Idioms: An idiom is an expression that conveys something different from its literal meaning, and cannot be guessed from the meanings of its individual words. "Between a rock and a hard place" is an idiom that means βin a difficult or bad position with no good way of getting out of it.β What makes an idiom different from a figure of speech is that its non-literal meaning is already familiar to speakers of the language.
Metaphors: A metaphor is a word or phrase typically used to describe one thing but unexpectedly used to describe something different. Metaphors make language interesting and help create imagery. They also make us aware of connections that we may not have thought of before. "He was drowning in paperwork" is a metaphor that makes a connection between having to deal with a lot of paperwork and drowning in water.
Similes: A simile is an expression that uses the words like or as to describe something by comparing it with something else. A simile is like a metaphor except that a simile uses the words like or as to signal that a comparison is being made. βSheβs as fierce as a tigerβ is a simile, but βShe's a tiger when she's angryβ is a metaphor.

My son is learning about similes and metaphors and have slowly introduced him to Emβs music. Would love to share your examples of Emβs best or favorite with him!
I've always found it fascinating how Christians consider themselves God's bride (simile described in both in doctrine & scripture). I can't help but think about the marriage proposal though, as in "Honey, I love you very much; will you marry me? Before you answer please consider: if you say 'NO' I will torture you for all eternity. "
Could you say this deity truly loves her? Could you then say their deity would make a good, prospective husband?
I feel like I can definitely tell a good one when I read it. But when I'm trying to come up with one either I just can't or they're just super tacky.
For anyone who doesn't know (or needs reminding), a simile is a figure of speech that involves comparing two different things so as to make a description more vivid (e.g. 'as brave as a lion' or 'crazy like a fox'); and a metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable (e.g. 'it's raining cats and dogs' or 'Bob is a couch potato')
So put on your thinking caps and post 4 or 5 songs containing similes or metaphors (or both) in the title, lyrics or band name. Once again, don't forget to set your flair, leave us a comment, especially if your song choice isn't obvious by the title, and upvote generously.
Vatthupama Sutta: The Simile of the Cloth
"Monks, suppose a cloth were stained and dirty, and a dyer dipped it in some dye or other, whether blue or yellow or red or pink, it would take the dye badly and be impure in color. And why is that? Because the cloth was not clean. So too, monks, when the mind is defiled, an unhappy destination [in a future existence] may be expected.

Because the cloth was clean. So too, monks, when the mind is undefiled, a happy destination [in a future existence] may be expected.
"Knowing, monks, covetousness and unrighteous greed to be a defilement of the mind, the monk abandons them."
"Knowing...
...to be a defilement of the mind, he abandons it."
"When in the monk who thus knows that covetousness and unrighteous greed is a defilement of the mind, this covetousness and unrighteous greed has been abandoned."
"When he has given up, renounced, let go, abandoned and relinquished [the defilements] in part, he knows: 'I am endowed with unwavering confidence in the Buddha... in the Dhamma... in the Sangha; and he gains enthusiasm for the goal, gains enthusiasm for the Dhamma, gains gladness connected with the Dhamma. When he is gladdened, joy is born in him; being joyous in mind, his body becomes tranquil; his body being tranquil, he feels happiness; and the mind of him who is happy becomes concentrated.

Like when Mulaney says a 13 year old babysitting a 10 year old is like paying a horse to watch your dog.
Anyone struggle with this? Any tips on how to approach writing like this?

Why
Edit: In addition to the answer stated here, I also found r/RoomPorn and r/DormRooms that kind of fit the vibe as well.

Recently I read this sentence in a Bill James book and thought it was an excellent metaphor:
"The difficulty with this approach is that it in essence requires you step on every land mine in the process of mapping the minefield."
I've never heard that saying before but I thought it was very clever, and using Google it doesn't seem to be a particularly common saying, though probably not original to James.
My favorite simile in general is "like rearranging deskchairs on the Titanic," but that's in common use, not from a book. I plan on using that Bill James one a lot now. Any of you have similes/metaphors you use that you picked up from books?
EDIT: Deckchairs, not deskchairs. It was a typo, I swear.
Then she ripped it in half and said, βNever mind, itβs tearable.β
I feel like Iβve succeeded as a dad.
Short story. I was in a band in my early twenties. We used to travel all over the state to do gigs, and since my parents had a van, I would often borrow it to drive us to and fro. My mother was a militant reformed smoker, and had an anti-smoking bumper sticker on the back of the van that said βKissing a smoker is like licking an ashtrayβ.
One afternoon, as we were packing up to leave for a gig, our guitarist, Kevin (who was a smoker), noticed the bumper sticker for the first time.
βThat is so stupid! He exclaimed.
βWhat do you mean?β I responded, βIts kind of obvious, right?β
βIt doesnβt make any sense!β He said
βDoesnβt make sense? Why not?β I asked, puzzled,
βLook, that makes absolutely no sense at all.β He explained, as if I were utterly clueless. βThatβs just like saying βIf you like golf, stick a putter up your assβ!β
When someone is not doing A, but also not doing B, it might've been along the lines of "not going down either stream" or "not slipping into either of the boxes" but I'm not sure. If you know any simile (or metaphor, again, not sure what this counts as sorry) that means the same thing feel free to mention it! Thanks!
Title is the big question. The same thing apply to metaphors.
I'm doing my second draft. I want to cut out the fluff, at least the bigger culprits. How many metaphors and similes are too many? When and when not to use them? I think I'm doing a fairly good job at keeping them in check, but you never know.
He said. βSorry. That was a long winded story.β
Why.
