A list of puns related to "Seattle City Council"
>To offset the impact of the revenue decline, Mosqueda focused on cutting the police budget to preserve the councilβs priorities of addressing affordable housing, homelessness and criminal justice reform.
>Durkan criticized Mosquedaβs proposal, blaming recent staffing problems in SPD on the council. She said the proposal failed to prioritize public safety.Β
>
>βCityβs Councilβs previous promise to defund SPD by 50%, their treatment of Chief (Carmen) Best and their previous layoff budget led to an exodus of 325 officers from SPD in the last two years,β Durkan said. βMultiple plans to address hiring and retention proposed by Chief (Adrian) Diaz and I have been repeatedly rejected by a majority of council.β
>
>βAnd just yesterday, another council member proposed blocking my emergency hiring proposal that has already generated a tenfold increase in applications to 911 dispatch positions in Seattle,β she said. βContinued cuts to SPD and underfunding the 911 center are not a plan for true public safety.β
Been thinking about our current mayoral race between current Councilmember Lorena GonzΓ‘lez and former Councilmember Bruce Harrell, the current "predicament" we find ourselves in, and had a bit of a realization when trying to think about who would be best for Mayor of this city. Yes, Seattle is a mess and I think debating that is not really necessary, but it didn't happen overnight. Seattle and our region have been booming for well over a decade when elected leaders had many opportunities to lay groundwork ensuring our city stayed decent. This includes people like candidate Bruce Harrell who was on Council from 2007 to a very-recent 2020, and he was the former Council President prior before GonzΓ‘lez. GonzΓ‘lez was elected in 2016 as this situation was well underway as a city, regional, and national issue, whereas Harrell had been on Council for nearly a decade when GonzΓ‘lez joined. To me, it seems like Harrell, who likes to keeps saying "GonzΓ‘lez has no ideas", should have seen this coming and done more as a civic leader to ensure our Council and region made bold & challenging decisions so we didn't end up where we are today. IMO, our current situation stems from lack of investment and leadership over years and decades, and not simply appearing overnight by decisions made by today's Council. To be clear: I'm also not absolving our current council for not acting quickly and decisively in times of crisis.
Using transit as a metaphor, because it's what I understand best, we voted for projects like Northgate Link in 2008 and it opened a few weeks ago (hooray!). We laid the groundwork for better transit infrastructure and the investment is now starting to pay off. Where was the groundwork of investment in people and public service infrastructure over the last decade when leaders like Harrell should have seen this coming and resources were plentiful?

TL;DR: if ya hate our Council, you're gonna hate voting for mayor of Seattle.
EDIT I'm turning off notifications for this one...
I'm no tech wizard, but all I'm finding online are stories about the city council voting 5-4 against cutting the SPD budget even more, no names attached to those votes. I want to know the names of the four nimrods who voted for defunding. I imagine 2 of the 4 have to be Mosqueda and Sawant, but who are the other two? I want to know so that I can do everything I can to see those people don't get reelected when the time comes.
