have firm deadlines, some have soft deadlines, some are just kind of ongoing. Some deadlines shift based on client communication. Some tasks also have varying start conditions (dates, client submitting data, etc.). All of these factors should be taken into consideration and tasks prioritized by the system (or suggested priorities generated at least, which can be overridden). A major pain point has been "I can't figure out what's the most important thing to do right now so I end up spinning my wheels."

Capacity Tracking/Planning

Based on some % efficiency and hours available to each staff member (based on schedule, vacation, etc.), be able to plan when certain things will get done. This should be used in generating the to-do list for today, providing client estimates, and surfacing warnings if something is getting too close to the deadline based on the duration and other priority items.

Additionally, if an item has to be moved, the software should be able to illustrate the impact of that ("Client, if you don't get <file> to me by <date>, then this report will be delayed by <time> as I have set aside time to work on your file this week and will be busy with other stuff later.")

Quilt Design Software & Fabric Requirements

Is there any inexpensive software out there (that will run on a Mac ) that I can use to find out how much fabric my quilt design requires?

Today I'm trying to find the fabric requirements for a relatively simple design. I used Prequilt to layout the blocks and and joined to get the ability to determine the fabric requirements. BUT the software calcs fab reqs if the blocks are HST or rectangles only. (Here is the block I'm turning into a quilt: https://scrapdash.com/corn-off-the-cob-quilt-block/ ). I am sorely frustrated now, because I find the interface to PreQuilt to be pretty basic so it takes time to layout a top. And more importantly, I don't know how much fabric I need.

Help!

What do you do when a software doesn't cover your design requirements?

Hi, I'm a structural/geotechnical engineer.
What do you guys do when a software doesn't cover your design requirements (ex. inputs, codes, factors...)

For example, what happened to me was, I was using a software that is kind of like Tekla Tedds. Then I realized that this software does not let me change this factor I wanted to for this specific project. To be precise, it didn't allow me to type the factor but instead, it changed by what national Annex I chose. So what I did was, I exported the result with the default factor to MS word, changed the value of the factor manually on MS word, and recalculated all the calculations by hand that were affected. Since I often work for Asian projects using Eurocode or the US code, these kind of things happen to me occasionally.

So not limited to similar problems, have you ever found any missing features in your civil engineering related softwares that was required in your projects and how did you deal with it? Buy a different software license that covers it? Create a spreadsheet from the scratch? Contact the support? Any idea would help since I'm getting tired of these situation.

Need help finding an inventory management software suite that meets my requirements

Hey, y'all! I'm just now "going pro" with my small business. I've rented a warehouse and I'm starting to get enough work to make this all make sense, but I've run into a big problem: I have no standardized way of consolidating inventory. So, that leads to my question, which is what Inventory management system would be best for me? Here's what I need it all to do (I refurbish and sell PCs, and this system would almost exclusively be for PCs I've bought to repair/resell):

  1. Have separate categories with different specifiers. For example, if I put a laptop into the system, the specs/criteria I need to mark are going to be different than a desktop. For each product, I need to be able to specify specs, condition, included accessories, etc.
  2. Have each product be unique. Two laptops I get in may be identical on paper, but their physical conditions may vary. Barcode generation/ printing features would be ideal as well.
  3. Have the ability to upload media files (pictures) and "attach" them to each product.
  4. Have a standardized form (or at least the ability to make one) for entering all this that a relatively inexperienced user can understand.
  5. Have the ability to output to eBay and/or other marketplaces. If it outputs something I can copy/paste when I query, that works too.

Do any of y'all know of any software suites that are capable of doing this? Worst case scenario, I'll build my own database, but I would really appreciate not doing that since it will take me ages.

CARLA software Graphics card requirement

Hello all, So i have decided to start with CARLA for autonomous driving and testing algorithms.

In the official CARLA site, they suggest atleast 6gb graphics card. But mine is NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1650 4gb. My laptop s Lenovo ideapad gaming 3i, intel 10750H processor, 16 gb ram. Will it be a big factor in the process time of my simulations? Is it really a problem?

Anybody who has worked already on this, pls share ur opinion on this...

Switching from Windows to Linux - Requirements: Full disk encryption, gaming, software dev, browsing

I am looking to switch from Windows to Linux, mainly due to security concerns. I absolutely want full and secure disk encryption of all files (LUKS, if that's secure?), including the boot drive. My usage will consist of:

  • Gaming (Factorio, Minecraft and Steam games)
  • Software development (C/C++/Java)
  • Average web browsing

How much do you know about GNU/Linux? About average, I have some years of experience with the administration of Ubuntu 20.04 server but will need to learn a lot

Do you prefer the Windows or MacOS design? Windows

Is your hardware fairly old or obscure, or is it modern / common? Somewhat modern, but slowly fading. i5 6600k OC'd to 4.2 GHz, NVIDIA GTX 980, 16 GB G.Skill DDR-2132, 2x256 GB Samsung SSD (one as boot drive), 2x3 TB Western Digital HDD (all drives to be encrypted)

What will it be used for? Gaming, software development, browsing

Do you have any special requirements? Stability? I don't want things to randomly break, but also somewhat regular updates, there should be a balance somewhere?

Distro Chooser Results 1. Linux Mint, 2. openSuse, 3. Zorin OS

I have tried Manjaro in a VM and like it overall. But I am worried about it "breaking", because according to some reports from users Manjaro update apparently have a habit of breaking stuff.

Thank you for taking the time!
