A list of puns related to "Shintō"
Well, the title says it pretty much; can anyone suggest me some sources that analyze these traditions from the perspective of academic philosophy? I'd be particularly interested in anything that looks at how the idea of kami measures up to panpsychism and substrate independence, if such sources exist. But anything helps, really.
Thanks in advance!
> The Japanese Shirasaki Hachimangu was founded by Minamoto no Yoriyoshi,a head of the Minamoto clan. It was common for noble clans to enshrine Hachiman Okami for military prowess and also connection to Imperial line, and Tenjin- sama as a scholarly kami for learning (nobles were the few people who could study, read, and write) so it is likely why here Many shrines in Japan founded by nobles have an auxiliary shrine for Tenjin-sama for this reason too > Yes! It was for that same reason, many noblemen and shoguns would be in same-sex relationships, and because Hachiman Okami and Tenjin-sama were the kami they would pray to most often, I think the association naturally came to be.
Regardless of your opinion on politics, you can’t deny historical fact.
I've been raised Christian, I'm considering converting. any tips?
Recently I came across this elusive "shrine" titled Shiyakujin-no-hokora [四厄神の祠] aka the Sacred Cedar Shrine i(or Sugi Shrine [杉神社] as they call it in Japanese) in Wisconsin (USA) where the "congregation" dubbed their religious movement as "Minzoku Neo Shintō" instead of the original Japanese Minzoku-shintō [民俗神道] (or "Folk Shintō"), enshrine Baba Yaga as one of the shrine's Saijin [祭神] with other pantheons and festivities of Slavic influence (such as Kupalo and Domovik/Domovika), and other "unorthodox" (to put it lightly) practice; depicting an unlikely syncretism between Shintō and Slavic Polytheism aside from the Shintō-Celtic Syncretism that I encountered prior. (Links for further information will be added at the end)
So, since I love researching about Japanese Folklore, I've decided to investigate this matter a little further. By this, asked the congregation few questions regarding their religious practice via their Facebook page's Messenger:
What made Baba Yaga one of the Saijin of your shrine? Is it because of the shrine founder's Slavic cultural background?
Why do you consider Yakujin [厄神] a "spirit of misfortune"? Because in Japan, Yakujin (unlike Yakubyōgami [疫病神]) are deities who repel misfortune. Such as Yakujin-myō'ō [厄神明王] or Mondo-yakujin-myō'ō [門戸厄神] of Mondo-yakujin-tōkōji (Temple) in Nishinomiya City [西宮市], Hyōgo Prefecture.
Why did you dub your movement as "Minzoku Neo Shintō" rather than the original Minzoku-shintō?
Is there a reason why the "Shiyakujin" only mitigate their effects on eastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin?
Is anyone in your congregation fluent in Japanese?
Why is Kyōjin [凶神] (or "Kyō-no-kami" as you call it) one of the "spirits of misfortune"? In Japan, Kyōjin are celestial deities in charge of certain direction seen in Onmyōdō [陰陽道] and aren't necessarily related with misfortune. Such as Ten-ichijin [天一神] who travels between Heaven and Earth to maintain the harmony of North, East, South, and West.

I'm currently waiting for their reply hoping to obtain a detailed insight to this new form of Shintō.
Soulsborne lore theorist:
>“The ape is the embodiment of sarugami (lit. “monkey god”), a heavenly intermediary, while the centipede is the embodiment of the ōmukade, the nessenger of Bishamon (of the Seven Lucky Gods). The juxtaposition of the two symbolizes the syncresis of the Japanese religious tradition in general and the decay induced by ignoring the Buddhist concept of impermanence (無常, mujō) in particular.”
Miyazaki:
>“A zombie gorilla? Not creepy enough. Make it headless. Now stick a centipede inside.”
Hi redditors, I wanted to know which of the 2 sites (http://katori-shinto-ryu.org/ or https://www.katorishintoryu.jp/) is the official one. Also, I’m looking to practice this in Argentina, where Mario Lorenzo is the supposed Shidosha. Does anyone know anything about him? Is he legit?
Hi, I’ve made a post before asking for some help about this koryu here in Argentina. I had my doubts about it’s legitimacy. Here is a video of some of their training. That Hasso no Kamae gave me some pretty serious doubts. I want to know your opinion
Hi translators. I have a companion English translation of this book (a compendium of post-1600 swordsmiths) but it appears to have accidentally omitted this particular entry. I can understand specialist sword vocabulary but ordinary grammar / vocab is beyond me. Below is my transcription:
> 肥前国子、初め大和大掾後大和守、作品その姿よく地小杢、刄文中直、この姿のよ
> い点が兼廣並びに一般肥前刀の特徴である。
And I sort-of managed a pseudo-translation:
> Born in Hizen province. Held the title Yamato no Daijō and later Yamato no Kami. Workmanship includes (something about the sugata?), ji of ko-mokume. Blade (???). This is a feature of both Kanehiro and Hizen swords in general.
I'd appreciate it if anyone could give a more accurate translation. Again I know the specialist vocab (e.g. ji, mokume, sugata, etc.), I just can't quite string sentences together.
Thanks!
She reminds me of the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi, and is even wearing a bottu/bindi. She is featured with three children on our local grocery's calender. I am curious.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!
They were cooked in Greece.
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
Don't you know a good pun is its own reword?
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies 😂
It really does, I swear!
Because she wanted to see the task manager.
Heard they've been doing some shady business.
But that’s comparing apples to oranges
but then I remembered it was ground this morning.
Edit: Thank you guys for the awards, they're much nicer than the cardboard sleeve I've been using and reassures me that my jokes aren't stale
Edit 2: I have already been made aware that Men In Black 3 has told a version of this joke before. If the joke is not new to you, please enjoy any of the single origin puns in the comments
They’re on standbi
Hello friends, I'm relatively new to buddhism, and sometimes I wonder about buddhism's relation to other religions.
Mostly of my family is catholic but my mom is part of a african religion (I really don't remember the name) so I was always surrounded by morals and behaviours from both religions and some really sticked into me, like praying and lighting candles for guardian angels.
Is there any wrong in me for maintaining some of that? How does buddhism sees other religions?
Sorry for my bad english everyone! I'm not a native speaker. Hope you doing well!
A play on words.
My daughter, Chewbecca, not so much.
Pilot on me!!
Nothing, he was gladiator.
Or would that be too forward thinking?
Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
